How to Cancel Progressive Leasing: Returns, Payoff, and Credit Impact

To cancel Progressive Leasing, call customer service at (877) 898-1970, tell the representative you want to end the lease, and arrange to return the merchandise. Progressive’s policy is that you can cancel at any time without a penalty, and you owe nothing beyond the lease-to-own costs that already accrued before the cancellation.1Progressive Leasing. Can I Cancel My Lease The call is the easy part. What takes attention is the return, the money already paid, and making sure the automatic drafts actually stop.

Make the Cancellation Call

Cancellation runs through the phone line. Progressive doesn’t offer a way to end a lease through its website or app; the app handles payments and scheduling, but closing the account requires speaking with a representative.2Progressive Leasing. Talk to Us

Before you dial, find your Lease ID. It appears in the approval email Progressive sent when the lease was created, and it’s also visible in the Progressive Leasing mobile app under your account details.3Progressive Leasing. Progressive Leasing Help Center

When you reach a representative, say clearly that you want to cancel the lease, not just return an item. The two requests can trigger different workflows, and a return handled only through the store doesn’t necessarily close out your payment obligation on Progressive’s side. Ask for written confirmation of the cancellation by email. If you only get a verbal reference number, write it down during the call. That number is your proof if a billing question comes up later.

Return the Merchandise

Cancellation isn’t complete until the item goes back. Progressive decides the return path based on the retailer and the type of merchandise: they’ll either direct you to bring it to the store where you got it, or ship it back to Progressive directly.4Progressive Leasing. Are Returns Allowed You don’t choose which.

When the return goes through the retailer, the store issues a credit invoice to Progressive, and Progressive refunds any funds owed for the leased merchandise.5Progressive Leasing. Post-Signing – Section: Cancellations and Partial Cancellations Send the item back in good working order with the original accessories, including power cords, remotes, and cables. Missing parts or damage beyond normal use can complicate the return and shrink any refund. Whichever route you take, keep the return receipt. It’s your evidence that the item left your hands on a specific date.

What You’ll Owe

Progressive’s own language is that after cancellation you owe “nothing further except unpaid lease-to-own costs.”1Progressive Leasing. Can I Cancel My Lease In practice, that means any amount already due at the time you cancel still has to be paid. Being behind on payments doesn’t erase them.

The initial payment you made at signing isn’t a separate deposit. Progressive treats it as the first scheduled payment under the 12-month lease-to-own total.6Progressive Leasing. FAQs Whether any portion of what you’ve paid comes back depends on timing, and the earlier you cancel, the less you’ve put in. Completing a full 12-month agreement can cost more than double the item’s original retail price, so every payment made before cancellation is money spent on something you won’t keep.7Progressive Leasing. How Does Progressive Leasing Calculate My Remaining 12 Month Lease-to-Own Total If you’ve already decided to cancel, acting quickly matters.

Consider the Early Purchase Option First

If the item itself is fine and the problem is the long-term cost, buying it out may serve you better than returning it. Within the first 90 days of the lease, Progressive’s early purchase option lets you buy the merchandise for the cash price plus only the lease-to-own cost accrued during those 90 days.8Progressive Leasing. What Are My Early Purchase Options You still pay more than the sticker price, but it’s the cheapest path to ownership Progressive offers.

After 90 days, early purchase is still available for less than the remaining 12-month total, though the discount shrinks the longer you wait.6Progressive Leasing. FAQs Retailers can’t set this up for you. Call Progressive at (877) 898-1970 to activate the option, then manage the payoff through the MyAccount portal online.8Progressive Leasing. Stop the Automatic Payments

Progressive pulls payments automatically from the card you provided at signing, so cancelling the lease doesn’t automatically stop a draft that’s already queued up. To block a specific upcoming payment, you have to call at least three business days before the payment date. Miss that window and the payment processes as scheduled; Progressive cannot reverse it on their end.9Progressive Leasing. What if I Need to Stop a Payment

If the primary card fails, Progressive attempts the secondary payment method on file. If both fail, a nonsufficient funds fee may apply.9Progressive Leasing. What if I Need to Stop a Payment Watch your bank statements for at least 30 days after you cancel. If a charge posts after your confirmed cancellation date, the confirmation email or reference number is what you use to dispute it with Progressive and, if needed, with your bank.

What Cancelling Does to Your Credit

Progressive Leasing is a lease-to-own program rather than a credit product, and the company does not report applications to the credit bureaus. It may, however, report information about an active lease to consumer reporting agencies, which means late payments, missed payments, and defaults can show up on your credit report.10Progressive Leasing. Does Progressive Report to Credit Bureaus

Cancelling with a zero balance and returning the merchandise promptly should have little credit impact. The damaging scenario is the opposite one: stopping payments without formally cancelling and returning the item. That isn’t a cancellation; it’s a default. Once the account is charged off and sent to a third-party collection agency, the collection entry can hurt your score and remain on your report for up to seven years.

Keep Your Paper Trail

Keep the cancellation confirmation, the return receipt, and any emails or chat transcripts from Progressive together in one place. If Progressive or a collection agency contacts you later claiming a balance you don’t recognize, those documents are your defense. Pull your credit report about 60 days after cancellation to confirm nothing unexpected was reported, and if something inaccurate shows up, dispute it directly with the credit bureau listing the entry.
