How to Cancel Your American Airlines Credit Card

To cancel an American Airlines credit card, call the bank that issued it: Citi at 1-800-950-5114 for AAdvantage Platinum Select and MileUp cards, or Barclays at 866-928-3075 for Aviator cards.1Citi. Identify the Issuing Bank

American Airlines partners with two banks. Citi issues the AAdvantage Platinum Select and MileUp cards. Barclays issues the Aviator line. The bank’s name appears on the card and on the header of your statement. Each bank has its own cancellation number, its own refund policy, and its own retention playbook, so calling the wrong one wastes the call.

Time the Call Around the Annual Fee

The annual fee is why most people cancel, and the refund window is narrow. Citi refunds the annual fee if you cancel within 37 days of it posting to your account.3One Mile at a Time. Citi’s 37-Day Annual Fee Refund Policy: How It Works In Practice Barclays has historically allowed up to 60 days after the fee appears on your statement.4Doctor of Credit. Set a reminder a week or two before your card anniversary. That leaves room to weigh your options while the refund window is still open. Miss it and the fee is yours.

Protect Your AAdvantage Miles Before You Close

Miles already deposited in your AAdvantage account sit there independently of the credit card, so canceling doesn’t erase them directly. The risk is quieter. AAdvantage miles expire after 24 months without qualifying activity, and earning miles on a co-branded credit card counts as qualifying activity.5American Airlines. AAdvantage Terms and Conditions (Effective March 1, 2026) Close the card, stop flying American, and two years later your miles can disappear.

Before you call, log into your AAdvantage profile and confirm your balance. Make sure recent purchases have posted as miles. Purchases from the current billing cycle typically transfer a few days after your statement closes, so if you just spent heavily, let that statement cycle through first. If you fly American occasionally or shop through their portal, you have other ways to keep the miles alive. If the card was your only tether to the program, factor that in now.

Pay Off the Balance and Move Your Recurring Charges

Most issuers won’t close an account that carries a balance. Pay what your last statement shows, then look for anything that hasn’t posted yet.

Then work through several months of statements and flag every recurring charge: streaming services, subscriptions, utilities, gym memberships, anything that runs automatically. Move each one to a different payment method before you cancel. A recurring charge that hits a closed card triggers a decline, a late fee from the merchant, and cleanup work you didn’t plan for. This is where cancellations go wrong most often.

Making the Call

Have your card number, the security code, and a recent statement in front of you. After the automated menu you’ll reach a representative, often in retention. Their job is to keep you, so expect offers: a statement credit, an annual fee waiver for a year, bonus miles for hitting a spending target. If one of those changes your mind, fine. If not, decline and ask the representative to process a voluntary closure. Use that phrase. It records the closure as your decision rather than the bank’s, which reads differently on your credit report.6Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. I Want to Close My Credit Card Account. What Should I Do?

Get a confirmation number before you hang up. Write it down. If anything goes sideways later, that number is your proof.

Consider a Downgrade Instead

If your real goal is to stop paying the annual fee, ask about a product change to a no-fee card. A downgrade keeps the account open with its original opening date, which is generally better for your credit than closing.7NerdWallet. What Is a Credit Card Product Change, and How Does It Work?

For Citi AAdvantage cardholders, the usual target is the AAdvantage MileUp, which has no annual fee and still earns 2 miles per dollar on American Airlines purchases and at grocery stores.8Citi. American Airlines AAdvantage MileUp Card Spending on the MileUp counts as qualifying AAdvantage activity, which also solves the mileage expiration problem. You can request the product change on the same call you would otherwise use to cancel.

What Cancellation Does to Your Credit Score

Closing a card shrinks your total available credit. If you carry balances on other cards, that shrinks the denominator of your credit utilization ratio and pushes the percentage up. Utilization is one of the most influential factors in your score, and staying below 30 percent is a common benchmark, with lower being better.9TransUnion. How Closing Accounts Can Affect Credit Scores

Run the math before the call. If you have $3,000 in balances across all cards and $20,000 in combined limits, your utilization is 15 percent. Close a card with a $5,000 limit and utilization jumps to 20 percent. Close one with a $10,000 limit and you’re at 30 percent.

Account age is less urgent. A closed account in good standing stays on your credit report for up to 10 years and keeps contributing to your average age of accounts during that time.9TransUnion. How Closing Accounts Can Affect Credit Scores The age issue is slow-burn, not immediate. It’s another argument for a downgrade over an outright close.

If You Have a Barclays Aviator Card

You may not need to cancel in the traditional sense. Starting April 24, 2026, Barclays is transferring Aviator accounts to Citi. Aviator Red cardholders will automatically receive a new Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select World Elite Mastercard within six to eight weeks of April 27, 2026, with no new application required.10NerdWallet. Aviator Red Cardholders Moving to Citi AAdvantage Platinum If you were canceling because of Barclays specifically, the transition may resolve it. If you want out of the annual fee, you’ll still need to cancel or downgrade once the new Citi card arrives.

Confirm the Account Is Actually Closed

Don’t take the representative’s word for it. Over the next few weeks, log into the bank’s app or website and confirm the account shows a closed status with a zero balance. A stray interest charge or a delayed transaction can post after your closure request and reopen a balance you thought was settled.

You should also receive a final statement or confirmation letter. Once you have it, pull your credit report through AnnualCreditReport.com and confirm the account appears as “closed at consumer’s request” rather than “closed by creditor.” That distinction matters to future lenders. If the report shows the wrong status, dispute it directly with the credit bureau, and keep your confirmation number from the cancellation call as evidence.
