To cancel an Allstate policy, call customer service at 1-800-726-6033, contact your local Allstate agent, or send a signed written notice by certified mail. Allstate does not allow cancellations through its website or mobile app, so you’ll need to speak with someone or put the request in writing. The call itself is quick once you have your policy number and a specific cancellation date ready. The part that trips people up is the timing: canceling before replacement coverage is active can cost far more than the premium you’re trying to end.
What to Have Ready Before You Call
Pull your policy number first. Allstate policy numbers are ten digits and typically start with a 2.1Allstate Insurance Company. State Policy Contracts You’ll find it on your declarations page, your insurance ID card, or in your online account under “My Policy.”
Decide on an exact effective date for the cancellation. If you’re switching carriers, set the date to match the start date of your new policy so there’s no gap. If you sold a vehicle or moved out of a home, have supporting documents ready — a bill of sale, signed title transfer, or new lease. These prove the insurable interest has ended and may allow a retroactive cancellation date. When selling a car, submit a release-of-liability notice to your state’s DMV if your state requires one.
The Three Ways to Cancel
By Phone
Call 1-800-726-6033.2Allstate Insurance Company. Contact Allstate Say “cancel policy” at the automated menu, or use the prompts for policy management, to reach a representative. The agent verifies your identity, records the request, and processes the cancellation. Before you hang up, ask for a confirmation number and a written confirmation sent to your email. Most calls take about 15 minutes.
Through Your Local Agent
Contact the agent who sold you the policy. Local agents handle the paperwork directly and often use secure digital platforms for signatures. This route works well when the situation is complicated — estate cancellations, mid-claim policies, or policies with multiple endorsements — because a phone representative may need to escalate those anyway.
By Mail
For a paper trail, send a written cancellation notice by certified mail with return receipt requested. Include your full name, policy number, the effective date you want coverage to end, and a handwritten signature. Address it to your regional Allstate office. The return receipt proves delivery if a dispute later arises about when the request was received.
You Cannot Cancel Online
Allstate does not offer self-service cancellation through its website or mobile app. You can manage payments, view documents, and file claims online, but ending a policy requires direct contact with a person — by phone, through your agent, or through the email and chat options on Allstate’s support page.2Allstate Insurance Company. Refunds and Fees
When you cancel mid-term, Allstate calculates a refund for the unused portion of your premium. Two methods exist. A pro-rata refund returns the full value of the remaining coverage period with no penalty: you only pay for the days you were actually covered. A short-rate refund applies a percentage-based penalty on top of the pro-rata calculation, so you get back less. Insurers generally use pro-rata when they initiate the cancellation and may use short-rate when the policyholder cancels early.
Allstate does not publicly state that it charges a flat cancellation fee. Short-rate adjustments can still reduce your refund, and the difference can feel like a fee even if it isn’t labeled as one. The size of a short-rate penalty depends on how far into the policy term you cancel and on your state insurance department’s rules. Ask the representative for the exact refund amount before you confirm the cancellation.
Refunds come back through your original payment method. Credit card and bank draft refunds are credited electronically; if you paid by check, a paper check goes to the address on file. Checking your bank statements or the Allstate app within a few weeks of the effective date will confirm the refund has posted.
Don’t Create a Coverage Gap
This is where cancellations go wrong. If you still own a vehicle, every state except New Hampshire requires you to carry auto liability insurance.3Insurance Information Institute. Automobile Financial Responsibility Laws By State Canceling Allstate without a new policy already active creates a lapse, and the consequences stack up quickly.
In many states, your insurance company is required to notify the DMV electronically when your policy is canceled. That notification can trigger an automatic suspension of your registration, your license, or both, sometimes within days. Reinstatement fees range from around $50 to $600 depending on the state. If you’re caught driving during a lapse, fines and points on your driving record follow. A gap also makes you more expensive to insure later: even a lapse under 30 days can raise your next premium, and a longer gap can raise rates substantially.
The fix is simple. Buy the new policy first, confirm it’s active, then cancel Allstate with an effective date that matches the start date of your replacement coverage. If you’re canceling because you no longer own the vehicle and don’t plan to drive, make sure you’ve already surrendered or canceled the registration with the DMV so the state knows the car is off the road.
If the Vehicle or Home Has a Loan
Canceling insurance on a financed vehicle or a mortgaged home creates a separate problem. Your loan agreement almost certainly requires you to maintain coverage for the lender’s protection. Insurers typically notify lienholders of cancellations, so the lender will find out. The lender can then buy a policy on your behalf and bill you for it. This is called force-placed insurance. Federal rules require the servicer to notify you before placing it, but the coverage itself costs significantly more than a standard policy and often provides less protection.4Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Regulation 1024.37 Force-Placed Insurance
If you’re switching carriers, make sure the new policy lists the lienholder or mortgage company as a loss payee or additional interest before you cancel Allstate. Your new insurer can send proof of coverage to the lender directly, which closes the window where force-placement might start.
Canceling for a Deceased Policyholder
When a policyholder dies, the executor or administrator of the estate handles the cancellation. Allstate will need a certified death certificate and documentation proving the executor’s legal authority, usually Letters Testamentary issued by the probate court. A written request identifying the policy, the requested cancellation date, and mailing instructions for any refund check completes the paperwork.
Homeowners coverage doesn’t automatically end at the policyholder’s death, and that works in the estate’s favor because the property still needs protection while things are settled. A surviving spouse already listed on the policy can usually be moved to the primary insured role with a phone call and a copy of the death certificate. An executor who isn’t a named insured should keep paying the premium to avoid a lapse. Some insurers allow a grace period of 30 days or the remainder of the policy term for the executor to maintain or replace coverage. If the home sits vacant during probate, ask the insurer whether a vacant-property endorsement or separate policy is needed, since standard homeowners coverage often doesn’t apply to homes left empty for extended periods.
Confirm the Cancellation Went Through
Get written confirmation once the cancellation is processed. An email, letter, or notice visible in your Allstate online account all work. That document is your proof that coverage ended on a specific date by your choice, not because of nonpayment. The distinction matters: a voluntary cancellation looks very different from an insurer-initiated cancellation on your insurance history, and future carriers check this when pricing your next policy.
Log into the Allstate app or website and verify that any automatic payments or scheduled drafts are disabled. A canceled policy shouldn’t generate further charges, but billing systems occasionally lag behind cancellation processing. If an unexpected charge appears after the effective date, the written confirmation lets you dispute it quickly. Keep that confirmation accessible. You may need it months later when applying for new coverage, closing on a home sale, or responding to a DMV inquiry about your insurance history.
One common misconception worth clearing up: insurance companies do not report cancellations directly to credit bureaus the way a missed loan payment would. A lapse in coverage won’t show on your credit report. If you owe Allstate a remaining balance after cancellation and don’t pay it, though, that debt can be sent to collections, which does land on your credit report and can stay there for years.
