How to Cancel Planet Fitness Membership by Phone

You generally cannot cancel a Planet Fitness membership by phone. The chain’s standard policy limits cancellations to two methods: visiting your home club in person or sending a certified letter to that club’s address. A phone call to the front desk, to corporate, or to billing will not end your membership, and neither will an email or a tap inside the app. There are narrow exceptions for active-duty military members and for residents of states whose consumer laws require gyms to accept cancellations through additional channels, but for most members, the front desk or the post office is the answer.

When a Phone Cancellation Might Actually Work

A few states have laws requiring health clubs to accept cancellations through multiple channels, including by phone, online, or by email. If you signed up in one of those states, the gym may be legally required to honor a digital or telephone cancellation regardless of its standard policy. Your state attorney general’s office can tell you whether your state provides that protection and what to do if the club refuses to comply.

The Federal Trade Commission finalized its “click-to-cancel” rule in late 2024, with most provisions taking effect 180 days after publication in the Federal Register.1Federal Trade Commission. Federal Trade Commission Announces Final Click-to-Cancel Rule Making It Easier for Consumers to End Recurring Subscriptions and Memberships The rule prohibits businesses from failing to provide a simple mechanism to cancel a recurring charge and immediately stop billing. It covers gym memberships, and in practice a gym that lets you sign up online or by phone should be required to let you cancel the same way. If you believe a gym is violating the rule, you can file a complaint at ftc.gov/complaint.

Active-duty servicemembers have their own path. The Servicemembers Civil Relief Act lists gym memberships as covered consumer contracts. If you receive military orders to relocate for at least 90 days to a location that doesn’t support the contract, and the membership was entered into before those orders, you can end it by delivering written notice along with a copy of your orders. The notice can be sent by hand, email, or through the contract’s standard termination process, and it must specify the date you want service to end.2Office of the Law Revision Counsel. United States Code Title 50 Section 3956 – Termination of Certain Consumer Contracts The gym cannot charge an early termination fee, and any advance payments covering the period after termination must be refunded within 60 days.

Outside these situations, expect to use one of the two methods below.

Canceling in Person at Your Home Club

Walking into your home club is the fastest way out. Go during staffed front-desk hours, not during overnight unstaffed access. Tell the staff you want to cancel and they’ll hand you a form to fill out. The whole thing takes about ten minutes.

Staff will likely ask why you’re leaving and may offer to freeze your account or move you to a cheaper plan. You don’t have to explain anything, and you can decline any retention offer. What you do have to do is leave with proof: a printed copy of the completed cancellation form, or a confirmation email. Without documentation, you have no way to show the request was ever made, and disputes over whether someone actually canceled come up more often than they should.

Your home club is the specific location where you signed up, and it is the only location authorized to process your cancellation. If you’ve moved and never transferred your membership, you’re still tied to that original club for this purpose.

Canceling by Certified Mail

If you can’t get to your home club, certified mail is the other option. Your letter should include:

  • Full name and date of birth
  • Membership ID number, printed on your key tag or visible in the app under your account
  • Mailing address, phone number, and email
  • A clear cancellation request. “I am requesting immediate cancellation of my Planet Fitness membership” is enough
  • Your signature and the date

Send it to your home club’s mailing address, not Planet Fitness corporate. Look up the address at planetfitness.com/gym-locations. Use USPS Certified Mail with Return Receipt Requested. It costs a few dollars and gives you a tracking number plus proof of delivery. Keep the postal receipt and track delivery at usps.com. The cancellation deadline runs from when the club receives the letter, not when you mail it, so build in several days for transit.

Timing Your Cancellation to Avoid Extra Charges

Planet Fitness billing deadlines don’t bend. Miss one by a day and you’ll pay for another cycle with no prorating.

  • Monthly dues: your cancellation must be processed by the 10th of the month. Cancel after the 10th and you’ll be billed for one more month.
  • Annual fee: to avoid the annual enhancement fee, typically around $49, your cancellation must reach the club by the 25th of the month before the fee is due. The annual fee usually hits roughly two months after your original sign-up date, so check your agreement for the exact date.3Planet Fitness. Customer Service and FAQ
  • No partial refunds. Cancel on the 2nd and you’ve already been charged for the full month. Planet Fitness doesn’t refund unused time.

Mail cancellations are the trickiest because what counts is when the club receives your letter. If your annual fee hits on June 1, your letter needs to arrive by May 25, which means mailing it around May 20 to be safe.

Early Cancellation and Buyout Fees

Planet Fitness offers both no-commitment memberships and 12-month commitment contracts. No-commitment plans let you cancel at any time with no penalty beyond your final monthly charge. Commitment contracts lock you in for a year, and leaving early triggers a buyout fee, typically $58, though some locations charge up to $99.

The buyout applies regardless of membership tier. Classic or Black Card, the fee is the same. To check whether you’re still in a commitment period, log into your account at planetfitness.com and look under “View & Update Records” for a digital copy of your original agreement.

Freezing Instead of Canceling

If the reason you want out is temporary, an injury, a long trip, a tight month or two, freezing your membership pauses access and payments without closing the account. A standard freeze runs one to three months, and some clubs allow longer pauses for medical or military reasons with supporting documentation.

Freezing typically requires calling or visiting your home club; the app doesn’t handle freeze requests. Some clubs charge $5 to $15 per month during the freeze, while others waive it with a doctor’s note or travel documentation. Ask about the annual enhancement fee before agreeing to a freeze, because it may still apply while your membership is paused.

Confirming the Cancellation Stuck

A cancellation is only as good as the proof behind it. Keep the completed form, the confirmation email, or the certified mail receipt with delivery tracking somewhere you can find it months later.

Watch your bank or credit card statements for at least two billing cycles after your expected termination date. Planet Fitness typically drafts monthly dues around the 17th. If a charge shows up after cancellation should have taken effect, contact your home club and ask for the manager or billing supervisor. Bring your documentation. Because each location is independently owned, refund decisions rest with the franchise, not corporate.

If the club refuses to fix the charge, dispute it with your bank or credit card company. Provide the cancellation confirmation and the date the club received your notice. Banks tend to move on disputes backed by documentation and a clear timeline.

Don’t Just Stop the Payments

Closing your bank account, replacing your card, or filing a stop-payment order does not end your Planet Fitness membership. The contract stays active, unpaid balances accumulate, and the debt eventually gets sold to a collections agency. A collections account can sit on your credit report for years, all over what began as a $15-per-month membership. However frustrating the cancellation process, complete the formal steps first. Stop the contract, then stop the payments.
