How to Cancel Your Capital One Credit Card in the UK

To cancel a Capital One credit card in the UK, clear the balance (or accept that you’ll keep paying it down), move any direct debits and recurring payments to another card, then call Capital One on 03444 812 812 or write to the Swindon address asking to close the account. The company cannot charge you for closing and cannot refuse the request.

Before You Make the Call

Pay Down or Check Your Balance

The cleanest closure is a zero balance. Open the app or your latest statement and look for pending transactions, interest that hasn’t posted, or an annual fee due to hit. Charges can land several days after a purchase, so waiting a full billing cycle after your last transaction before you cancel saves awkward phone calls later.

You can still give notice to end the agreement if you can’t clear the balance in one go. Capital One will stop new spending on the card, but the account stays on your credit report while you pay down what’s left, and interest continues to accrue on the unpaid balance.

Move Your Direct Debits and Subscriptions

This is where most people get caught out. Streaming services, insurance renewals, gym memberships, cloud storage, anything that charges automatically needs a new payment method before the card goes. Scroll back twelve months of statements to catch annual subscriptions you’ve forgotten. Switch each one, then give it a billing cycle to confirm the new payment method actually took.

Check for a Credit Balance

If the card shows a negative balance because you’ve overpaid, Capital One owes you that money. Contact them before closure to have it refunded to your bank account. Don’t leave money sitting on a card you’re about to shut.

How to Submit the Cancellation

By Phone

Call Capital One UK on 03444 812 812. Calls to 03 numbers are charged at the same rate as 01 and 02 landline numbers, so they’re usually included in mobile and landline plans. You’ll go through an automated menu before reaching an agent. Have your account number, full name, and date of birth to hand for ID checks.1Financial Conduct Authority. Financial Conduct Authority – Capital One (Europe) Plc

Ask the representative to record the account as “closed at the customer’s request” rather than “closed by the lender.” That wording matters on your credit file. Ask when written confirmation will arrive, check whether any final charges are still pending, and note the date, time, and agent’s name.

By Post

A short letter is enough. State your full name, your account number, and that you want to close the account. Something as simple as “I wish to close my Capital One credit card account” does the job; you don’t need legal phrasing. Send it by recorded delivery so you have proof of receipt. The address Capital One lists for correspondence is:

Capital One (Europe) plc, PO Box 4929, Swindon, SN4 8QF

Postal requests take longer than phone cancellations. Expect at least a couple of weeks before you hear anything back.

Through the App

The Capital One UK app may offer a close account option in the account management settings. Where it’s available, the app walks you through confirmation screens and leaves a digital record of the request. Not every account type can be closed this way, so if you don’t see the option, fall back to the phone or a letter.

After the Account Is Closed

Destroy the Card

Cut through the chip and the magnetic strip. If the card is contactless, cut across the edges too, because the antenna runs around the perimeter. Split the pieces between separate bins.

Get Written Confirmation

Whichever route you used, Capital One should send written confirmation that the account is closed, either by post or email. If nothing arrives within two to three weeks, call back and ask for it. Keep the confirmation with your final statement; together they’re your proof that the agreement ended cleanly with nothing outstanding.

Check Your Credit Report

One to two months after closure, check your file with at least one of the three UK credit reference agencies: Experian, Equifax, or TransUnion. The account should read as “settled” and “closed.” If you see anything else, including a missed payment flag or an “open” status, contact Capital One to get it corrected. A settled, closed account stays on your report for up to six years from the closure date and then drops off on its own.

What Closing the Card Does to Your Credit Score

There’s no single UK credit score; every lender calculates its own figure from the data in your credit report. Two things tend to shift when you close a card.

The first is your credit utilisation ratio, which is the share of your available credit that you’re actually using. Closing a card shrinks your total limit while any other balances stay put, so the ratio rises. Lenders generally prefer to see it below 25%. If £500 of spending sits across £2,000 of total limit, you’re at 25%; close one card and halve the limit to £1,000, and the same £500 jumps you to 50%.

The second is the length of your credit history. A card you’ve held for years and managed well is evidence you’re a reliable borrower. Closing a long-standing account takes that track record out of active consideration, which can count against you on future applications. That matters most when the card you’re closing is one of your oldest accounts.

If you’re closing the card only because you never use it and it carries no annual fee, consider leaving it open with a zero balance. A dormant, paid-off card still helps your utilisation ratio and your history length. If the card charges a fee, or if having it available encourages spending you can’t afford, close it anyway. The score impact is secondary to not paying for a card you don’t want.

Your Right to Cancel, and What to Do If Capital One Stalls

Credit cards count as open-end consumer credit agreements under UK law. Section 98A of the Consumer Credit Act 1974 gives you the right to end the agreement at any time, free of charge, with no more than one month’s notice. The notice doesn’t even have to be in writing unless the creditor requires it, though a written record is worth having.2Legislation.gov.uk. Ending the agreement is a separate matter from repaying what you owe. Giving notice stops new purchases, but any outstanding balance still has to be paid, and the account remains on your credit report until it’s cleared.2Legislation.gov.uk. Consumer Credit Act 1974 – Section 98A Termination Etc of Open-End Consumer Credit Agreements

Capital One cannot refuse your termination notice. If the request is delayed, ignored, or refused, raise a formal complaint through Capital One’s complaints process. The company has eight weeks to issue a final response. If those eight weeks pass without a satisfactory outcome, or you disagree with the final response, you can take the complaint to the Financial Ombudsman Service, which resolves disputes between consumers and financial firms free of charge. Most closure requests go through without any of this being necessary, but knowing the route exists is useful if yours doesn’t.2Legislation.gov.uk.
