How to Cancel Subscriptions on Google Pay or Google Play

To cancel a subscription on Google Pay or Google Play, open the Play Store app on Android (or go to play.google.com/store/account/subscriptions in any browser), tap your profile icon, choose Payments & subscriptions, then Subscriptions, pick the one you want to end, and tap Cancel subscription. A small number of subscriptions for Google’s own services are managed at payments.google.com instead. Uninstalling the app does not cancel anything, and charges continue until you complete these steps.1Google Play Help. Cancel, Pause, or Change a Subscription on Google Play

Which Platform Holds Your Subscription

Google Play handles subscriptions bought through the Play Store: apps, games, streaming services, in-app memberships. Google Pay tracks a wider set of recurring charges, including some Google services and third-party subscriptions linked to your Google account. Start with Google Play. If the subscription isn’t listed there, check Google Pay at payments.google.com.

Canceling in the Google Play Store App

On your Android device, open the Play Store app. Tap your profile icon in the top right, then Payments & subscriptions, then Subscriptions. Select the subscription, tap Cancel subscription, and follow the prompts.1Google Play Help. Cancel, Pause, or Change a Subscription on Google Play

Google may ask why you’re canceling. Pick any reason; it doesn’t affect whether the cancellation goes through. Once the confirmation screen appears, the subscription won’t renew at the end of the current billing period.

Canceling Through a Web Browser

If you don’t have an Android device, or you’d rather work on a larger screen, go to play.google.com/store/account/subscriptions. Sign in with the Google account tied to the subscription. Every active and expired subscription on that account will be listed. Click Manage next to the one you want to end, then Cancel subscription, and confirm.1Google Play Help. Cancel, Pause, or Change a Subscription on Google Play

This works on Windows, Mac, Chromebook, or even an iPhone, since you’re using Google Play through the web rather than the app.

Canceling Through Google Pay

Some Google-service subscriptions are managed through Google Pay rather than the Play Store. Sign in at payments.google.com and open Subscriptions and services. Find the product and select Manage. If a Cancel subscription option is there, use it. If it isn’t, the page will point you to the specific Google product where you can cancel.2Google Pay Help. Manage Recurring Payments and Subscriptions

Some subscriptions offer no cancel option through either Google Play or Google Pay. In that case, cancel directly on the provider’s own website or app. This is common with services that handle their own billing rather than routing through Google.2Google Pay Help. Deleting the App Does Not Cancel the Subscription

This trips up more people than anything else. Removing an app from your phone has no effect on the subscription tied to it. Google will keep charging your payment method on schedule until you go through the steps above. If you deleted an app months ago and just spotted recurring charges on your bank statement, the subscription has been running the whole time.1Google Play Help. Cancel, Pause, or Change a Subscription on Google Play

Removing a payment method doesn’t cancel anything either. If Google can’t charge the card on file, the subscription may eventually lapse after a grace period, but that’s not a reliable way to end it, and a failed payment can trigger account restrictions in the meantime.3Google Play Help. What Happens After You Cancel

Cancellation doesn’t cut your access immediately. You keep the subscription’s full benefits until the end of the billing period you’ve already paid for. Pay on the 5th of the month, cancel on the 12th, and you still have access through the 5th of the following month.1Google Play Help. Cancel, Pause, or Change a Subscription on Google Play

After that period ends, your account drops to whatever free tier the service offers. For most apps, that means losing premium features. For storage plans, the fallout is bigger.

Google One and Cloud Storage

If you cancel a Google One plan, your account returns to the standard 15 GB of free storage shared across Gmail, Google Drive, and Google Photos at the start of the month after your billing cycle ends. If your stored data exceeds that 15 GB, you won’t be able to send or receive email in Gmail, upload files to Drive, or back up photos.4Google One Help. Purchase, Cancellation and Refund Policies

Existing files aren’t wiped right away, but Google warns that content may be deleted if you stay over quota for two or more years. Before your cancellation takes effect, download what you need or trim your usage below 15 GB.4Google One Help. Purchase, Cancellation and Refund Policies

Pausing Instead of Canceling

If you’re undecided, some subscriptions let you pause. Pausing freezes billing for a set stretch, anywhere from one week to three months depending on the app. The pause starts at the end of the current billing period, and the subscription resumes automatically when the pause ends. Annual subscriptions can’t be paused.1Google Play Help. Cancel, Pause, or Change a Subscription on Google Play

Not every app supports pausing. Where it’s available, the option shows up on the same screen as the cancel button. If you don’t see it, the developer has turned it off.

Canceling a Free Trial Before You Get Charged

Free trials on Google Play convert to paid subscriptions automatically when the trial ends. Cancel any time during the trial and you won’t be charged. You still keep access for the rest of the trial period after canceling; access doesn’t cut off immediately.1Google Play Help. Cancel, Pause, or Change a Subscription on Google Play

The safest move is to cancel right after signing up. You get the full trial and eliminate any risk of forgetting. The steps are the same as for a paid subscription.

Getting a Refund for a Recent Charge

Canceling stops future charges but doesn’t reverse the most recent one. For that, you have to submit a separate refund request. The fastest route is Google’s automated refund tool on the Google Play Help refund page.5Google Help. Request a Refund on Google Play

If the automated tool doesn’t list your purchase, request manually. Go to play.google.com, click your profile picture, choose Payments & subscriptions, then Budget & order history. Find the charge, click Report a problem, and fill out the form asking for a refund.5Google Help. Request a Refund on Google Play

Google typically responds within one to four days. If approved, the money returns to the payment method used for the original purchase. How fast it lands depends on that method:6Google Play Help. Check the Status of a Refund Request for Google Play

Subscription Not Showing Up

The usual reason a subscription is missing from your list is that you’re signed into a different Google account than the one that owns it. If you use more than one Gmail address, try switching accounts in the Play Store app or check each one at play.google.com.3Google Play Help. Fix Problems With Subscriptions

If it still isn’t there, the subscription may not be billed through Google at all. Plenty of services, Netflix and Spotify among them, offer direct billing that bypasses Google Play. If you signed up on the service’s own website rather than in the Play Store, you have to cancel through that service. Check your bank or credit card statement for the merchant name. If it reads Google or Google Play, the subscription is somewhere in your Google account. If it shows the company’s own name, cancel with them.

Subscriptions Bought on an iPhone

If you subscribed through Apple’s App Store on an iPhone or iPad, Google has no record of it and can’t cancel it. Those subscriptions live in your Apple account, even when the same app exists on both platforms. Cancel at account.apple.com or through the subscription settings on your Apple device. The reverse holds too: a subscription bought through Google Play can’t be canceled through Apple.
