How to Cancel Xfinity Internet Service: ETF, Equipment Return, and Email

To cancel Xfinity internet, you have to speak with a representative — either by calling 1-800-934-6489, scheduling a callback at xfinity.com/cancel, or walking into an Xfinity Store. There is no way to complete the cancellation entirely online. Current residential internet plans are month-to-month with no annual contract and no early termination fee, so you can disconnect whenever you want without a penalty.1Xfinity. Xfinity Internet – Home Internet Service Plan on 20 to 30 minutes for the call, most of it a retention pitch before the representative actually processes the request.

What to Have Ready Before You Contact Xfinity

Pull up your latest bill or sign in to the Xfinity account portal and gather:

  • Your Xfinity ID (the username you use to sign in) and your account number, which appears on every bill.
  • The primary account holder’s name. Only the primary user or an authorized manager can cancel. If the account is in someone else’s name, that person needs to make the call or add you as an authorized user first.
  • Serial numbers for every piece of leased equipment. Check the barcode sticker on the bottom or back of each gateway, router, or streaming box.

One thing worth checking early: if you also have Xfinity Voice and have ever set a Voice Security PIN, Xfinity cannot reset it over the phone. A forgotten PIN has to be reissued through the website, and delivery can take anywhere from a couple of hours to several business days.2Xfinity. View or Change Your Xfinity Voice Security PIN Sort that out before the day you plan to cancel.

Three Ways to Start the Cancellation

All three paths end with a representative, but you can choose how you reach one.3Xfinity. How to Cancel, Pause, or Move Your Xfinity Services

  • Call 1-800-934-6489. When the automated menu asks what you need, say “cancel service” or choose the disconnect option. You’ll be routed to a retention specialist.
  • Schedule a callback at xfinity.com/cancel. You skip the hold time but wait for the return call.
  • Visit an Xfinity Store and tell the associate you want to disconnect. You can hand over your equipment at the same visit, which saves a separate return trip.

Whichever method you use, ask for a cancellation confirmation number before you hang up or leave. Write it down along with the date and the name of the person who handled it. If the account somehow stays active, that number is the fastest way to prove you already canceled.

Handling the Retention Pitch

Every cancellation call routes through retention, and the representative’s job is to keep you. Expect offers: a discounted rate for six or twelve months, a free speed upgrade, or waived fees on bundled services. Retention agents can typically offer 10 to 30 percent off your current rate, which is worth hearing out if price is your main reason for leaving.

If you’ve decided, be polite but direct. “I appreciate the offer, but I’d like to proceed with the cancellation” is enough. You don’t have to justify your decision or sit through multiple rounds of counteroffers. If the representative won’t move on, asking for a supervisor usually does.

Will You Owe an Early Termination Fee?

Xfinity has confirmed that none of its current residential internet promotions carry contracts or early termination fees.1Xfinity. Xfinity Internet – Home Internet Service Older term agreements did include ETFs that decreased by a fixed amount for each month completed, so a legacy contract could in theory still apply. If a representative mentions an ETF, ask them to identify the specific contract and its start date. There’s a good chance it was already fulfilled or has since converted to month-to-month.

Returning Your Equipment

Every piece of leased Xfinity hardware has to go back within 30 days of cancellation. Keeping a device, even by accident, triggers unreturned equipment charges that can run over $100 per unit.4Xfinity. How to Return Your Xfinity Equipment You have two return options.

Drop Off at an Xfinity Store

Bring every device, its power cord, and any remote controls. The associate scans each item and removes it from your account on the spot. Ask for a printed receipt listing every returned device and its serial number. That receipt is your proof if a charge shows up later.

Ship via UPS With a Prepaid Label

Sign in at xfinity.com, go to the Equipment Return page, select the devices, and print a UPS prepaid label. Pack everything in the original box or any sturdy padded box, attach the label, and drop it at any UPS location. Keep the top portion of the label with the tracking number as your receipt.4Xfinity. How to Return Your Xfinity Equipment You can also call 1-800-PICK-UPS to arrange a home pickup using that tracking number.

Only the device itself, its remote, and its power cord need to go back. You can keep HDMI, ethernet, and coaxial cables. Double-check serial numbers before sealing the box. Returning the wrong device doesn’t clear the one on your account, and you’ll still be charged for it.

Your Final Bill and Autopay

Xfinity generates a final bill after service ends. It can include prorated charges for the partial month you used, any outstanding equipment fees, and, if you were on an equipment installment plan for Xfinity Home devices, the remaining balance on that hardware.5Xfinity. What to Know When Canceling Your Xfinity Services Access to the online billing portal usually gets restricted shortly after cancellation, so the final statement may arrive by mail.

Autopay does not stop automatically when you cancel. Turn it off manually, either on the website under Billing and Pay then Manage Auto Pay, or in the Xfinity app under Manage Billing.6Xfinity. Set Up or Turn Off Automatic Payments on Your Xfinity Account You cannot turn it off on the same day a payment is processing, so don’t wait until the due date. Watch your bank statements for two billing cycles after cancellation. If an unexpected charge appears, call with your cancellation confirmation number and equipment return receipt in hand.

What Happens to Your Comcast.net Email

Canceling internet doesn’t automatically delete your comcast.net email, but keeping it depends on one condition: you must have logged in through the Xfinity Email website at least once during the 90 days before your disconnection date.7Xfinity. Xfinity Email for Former Customers FAQs If you haven’t, access ends permanently on the day your service ends.

If you meet the requirement, the address stays active with the same basic functionality, though you can no longer add or change accounts. To keep it long-term, sign in at least once every nine months.5Xfinity. What to Know When Canceling Your Xfinity Services Accounts inactive for 24 months are flagged, and beginning in 2025, inactive accounts are subject to permanent closure after a 90-day notification window.8Xfinity. Xfinity Email Activity Policy Once closed, emails are deleted and cannot be recovered. If your comcast.net address is tied to banking, insurance, or government logins, move those to a provider-neutral address like Gmail or Outlook before you cancel.

If You Also Have Xfinity Mobile

Canceling internet while keeping an Xfinity Mobile line triggers a $25 monthly surcharge on the mobile account. On the latest Xfinity Mobile pricing plan, the fee is $25 per account. On older plans, it’s $25 per line, which can add up quickly for families.5Xfinity. What to Know When Canceling Your Xfinity Services The surcharge exists because Xfinity Mobile pricing assumes you’re also an internet customer. If you’re switching internet providers, work out whether Xfinity Mobile still pencils out with the surcharge added in.
