To cancel a Banfield Wellness Plan, call or text the wellness plan team at 888-649-2716, email wellnessplanteam@banfield.com, or send a written notice by certified mail to Banfield’s corporate office. The plan is a twelve-month contract, so canceling before your anniversary date almost always triggers a buyout fee. If your renewal is close, declining renewal is cheaper than canceling.
How the Buyout Fee Is Calculated
When you cancel mid-year, Banfield charges you the lower of two figures:
- The full retail cost of services your pet has already received under the plan, minus the monthly payments you’ve made so far.
- The total of the monthly installments remaining in your contract year.
An example makes the math concrete. If your pet received $800 in services at retail prices and you’ve paid $300 in monthly fees, the services-minus-payments figure is $500. If four monthly payments of $50 remain, the remaining-payments figure is $200. You’d owe $200, the lower of the two.
The formula works against you early in the contract year, when services have been used but few payments have been made. It gets more favorable the closer you are to your anniversary. Before you call, pull the retail values from your invoices or request a ledger from your local clinic so you can check Banfield’s number against your own.
Canceling by Phone, Text, or Email
The fastest route is the wellness plan team. Call or text 888-649-2716, or email wellnessplanteam@banfield.com. Billing-specific questions go to a separate line at 866-935-5738.
Have your agreement number ready. It’s on your original signed contract and inside the My Banfield online portal. The representative will walk through the buyout calculation and process the cancellation on the call. If you email, include your full name, your pet’s name, the agreement number, and a clear statement that you’re canceling. Save the confirmation.
An older number, 888-649-2228, still circulates online. The current number on Banfield’s contact page is 888-649-2716.
Canceling by Certified Mail
If you want a paper trail, send a written cancellation request by certified mail with return receipt to:
Banfield Pet Hospital
18101 SE 6th Way
Vancouver, WA 98683
Include your agreement number, contact information, your pet’s name, and an explicit statement that you are canceling the Optimum Wellness Plan. The return receipt gives you proof of the date Banfield received the request, which matters if there’s any later dispute about when cancellation took effect. This route is slower than a phone call but produces the strongest documentation.
Declining Renewal Instead of Canceling
If your anniversary is close, letting the plan expire costs nothing. You finish the year you already committed to, use whatever preventive services remain, and the contract ends on its own with no buyout.
Log into your My Banfield account at least 30 days before your anniversary date, go to your plan management settings, and select the option to decline renewal. Follow up with a call to 888-649-2716 to confirm the non-renewal verbally. Doing both is what keeps Banfield from charging you for another year.
Your anniversary date is the day you originally enrolled. If you can’t find it in your account, the wellness plan team can look it up.
What Happens If You Stop Paying
Canceling the card on file or ignoring the monthly charges does not cancel your contract. Banfield treats missed payments as a delinquent account, works internal collections first, then hands the balance to a third-party agency. Once an outside collector is involved, the debt can appear on your credit report.
The monthly amounts feel small, but an unpaid wellness plan balance sent to collections carries the same credit consequences as any other delinquent debt. If the buyout is more than you can pay at once, call the wellness plan team about payment options rather than going silent.
Disputing the Buyout Amount
If the quoted buyout looks wrong, pull your signed agreement from the online portal and compare its cancellation terms against the charge. Check every service on the retail ledger against what was actually performed. A misattributed procedure can inflate the buyout by hundreds of dollars.
Front-line representatives have limited authority to adjust charges. If the first call doesn’t resolve it, ask for a practice manager at your local clinic or escalation to Banfield’s corporate client services team. Beyond that:
- File a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. Public filings tend to generate faster responses than direct emails.
- Dispute the charge with your bank if it was unauthorized or covers services never performed. You generally have 60 to 120 days from the statement date.
- Contact your state attorney general’s consumer protection office for larger amounts where Banfield refuses to engage.
Keep everything in writing. A paper or email trail is what protects you if the dispute escalates.
Pet Death and Relocation
If your pet passes away during the contract year, contact the wellness plan team right away. The standard contract terms still apply, but reaching out directly gives you the best chance of a waiver or reduced buyout. Bring veterinary documentation if the pet was treated somewhere other than Banfield.
Relocation doesn’t automatically void the contract. The plan can be used at any Banfield hospital nationwide, so moving within range of another location doesn’t change your obligations. For moves genuinely outside Banfield’s network, call the wellness plan team to discuss the situation; a move may give you leverage in negotiating an early termination, but it isn’t a guaranteed release.
Getting Medical Records After You Cancel
Your pet’s records stay with Banfield after cancellation. Vaccination history, exam notes, and treatment records remain accessible through your local clinic and may be viewable in the online portal for some time. Request a copy of the full medical file from your clinic before or shortly after canceling. Some clinics provide digital copies at no charge; others charge a small fee for printed records. You’ll need these when switching to a new veterinarian, boarding your pet, or traveling.
