How to Cancel Your Citi AAdvantage Card Without Losing Miles

To cancel a Citi AAdvantage credit card, call the customer service number on the back of the card, ask to close the account, and get a written or recorded confirmation. The call itself is quick. What matters is what you do before and after it, because a careless cancellation can expire your AAdvantage miles, dent your credit score, or leave you paying fees and interest on an account you thought was already closed. Here is how to cancel your Citi AAdvantage card the right way.

Protect Your AAdvantage Miles First

Your miles live in your American Airlines AAdvantage account, not on the Citi card, so closing the card does not immediately erase them. The risk is slower and easier to miss. Under the AAdvantage program terms effective March 2026, miles expire if your account has no qualifying activity for 24 consecutive months.1American Airlines. AAdvantage Terms and Conditions Earning miles on a co-branded Citi card counts as qualifying activity. Once that card is closed, you have to keep the account alive another way: a flight, a partner purchase, a shopping-portal order, buying miles, or a redemption.

The same terms let American Airlines terminate your AAdvantage account outright if you have no qualifying activity, no open co-branded credit card, and no lifetime benefits such as Million Miler status.1American Airlines. AAdvantage Terms and Conditions Log into your AAdvantage account before you call Citi. Write down your balance, and have a plan for the next 24 months. Even a small shopping-portal purchase resets the clock.

Think About Your Credit Before You Close

Closing a card reduces your total available credit, which raises your credit utilization ratio if you carry balances on other cards.2myFICO. Does Closing a Credit Card Boost Your FICO Score A sudden jump in utilization can pull your score down even if nothing else about your finances changed.

Account age matters too. If this Citi card is one of your oldest open accounts, closing it can shorten your credit history, which both FICO and VantageScore weigh.3TransUnion. How Closing Accounts Can Affect Credit Scores If it’s a newer card and you have older lines elsewhere, the hit is smaller. If it’s your anchor account and you’re carrying balances, consider the downgrade route below instead of closing.

Time the Call Around Your Annual Fee

Annual fees on the AAdvantage lineup run from $99 on the Platinum Select to $595 on the Executive World Elite. Citi generally refunds the annual fee if you cancel or downgrade within roughly 37 days after the fee posts to your statement. Pull up your most recent statement, find the date the fee posted, and work backward. Miss that window and you’ll owe the full year’s fee no matter when you close.

Clean Up the Account Before You Call

Move Recurring Charges

Scan the last few statements for subscriptions, insurance premiums, streaming services, and anything else that bills automatically. Update the payment method with each merchant before you cancel. Charges that fail after the account closes can trigger late fees from those companies or interrupt service.

Finish Any Disputes or Pending Refunds

Resolve open disputes and wait for refunds to post while the account is still active. The Fair Credit Billing Act protects you during billing disputes, but using those protections is harder once the account is closed and your online access is gone.4Federal Trade Commission. Fair Credit Billing Act

Zero Out the Balance

Pay the account down, but don’t rely on the statement balance alone. Interest accrues daily, and recently posted transactions may not be reflected. Ask Citi for the current payoff amount. Any remaining balance after closure still has to be paid, and Citi will send a final statement.

Tell Your Authorized Users

Closing the primary account ends authorized users’ card access, and the closure will appear on their credit reports as well. The primary cardholder stays responsible for charges authorized users made before closure.

How to Cancel the Card

By Phone

This is the fastest route. Call the number on the back of your card with your card number, Social Security number, and billing address ready. Ask to close the account. A retention specialist will usually come on the line and offer a fee waiver, bonus miles, or a statement credit to keep you. If you’ve already decided, decline and confirm closure.

Write down a confirmation number. Ask the representative to make sure the account is reported to the credit bureaus as “closed at consumer’s request” rather than “closed by issuer.” The call usually runs 10 to 20 minutes, most of it hold time and retention offers.

Through Your Citi Online Account

Citi says you can also cancel online.5Citi. How to Cancel a Credit Card Log in, open the Secure Message Center or chat, and send a written request with your name, the last four digits of the account, and clear instructions to close it. You get a digital record without mailing anything, and confirmation usually comes within one to two business days.

By Certified Mail

A letter sent certified mail with return receipt creates the strongest paper trail. Include your full name, account number, mailing address, and an explicit instruction to close the account and report it as closed at the consumer’s request. Use the Citi Credit Card Services address on your most recent statement. Allow two weeks or more. The receipt proves exactly when Citi received the request if a fee dispute comes up later.

Federal rules require creditors to honor your closure request and bar them from charging new fees once you’ve asked to close the account, though interest and fees already incurred still apply.6Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. 12 CFR 1026.11 – Treatment of Credit Balances; Account Termination

Consider a Downgrade to the MileUp Card

If the annual fee is the real problem and you still want to earn AAdvantage miles, ask for a product change to the no-fee AAdvantage MileUp card instead of closing. The MileUp earns 2 miles per dollar at grocery stores and on American Airlines purchases, 1 mile per dollar on everything else, and keeps the 25% discount on inflight food and drinks.7American Airlines. American Airlines AAdvantage MileUp Card

A product change usually preserves your credit limit and account history, so you don’t take the utilization or credit-age hit of a closure.8Citi. Does Upgrading a Credit Card Affect Your Credit Score Because MileUp is also a co-branded AAdvantage card, it keeps your miles counting as qualifying activity under the 24-month rule. Call the number on the back of the card and ask for a product change. No new application or hard inquiry is needed.

What to Watch for After Closure

Residual Interest and the Final Statement

Even if you paid the statement balance in full before closing, you may see a small charge on your final statement. That’s residual interest, which accrued daily between your last statement closing date and the day your payment posted. The amount is usually small, but it still has to be paid. An unpaid final balance, however tiny, can produce late fees and a negative credit mark. Eliminating residual interest can take two consecutive statement cycles.

Shred the physical card so the chip and magnetic strip are unreadable, and remove the card from any digital wallets.

Credit Report

Check your credit report 30 to 60 days after cancellation. The account should show as closed by consumer with a zero balance. A closed account in good standing stays on your report for up to 10 years from the closure date.9Experian. How Long Do Closed Accounts Stay on Your Credit Report If the reporting is wrong, dispute it with the credit bureau directly.

If You Change Your Mind

Citi may reopen the account if you reconsider quickly. Odds are best in the first 30 days, when the closure is sometimes treated as a temporary hold. From 30 days to six months, reopening is still possible but gets more scrutiny. After six months, the closure is generally permanent. Call the same customer service line as soon as you decide.
