How to Cancel Planet Fitness Membership Online

You can cancel your Planet Fitness membership online only if your home club supports it through the member portal. Many franchise locations still require you to cancel in person or by certified mail. Whichever route applies to you, submit your request by the 10th of the month to stop the next monthly charge, and by the 25th of the month before your annual fee is due to avoid that charge.1Planet Fitness. Whether Your Club Supports Online Cancellation

Planet Fitness operates as a franchise, so individual clubs set some of their own policies. Corporate-owned locations and clubs in certain states offer online cancellation through the member portal. Others don’t. Log in to your account at the Planet Fitness website and look under your account settings. If a cancellation option is there, you can use it. If it isn’t, your club requires one of the traditional methods.

A few states now require gyms that allow online sign-up to also allow online cancellation. If you joined through the Planet Fitness website or app in one of those states, your club has to give you a digital path out. The FTC’s click-to-cancel rule, finalized in late 2024, applies more broadly: it requires businesses to make canceling a recurring subscription as simple as signing up, and gym memberships fall under it.2Federal Trade Commission. Federal Trade Commission Announces Final Click-to-Cancel Rule Making It Easier for Consumers to End Recurring Subscriptions and Memberships If your club made signing up a one-click affair but tells you to drive in to cancel, that rule is designed to stop that practice.

Canceling Through the Member Portal

Sign in at the Planet Fitness website using the email and password tied to your membership. Open the section labeled “Manage Membership” or “My Account.” If online cancellation is enabled at your club, you’ll see the option there, and the system will walk you through a short series of confirmation prompts.

Have your membership number ready before you start. It’s printed on the keytag you received when you joined and also shows up in the Planet Fitness app under your profile. The form checks what you enter against the billing system, so confirm that your email address and home club are current. If anything is out of date, fix it first. Mismatched information stalls the process.

Click through every prompt until you reach a confirmation screen. Don’t close the browser before you see it. Take a screenshot. A confirmation email should arrive shortly after, and keeping both the screenshot and the email gives you solid documentation if a billing dispute comes up later.

If Online Cancellation Isn’t Available

Two methods work at every Planet Fitness location regardless of franchise policy: visiting your home club or sending a letter.1Planet Fitness. Planet Fitness Customer Service and FAQ

To cancel in person, go to the front desk at the specific club listed as your home location. Bring a photo ID and your keytag. You’ll fill out a cancellation form at the counter. Ask for a copy of the completed form before you leave. That paper is your receipt.

To cancel by mail, write a letter to your home club’s address stating that you want to cancel your membership. Include your name, membership number, address, and phone number. Send it by certified mail with return receipt requested. The certified receipt proves the club received your letter, and that proof is what you’ll need if charges keep coming afterward. Regular mail technically works, but losing proof of delivery is where most billing disputes fall apart.

Deadlines That Decide What You’re Charged

Planet Fitness bills monthly dues on a set date, commonly the 17th. To stop the next charge, your cancellation needs to be submitted by the 10th of that month.1Planet Fitness. Planet Fitness Customer Service and FAQ Miss that window and you’ll be billed one more time. Your specific billing date can differ depending on when you signed up and your club’s policy, so check your account or original agreement for the exact date.

The annual fee runs on its own schedule. Planet Fitness charges an annual fee once a year on top of your monthly dues. To avoid it, your cancellation must be received by the 25th of the month before the annual fee posts.1Planet Fitness. Planet Fitness Customer Service and FAQ Once that fee hits your account, it generally isn’t refundable. If your annual fee date is approaching, that deadline should drive your timing more than the monthly one.

After you cancel, you can typically keep using the gym through the end of the billing period you’ve already paid for. Once that period ends, your keytag and app access deactivate.

Buyout Fees If You’re Still in a Commitment

If you signed up for a 12-month commitment membership and want out before the year is up, you’ll owe a buyout fee. The amount is typically around $58 and can vary by location. That fee is separate from any remaining monthly dues. Members on month-to-month plans without a commitment period don’t face this charge.

Whether you’re on a commitment plan isn’t always obvious from your account. Both Classic and PF Black Card memberships can come with or without a 12-month commitment depending on the promotion you signed up under.3Planet Fitness. Gym Memberships – Planet Fitness Check your original agreement or call your home club before you start the cancellation. In some cases, waiting a month or two to clear the commitment period costs less than the buyout fee would.

Freezing Instead of Canceling

If you’re not sure you want to leave for good, freezing your membership keeps it on hold without the hassle of re-enrolling later. Most clubs allow a freeze of one to three months, and some locations approve up to six months in certain circumstances.

During a freeze, you aren’t charged your regular monthly dues, though some franchise locations charge a small monthly freeze fee. One detail trips people up: your annual fee can still be charged while your membership is frozen. If the annual fee date falls inside your freeze window, that charge still hits unless you’ve canceled outright. Ask your club manager to confirm the freeze terms, and specifically whether the annual fee applies, before you commit to this option.

Confirming the Cancellation Actually Stuck

Save every piece of documentation: the confirmation screenshot, the confirmation email, the certified mail receipt, or the copy of the in-person form. These are your leverage if a charge shows up later.

Watch your bank or credit card statements for at least two billing cycles after your cancellation date. Residual charges happen more often than they should. If you spot one, contact your home club first with your cancellation documentation. If the club doesn’t resolve it, your bank’s chargeback process is the next step, and the confirmation email or certified mail receipt is exactly what the bank will ask for.

If your account still shows as active in the app or on the website after your final billing date has passed, call your home club directly. A status that hasn’t updated doesn’t automatically mean your cancellation failed, but getting written confirmation protects you from future charges.
