To cancel your Clover account, you contact Clover support by phone, through the dashboard, or from the device itself, and ask them to close the account. There is no self-service cancel button. The part that actually determines whether this costs you money happens before that call: reading your processing agreement, exporting your data, and arranging to return any leased hardware. Skip those steps and a routine cancellation can turn into hundreds or thousands of dollars in fees.
Read Your Processing Agreement First
Your Merchant Processing Agreement, not Clover itself, controls what you owe when you leave. Clover is the hardware and software brand; the contract sits with your payment processor, often Fiserv or a bank that resells Clover. Pull that agreement before you do anything else.
Most Clover processing contracts run an initial three-year term with automatic renewal unless you cancel inside a specific window. Leaving before the initial term ends triggers an early termination fee. For smaller merchants, that is typically a flat charge of around $500 per location. For businesses processing more than $5 million a year, the fee can be calculated as 80% of your average monthly processing charges multiplied by the months left on the contract.1Fiserv. Merchant Terms and Conditions With 18 months to go, the math gets ugly quickly.
Even after the initial term ends, you need to give at least 30 days’ written notice before the end of the current renewal period or you roll into another term.1Fiserv. Merchant Terms and Conditions Find your contract, note the term length and the notice window, and mark the calendar. If you can’t locate the agreement, call your processor and request a copy before you start the cancellation.
When You Can Cancel Without a Penalty
There is one mid-contract exit that doesn’t cost you: if your processor raises your fees, or fails to pass through an interchange rate reduction from the card networks, many Fiserv agreements give you 70 calendar days from the effective date of that change to cancel with no early termination charge.1Fiserv. Merchant Terms and Conditions If you recently got a notice about rate increases, check the date and see whether you’re still inside that window.
Export Your Data and Cancel Apps First
Once the account closes, your access to transaction history, customer records, and inventory data may disappear or get limited. Some merchants keep dashboard access after cancellation; others don’t, and some processors charge a monthly fee to keep an inactive account reachable. Get your data out while you still have full access.
From the Clover dashboard, download reports as CSV or XLSX files. For transaction history, open Reports, run a Transaction Search for the date range you want, and select Export. Pull your inventory from the Items tab, and export any customer and employee records you’ve built up. Save monthly processing statements too, since those contain the fee breakdowns you’ll need for tax prep and for checking your final bill. Store everything somewhere independent of Clover: a local drive, cloud storage, or your accounting software.
Before you call to cancel, go into the Clover App Market and cancel any paid third-party app subscriptions individually. These are often separate billing relationships and will keep charging if you don’t shut them off directly.
Submitting the Cancellation
You have to speak to Clover support to close the account. The options are:2Clover. Close or Pause Your Clover Account
- In the dashboard: click the Help icon in the top right corner and choose a support option.
- On a Clover device: tap Help on the home screen of any terminal.
- In the Clover Go app: tap More, then Help.
- By phone: the number is printed on your monthly processing statement.
Have your Merchant ID or Tax Identification Number ready. The agent will need one of them to verify you.2Clover. Close or Pause Your Clover Account Your MID appears on monthly statements and in dashboard account settings.
State plainly that you want to close the account. Expect a retention pitch: lower rates, waived fees, whatever will keep you. If you’ve decided, hold the line. Before you hang up, ask for a reference number or a confirmation email that documents the cancellation request and the official date services will end. Write the number down. If a billing dispute comes up later, that reference is your evidence.
Return Leased Equipment Promptly
If you bought your Clover hardware outright, you own it and don’t owe anyone a return. If you leased it, send the devices back fast. Unreturned leased hardware triggers replacement fees that can be steep, and some leases treat non-return as a continuing obligation that keeps billing you.
Ask your processor for a prepaid shipping label so the equipment goes to the right facility. Record the serial number on each device (sticker on the bottom or back) and photograph it before boxing anything up. Ship terminals, receipt printers, and peripherals together, and keep the tracking number and drop-off receipt. Two to three weeks after shipping, follow up to confirm the equipment was received and logged. Silence is not the same as resolution.
One thing worth knowing even if you own your devices: Clover hardware is locked to the processor that provisioned it. The devices use end-to-end encryption with processor-specific keys, and reprovisioning requires a certified facility. In plain terms, you can’t take a Clover Station or Clover Flex to a new processor and keep using it. If you’re switching providers, budget for new hardware; some competing processors offer equipment credits or loaner programs to help with the cost.
Pausing Instead of Closing
If the reason you’re canceling is seasonal or temporary, Clover will let you pause or hold the account rather than close it.2Clover. Close or Pause Your Clover Account You request a pause through the same support channels.
What a pause actually costs depends on the processor. Some waive processing fees but keep a reduced monthly charge to maintain the account. Others suspend charges entirely. Ask the agent specifically which fees continue during a hold and whether your contract term keeps running or freezes while paused. A hold that still costs $50 a month may not be worth it over a six-month off-season.
Watch Your Statements After You Cancel
The month after cancellation is when billing surprises show up. Clover charges monthly software subscription fees on a per-device basis, typically ranging from about $15 to $85 per device depending on your plan tier. If the software billing cycle doesn’t line up with your cancellation date, expect one more charge. Your processing agreement may also include a monthly minimum that applies even in a near-zero-volume month.
Check your bank and card statements carefully for 30 to 60 days after cancellation. Look for recurring charges from both the payment processor and from Clover itself, since those can be separate billing relationships. Any charge that posts after your confirmed cancellation date should go straight to the billing department as a dispute, with your confirmation number attached.
Tax Documents and 1099-K Reporting
Your payment processor is required to report your card transaction volume to the IRS on Form 1099-K. For payment card transactions, which include credit cards, debit cards, and stored-value cards, there is no minimum threshold: every dollar processed gets reported.3Internal Revenue Service. 2026 Publication 1099 You will receive a 1099-K for the year you closed the account even if you processed only a small amount before canceling.
Before you close, confirm the business name and TIN on file with the processor are correct. A mismatch can trigger IRS backup withholding notices that are a chore to clean up. Processors mail the 1099-K by January 31 of the following year, so keep your mailing address current with them after cancellation, or make sure you can download the form from their portal.
Keep your exported transaction reports and monthly statements for at least three years after you file the related tax return. If the IRS ever asks whether your reported income matches your 1099-K, those files are the first thing you’ll reach for.
