To cancel Rent the Runway, log in to your account on the company’s website, open your membership page, and use the “Manage Plan” section to submit a cancellation request. The cancellation takes effect at the end of your current billing period, and Rent the Runway does not issue prorated refunds for the days you don’t use. Before you submit, make sure every rented item is already back with the company or in transit, because unreturned pieces can generate late fees that climb to the item’s full retail price.1Rent the Runway. Cancel Through the Website
Log in, go to your account settings, and open “Manage Plan” under your membership page. Click the cancellation option and work through the prompts, which include picking a reason for leaving. You have to reach the final confirmation screen and submit; closing the browser before that last step leaves your subscription active and your next payment scheduled.
If you’d rather speak with someone, call customer service at 1-888-736-8888. Phone support runs Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. EST and weekends from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. EST. Live chat on the website and email at help@renttherunway.com are also available, though web and phone cancellations tend to be the cleanest.
Once you submit, your account dashboard should show the pending termination, and you should get a confirmation email. Save that email. The timestamp is your proof if a billing dispute comes up later.
Return Every Item Before You Cancel
Every garment, accessory, and garment bag has to come back before your cancellation fully processes. A prepaid UPS return label sits inside the pocket of each garment bag: peel it off, stick it on the outside pouch, and drop the package at any UPS location. If the label is missing, go to Order History and request a replacement, which UPS emails to you.2Rent the Runway. How to Return
Some zip codes are eligible for home pickup on membership orders. If yours qualifies, the option appears after you confirm your order and under “My RTR” in your account.2Rent the Runway. How to Return
Timing is strict. Items have to be dropped off on or before your rental end date. If that date lands on a Sunday or a holiday when UPS stores are closed, a UPS drop box still counts for that day. If you need a staffed UPS store, you have until noon on the next business day without incurring late fees.2Rent the Runway. How to Return
What You Give Up by Canceling
Cancellation isn’t immediate. You keep the service through the billing period you’ve already paid for, and after that period ends, no further charges are made and no new shipments authorized. The terms are explicit: no refunds on amounts already paid, and the membership can’t be terminated before the end of a billing period you’ve already been charged for.1Rent the Runway. Terms of Service
Loyalty rewards vanish the moment your membership ends. Canceling wipes out your accrued membership tenure and every unlocked reward, with no grace period to redeem them afterward.3Rent the Runway. RTR Rewards Terms and Conditions If you have anything sitting in your rewards balance, use it before you submit the cancellation.
Late Fees and Damage Charges
This is where careless timing gets expensive. Rent the Runway charges late fees for every day an item is overdue, and those fees can accumulate up to the item’s original retail value. For designer pieces, that can mean hundreds or thousands of dollars billed to the card on file.1Rent the Runway. Terms of Service
If you end up paying the maximum late fee on a Reserve Service rental (the full retail or comparable value), the company treats the item as purchased and you keep it.1Rent the Runway. Terms of Service Small consolation when a single gown could cost more than months of membership.
Damage is a separate line. The rental coverage built into your fee handles minor issues like small stains, rips, missing beads, and stuck zippers. It does not cover theft, loss, fire, or major damage.1Rent the Runway. Terms of Service Anything past what the coverage handles can be billed at up to the full retail replacement cost at the company’s discretion.
Pause Instead if You’re Not Sure
If you might come back, pausing keeps your account alive without the full monthly charge. Rent the Runway offers two versions: pause without items by returning everything before your next billing date, or pause with items and keep what you currently have at home for an added fee.1Rent the Runway. Terms of Service
Pausing with items preserves your membership tenure and your progress in the rewards program. Pausing without items freezes tenure — you don’t lose it, but you don’t build on it either. Rewards can’t be unlocked or redeemed while paused.3Rent the Runway. RTR Rewards Terms and Conditions
The exact pause fee and maximum pause length aren’t listed in the public Terms of Service; the terms direct subscribers to the FAQ, and current options show up in your account’s “Manage Plan” page. When the pause ends, your subscription resumes automatically at your previous rate.
If You’re Charged After Canceling
Start with Rent the Runway directly, either at 1-888-736-8888 or through live chat, with your cancellation confirmation email in hand. The timestamp on that email is your strongest evidence.
If the company won’t reverse an unauthorized charge, federal law lets you dispute it through your credit card issuer. Send a written dispute to your card issuer’s billing inquiry address within 60 days of the statement that first showed the error. Include your name, account number, a description of the charge, and a copy of your cancellation confirmation. The issuer must acknowledge your complaint within 30 days and resolve it within 90 days. While the investigation is open, you can withhold payment on the disputed amount without the issuer reporting you as delinquent or pursuing collection.4Federal Trade Commission. If the company added obstacles that made canceling harder than signing up, that pattern may also violate the FTC’s click-to-cancel rule and, in states like California, an automatic renewal law that requires online cancellation for online signups.5Federal Trade Commission.
