How to Cancel Your Costco Credit Card by Phone or Online

To cancel your Costco credit card, call Citibank at the number on the back of the card (or 1-800-950-5114) or send a secure message through your online account at Citi.com. Before you call, redeem or wait for any pending cash-back rewards, because the Costco Anywhere Visa pays out once a year with the February statement and anything not yet issued is forfeited when you close the account.1Citi. Deal With Your Rewards First

This is where people lose the most money. Cash-back rewards on the Costco Anywhere Visa are distributed once a year with your February billing statement, not on a rolling basis.2Costco. When Will I Receive My Costco Cash Rewards From Citi? Close the account in, say, December, and a full year of 2%, 3%, 4%, and 5% rewards disappears.3Citi. Costco Anywhere Card Cash Back Reward If you can wait until after the February statement posts, do.

Once the certificate is in your hands, you can redeem it at any U.S. Costco warehouse for merchandise or straight cash at the member services desk. You don’t need an active Costco membership to redeem the certificate for cash in person.1Citi. Pay Off the Balance and Move Recurring Charges

Citi recommends paying off your balance and letting pending transactions post before closing the account.4Citi. How to Cancel a Credit Card Give recent purchases a few days to show up on your statement, and move any subscriptions or autopay arrangements to another card. A recurring charge that bounces off a closed account can create a headache with the merchant.

Even after you pay the final statement in full, a small charge may appear on a later statement. This is residual or trailing interest, which accrues daily between the date your last statement was generated and the date your payment posted. Because it accumulates after the billing cycle closes, it doesn’t show on the statement you just paid.5HelpWithMyBank.gov. I Closed My Credit Card Account – Can the Bank Continue to Charge Interest and Fees? Call Citi and ask for the full payoff amount instead of just the statement balance to clear it in one shot.

If you want to close the card without paying the balance off, you can still transfer the remaining balance to another credit card. The new issuer pays Citi on your behalf, the same as with an open account.

How to Actually Cancel

Two paths work: a phone call or a secure message through your online account.4Citi. How to Cancel a Credit Card The call is faster and gives you confirmation in real time.

By Phone

Call the number on the back of your card, or Citi card support at 1-800-950-5114. Have the card number ready, plus whatever identity details the representative asks for. Expect to confirm your name, address, and possibly the last four digits of your Social Security number.

Before processing the closure, the representative will likely transfer you to a retention specialist. That’s standard at Citi. The specialist may offer bonus rewards or statement credits tied to spending targets to keep the account open. If you’ve already decided, decline politely and ask them to proceed. Once the closure is confirmed, ask for a confirmation number and write it down. That number is your proof if anything goes wrong later.

Online

Log into Citi.com or the Citi mobile app, go to the account services or support section, and submit a secure message requesting account closure. This works, but it takes longer because you’re waiting on a written reply rather than resolving everything in one conversation.

Your Costco Membership Stays Active

Canceling the credit card does not cancel your Costco warehouse membership. You can close the Visa and keep shopping at Costco as long as you keep paying your membership dues. The reverse does not hold: if you cancel your Costco membership, Citi closes the credit card automatically. The cardmember agreement states that Citi will close the account if you don’t maintain a Costco membership.6Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Costco Anywhere Visa by Citi Cardmember Agreement

An active Costco membership is also required to apply for the card in the first place.7Citi. Costco Anywhere Visa Card by Citi If you cancel both and later want the card back, you’ll be submitting a brand new application with a hard credit inquiry.

You Can’t Downgrade to a Different Citi Card

With most issuers, you can swap your card for a different product from the same bank and keep your account history intact. The Costco Anywhere Visa doesn’t allow that. You can convert another Citi card into the Costco Visa, but you cannot convert the Costco Visa into a different Citi card. If keeping a Citi account open to preserve credit history matters to you, apply for a separate Citi card before canceling this one.

What Closing the Card Does to Your Credit Score

Closing any credit card can lower your score, and this one is no exception. Two factors drive the impact.

The first is your credit utilization ratio, the percentage of your total available credit you’re using. Closing the Costco card removes its limit from your available credit, pushing utilization up even if your spending doesn’t change.8Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Does It Hurt My Credit to Close a Credit Card? If you have $20,000 in total credit and carry $4,000 in balances, your utilization is 20%. Close a card with a $10,000 limit and utilization jumps to 40% overnight. Below 30% is the common guideline.

The second is account age. If the Costco card is one of your older lines, closing it can shorten the average age of your credit history, which scoring models treat as a negative.9TransUnion. How Closing Accounts Can Affect Credit Scores A closed account in good standing stays on your credit report for roughly 10 years before dropping off, so the age effect is delayed but real.

If you have other cards with generous limits and long histories, the hit will likely be modest. If the Costco card is your oldest or highest-limit card, think twice before closing it.

After the Account Is Closed

A few final steps keep stray problems from surfacing later:

  • Cut through the chip and magnetic stripe on the physical card and dispose of the pieces separately. Remove the card from any digital wallet on your phone.
  • Watch for one more statement. Citi may send a final bill showing trailing interest or late-posting charges. Pay it promptly so the account isn’t reported as delinquent.
  • Pull your credit report after 30 to 60 days and confirm the account shows as “closed at consumer’s request” or “closed by consumer” rather than “closed by creditor.” A creditor-initiated closure can signal trouble to future lenders. If the entry is wrong, you have the right to dispute it with the credit reporting agency.10Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. A Summary of Your Rights Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act
  • Keep the confirmation number you got from the call or online request. If a charge appears months later or the closure didn’t process cleanly, that number is the fastest route to a fix.
