How to Cancel Planet Fitness: Methods, Fees, and Deadlines

To cancel Planet Fitness, contact your home club (the location where you signed up) in one of three ways: visit in person, mail a written cancellation letter, or log into your online account if your club allows it. Whichever method you use, the request must reach the club at least seven days before your next billing date, or you’ll be charged for another month.

The Three Cancellation Methods

Every cancellation routes through your home club, so you’ll need its address no matter which route you take.

In Person

Walk into your home club during staffed hours, tell the front desk you want to cancel, and sign a cancellation form. You’ll get a confirmation receipt on the spot, which makes this the fastest method and the one with the cleanest paper trail. Bring a photo ID and either your membership tag or your membership number so staff can pull up your account without delays.

By Mail

Write a letter requesting cancellation and address it to the manager at your home club’s street address. Include your full name, date of birth, billing address, and membership number. Send it certified mail with return receipt requested. The return receipt is your evidence if a billing dispute comes up later. Because delivery takes time, send the letter well before the monthly deadline.

Online

Some members can cancel by logging into their account on the Planet Fitness website. Availability depends on your membership type and home club. If you log in and don’t see a cancellation option, your club requires in-person or mail cancellation instead.

The Billing Deadline That Decides Whether You Owe Another Month

Planet Fitness bills monthly memberships on the 17th of each month. To avoid the next cycle’s charge, your cancellation notice must reach the club by the 10th. That seven-day buffer covers processing on the club’s end.

The deadline applies regardless of method. Walking in on the 10th works. A certified letter that arrives on the 12th does not. If you’re mailing your cancellation, back-date your send date by at least a week. The same 10th-of-the-month window applies if you’re trying to cancel before an upcoming annual fee posts.

What You’ll Owe at Cancellation

What you pay depends on the agreement you signed at signup.

  • Commitment memberships, typically 12 months: canceling before the commitment period ends triggers a buyout fee. It’s usually $58 and can run up to $99 depending on location and plan.
  • Month-to-month memberships: no buyout fee. You can cancel anytime, but you still owe any outstanding balance and any annual fee already assessed.

The annual fee is $49 at most locations, sometimes $39 during promotions. Planet Fitness typically charges it about two months after signup and then annually around that same time. If your annual fee is about to hit and you want to avoid it, make sure the cancellation is processed before that billing date.

Situations That Waive the Buyout Fee

Planet Fitness waives the early cancellation buyout fee in a few specific situations:

  • You move more than 25 miles from any Planet Fitness location and provide proof of your new address.
  • A medical condition prevents you from using the gym, and you provide documentation from a doctor.
  • You are on military deployment.

Canceling on behalf of a deceased member requires a copy of the death certificate. You can bring it to the home club in person with your own ID, or mail it with a cancellation letter that includes the deceased member’s name, date of birth, mailing address, and membership number if you have it. Include your own contact information so the club can confirm the account is closed. Follow up by phone before the next billing date to make sure the cancellation went through.

Freezing Instead of Canceling

If your reason for canceling is temporary, freezing your membership may be a better fit. A freeze pauses your monthly charges without closing the account, so you avoid paying an enrollment fee to rejoin later.

The freeze option is typically limited to two consecutive months, once per calendar year. During a freeze, you don’t pay monthly dues, but the annual fee still applies if it falls within the freeze window. Request a freeze through your home club.

If You Just Signed Up: State Cooling-Off Periods

If you signed up recently and want out, check your state’s consumer protection laws. Many states give you a short window, usually three to five business days, to cancel any gym contract without penalty and get a full refund. This right exists regardless of what the membership agreement says, because state law overrides contract terms. The cooling-off period starts when you sign the contract.

Confirming the Cancellation Went Through

Keep your confirmation. That’s the signed form from an in-person visit, the certified mail return receipt, or a confirmation email from an online cancellation. Then watch your bank or credit card statements for the next two billing cycles. If a charge appears after your cancellation should have taken effect, the confirmation is your leverage.

To dispute an unauthorized charge with your bank or credit card company, send a written dispute within 60 days of the statement date that first showed the error. Include your name, account number, the date and amount of the charge, and a copy of your cancellation confirmation. Your card issuer must acknowledge the dispute within 30 days and resolve the investigation within two billing cycles. During that time, the creditor cannot report the disputed amount as delinquent or take any action that damages your credit.1Federal Trade Commission. Fair Credit Billing Act
