To cancel a Prudential life insurance policy, call Prudential’s Customer Service Center at 1-800-778-2255, ask for the surrender or cancellation form that matches your policy type, and return the signed form by mail or fax. If you hold a term policy, cancellation just ends the coverage and the premium payments. If you hold a permanent policy such as whole life, universal life, or variable universal life, surrendering it releases your cash value but can trigger surrender charges and a tax bill, so the decision deserves a closer look before you sign anything.
Start With Your Policy Type
The first thing to confirm is whether your policy is term or permanent, because the two cancel very differently. A term policy has no cash value. Stop paying and coverage ends, though it’s worth getting written confirmation rather than simply halting your bank draft.
Permanent policies build cash value that belongs to you. Accessing that value by surrendering the contract means navigating surrender charges, possible income tax, and the permanent loss of the death benefit. If your reason for canceling is that the premiums have become unaffordable, read the alternatives further down before you file surrender paperwork.
What You’ll Need Before You Call
Prudential has to verify your identity and match the request to the right contract. Have these ready:
- Policy number, from your annual statement, premium notice, or the original policy packet.
- Full legal name exactly as it appears on the application.
- Taxpayer Identification Number — your Social Security number for an individual owner, or an EIN if the owner is a trust, estate, or corporation.
- Date of birth, which the surrender form uses for identity verification.
Permanent policies require a formal surrender form, and Prudential uses different forms for different products. Group Universal Life policyholders use the “Request to End Coverage” form, and paid-up policyholders use the “Paid-up Surrender Request” form.1Prudential. Group Universal Life – Request to End Coverage You can find the right form through Prudential’s digital forms page or ask the representative to send it to you.2Prudential. Access Prudential Forms Digitally The form must be signed and dated. If the policy has been assigned to another owner or a trustee, that person signs instead of you.3Prudential. Paid-up Surrender Request – GUL/GVUL Some states require a notarized signature or a disinterested witness for larger surrenders, so ask whether that applies in your state.
How to Submit the Request
Call Prudential’s individual life insurance line at 1-800-778-2255, open weekdays 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern Time. If your policy number begins with “FE,” the correct number is 1-833-626-1865, open weekdays 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. ET.4Prudential Financial. Prudential’s online portal handles beneficiary changes, address updates, and form requests, but a full cash surrender generally requires a phone call plus signed paperwork submitted by mail or fax.5Prudential Financial. What You Actually Receive on a Permanent Policy
The check from a surrendered permanent policy is almost always smaller than the cash value printed on your statement. Insurance companies apply surrender charges during roughly the first 10 to 15 years of the contract. The charge is highest in the early years and drops each year until it reaches zero.
Two numbers matter. Your account value is the full amount growing on your behalf. Your cash surrender value is what Prudential actually pays after subtracting the surrender charge. Outstanding policy loans come out of the payout as well, and Prudential’s own guidance notes that an outstanding loan at surrender both reduces the cash paid out and can trigger immediate tax consequences.6Prudential Financial. What Is Cash Surrender Value of Life Insurance?
Before you file anything, ask Prudential for three figures as of today: the current cash surrender value, where you stand in the surrender charge schedule, and any outstanding loan balance. If the surrender charge drops notably in a few months, waiting is worth real money.
The Tax Bill
Any amount you receive on surrender above what you paid in premiums is taxable as ordinary income.7Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 72 – Annuities; Certain Proceeds of Endowment and Life Insurance Contracts Your total premiums come back tax-free; the gain above that is taxed at your ordinary rate. Prudential reports the distribution on IRS Form 1099-R.8Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Forms 1099-R and 5498
Policy loans complicate the picture. The taxable gain is figured on the gross cash value before the loan is repaid, not on the net check you receive. If you’ve borrowed heavily, you can owe income tax on money you never pocket.
Modified Endowment Contracts
A policy funded heavily in its early years may have been reclassified as a Modified Endowment Contract. The rule: cumulative premiums during the first seven years exceed what would pay the policy up in seven level annual payments.9Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 7702A – Modified Endowment Contract Defined For a MEC, distributions follow last-in, first-out treatment, so the gain is taxed first. If you are under 59½, an additional 10% penalty tax applies on top of the ordinary income tax.10Internal Revenue Service. Rev. Proc. 2001-42 Ask Prudential whether your policy is a MEC before you commit to surrendering.
Alternatives If Premiums Are the Real Problem
Full surrender ends the death benefit, applies surrender charges, and can create a tax bill. If the reason you’re canceling is cost, there are gentler options.
Reduced Paid-Up Insurance
Your existing cash value buys a smaller whole life policy with no further premiums due. The death benefit drops, but coverage stays in force for life and the cash value continues to grow. This election is typically irrevocable, so you can’t switch back to the original policy once it’s done.
Extended Term Insurance
This nonforfeiture option uses your cash value to buy term coverage at the original death benefit amount. The coverage lasts as long as the cash value will support it. No more premiums, no more cash value growth.
1035 Exchange
If you want to move into a different policy or an annuity, a 1035 exchange transfers the cash value without recognizing gain. Federal tax law allows the exchange of a life insurance contract for another life insurance contract, an endowment, an annuity, or a qualified long-term care contract with no gain or loss recognized.11Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 1035 – Certain Exchanges of Insurance Policies The money moves directly between insurers; you cannot take the cash in between. If you’re replacing Prudential coverage with another insurer’s policy, this is almost always better than surrendering and buying new.
Policy Loan
If you need cash but want to keep the coverage, borrow against the cash value. Prudential allows loans on most permanent products. The death benefit stays in place, reduced by the loan balance. Interest accrues, and unpaid loans eventually eat into both cash value and death benefit.6Prudential Financial. What Is Cash Surrender Value of Life Insurance? Free-Look Refunds for New Policies
If you bought the policy recently, you may still be inside the free-look period, which lets you cancel for a full refund of all premiums paid. Every state requires at least 10 days after policy delivery, and many states extend it to 20 or 30 days. The exact window is printed in your policy documents. Inside that window, contact Prudential, return the policy, and you get a complete refund with no surrender charges and no tax consequences.
Timing and Confirmation After You Submit
Once Prudential has the signed form, processing typically takes two to four weeks. Prudential verifies your identity, checks for outstanding loans, calculates the final surrender value, and confirms there are no competing claims. You should receive a written confirmation that the contract is no longer in force.
If the policy has cash surrender value, Prudential issues a check or direct deposit for the net amount after surrender charges and any loan repayment. Track your account online during the wait. Keep every document: the certified mail receipt or fax confirmation, the completed form, and the final confirmation letter. If 30 days pass with no confirmation, call customer service and reference your submission date.
