How to Cancel Your EBT Card or Close Your SNAP Case

To cancel an EBT card, call your state’s EBT customer service number and report the card lost, stolen, or damaged. Every state runs a toll-free line 24 hours a day, and the automated system disables the card within minutes of your report. Your benefit balance stays on the account and moves to your replacement card automatically. Canceling the card is not the same as closing your SNAP case, and if you want to end your benefits entirely, that goes through your local office instead.

Make the Call to Cancel

The EBT customer service number is printed on the back of your card, and your state also lists it on its benefits website. The line runs around the clock, every day. When you call, an automated system walks you through the cancellation. If you think someone has your card information, change your PIN first, then report the card. The USDA’s Food and Nutrition Service specifically recommends changing your PIN and checking your account for unauthorized charges as soon as you suspect a problem, so that a thief cannot keep making purchases while you are still on hold.1Food and Nutrition Service. Once the automated system accepts the report, the old card is permanently disabled. It will not work at a register or an ATM after that point. The system gives you a confirmation number. Write it down. If unauthorized charges appear later, that number is your proof of the exact date and time the card was deactivated.

Online and App Options

Many states let you manage the card through the free ebtEDGE mobile app, which is available in more than 30 states and territories including California, New York, Florida, Illinois, and Colorado. Some states run their own web portals with the same basic functions. If you would rather not call, or cannot reach the phone line, check whether your state’s benefits site has an EBT management portal.

What to Have Ready

Have your card number, if you still have the card. The 16-digit number on the front is the primary account identifier the automated system asks for first.2eCFR. 7 CFR 274.2 – Providing Benefits to Participants If the card is gone, that number sometimes appears on old grocery receipts or inside your state’s online portal.

Most states will also ask for your Social Security number, date of birth, and the zip code on file with your benefits agency. These are standard identity checks. If you have moved recently and are not sure which address the state has, look at your most recent eligibility notice. It carries your case number and the registered address.

Your Balance Stays With You

Canceling the card does not cancel your benefits. The full balance stays in your EBT account and transfers to the replacement card once you activate it. The card is the key. Deactivating it does not empty the account.

Benefits do not sit there indefinitely, though. Federal rules require states to expunge SNAP benefits from accounts that have been inactive for nine months, and the clock runs on each monthly allotment on its own.2eCFR. 7 CFR 274.2 – Providing Benefits to Participants Once your replacement arrives, use it.

Getting the Replacement Card

Federal regulations require your state agency to make a replacement card available for pickup or drop it in the mail within two business days of your report.3eCFR. 7 CFR 274.6 – Replacement Issuances and Cards to Households With postal delivery on top of that, plan on about a week. Some states offer same-day pickup at a local office, which is worth asking about if you need groceries sooner.

You will set a new PIN before you can use the replacement. Do not reuse the old one, especially if the card was stolen. The old PIN is compromised the moment someone else has your card data.

States may charge a replacement fee, but it cannot exceed the actual cost of producing the card, and in practice it tends to run around $5 or less, deducted from your next benefit deposit.3eCFR. 7 CFR 274.6 – Replacement Issuances and Cards to Households Many states waive it for a first replacement, and federal rules require states to build in good-cause exceptions for situations like theft or domestic violence. If your card was stolen rather than lost, say so on the call.

If Your Benefits Were Already Stolen

Card skimming and cloning have hit EBT cardholders hard, and the rules on reimbursement recently changed. Congress authorized states to reimburse SNAP benefits stolen through skimming, cloning, and similar fraud under the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2023. That authorization expired on December 20, 2024, and the American Relief Act of 2025 did not extend it. SNAP benefits stolen on or after December 21, 2024, are not eligible for replacement using federal funds.

That makes speed the single most important thing. Every hour between a compromise and your report is money that likely cannot be recovered. If you think your benefits were stolen, contact your local SNAP office immediately, check your transaction history, change your PIN, and freeze the card by reporting it lost or stolen.1Food and Nutrition Service. Addressing Stolen SNAP Benefits Ask your caseworker whether your state runs its own reimbursement process independent of the expired federal authority. Some do; it varies.

Canceling the Card Is Not Closing Your Case

If what you actually want is to end your SNAP benefits, canceling the card will not do it. Replacing a compromised card keeps your benefits flowing. Closing your case stops future deposits. You would close the case if you no longer need assistance, are moving to another state and reapplying there, or your circumstances have changed.

Federal rules let you withdraw from SNAP at any time, and your state agency has to document the withdrawal and confirm it with you before processing it.4eCFR. 7 CFR 273.2 – Office Operations and Application Processing Contact your assigned caseworker or submit a signed written request through your local social services office. The agency will send a notice of action confirming the effective date.

Any remaining balance is still yours after the case closes. The card will keep working at authorized retailers until the balance is spent or the benefits expire under the nine-month inactivity rule. Spend it down before the case closes rather than leaving money in a dormant account. You can reapply at any time after a voluntary withdrawal; there is no waiting period or penalty.4eCFR. 7 CFR 273.2 – Office Operations and Application Processing
