How to Cancel Planet Fitness and Avoid the Annual Fee

To cancel a Planet Fitness membership, go to your home club in person or send a cancellation letter to that club by certified mail. Your notice has to reach the club by the 10th of the month, because monthly dues draft on the 17th and a late notice means one more charge you generally can’t get back.1Planet Fitness. Cancel in Person at Your Home Club

Your home club is the specific location where you originally signed up, not any Planet Fitness you happen to walk into.1Planet Fitness. Customer Service and FAQ Bring a photo ID and either your membership key tag or your membership number, which you can pull up in the Planet Fitness app.

Ask the front desk for a cancellation form and fill it out on the spot. Watch the staff member enter the request into the system, and ask for a printed or emailed confirmation before you leave. That confirmation is your proof. Without it, you’re depending on the club’s internal records, and disputes over whether a cancellation was actually submitted come up more often than they should.

Cancel by Certified Mail

If you’ve moved away from your home club or can’t get there during staffed hours, mail your cancellation letter to that club’s street address. Don’t send it to Planet Fitness corporate. Look up the address at planetfitness.com/gym-locations.

Your letter needs your full name and address as they appear on the account, your membership ID number, a clear statement that you’re canceling effective immediately, and the date and your signature. Send it USPS Certified Mail with Return Receipt Requested. The tracking number and delivery signature give you dated proof the club received the letter. Keep the receipt. If the club later says nothing arrived, that receipt ends the argument. Allow up to seven business days after delivery for the cancellation to process in billing.1Planet Fitness. Can You Cancel Online or by Phone?

The Federal Trade Commission’s Click-to-Cancel rule, finalized in October 2024, requires recurring subscription services, including gyms, to make canceling as easy as signing up.2Federal Trade Commission. Federal Trade Commission Announces Final Click-to-Cancel Rule Companies must offer at least one remote cancellation method, such as a website form or toll-free number, and cannot impose unreasonable barriers like long holds or repeated upsell attempts.3Federal Trade Commission. Negative Option Rule

Rollout across Planet Fitness franchises has been uneven. Call your home club and ask what remote options they currently offer. If you signed up online and the club insists you have to come in, the FTC rule gives you grounds to push back.

Time It to Avoid the Next Charge

Monthly dues draft on the 17th. Your cancellation notice has to be received by the 10th to stop that draft.1Planet Fitness. Customer Service and FAQ Submit on the 11th and you’ll be billed one more time, and that charge is generally not refundable.

The club counts from when it receives your notice, not when you send it, and billing changes can take up to seven business days to process. If you’re mailing, add postal delivery time and get the letter out at least two weeks before the 10th.

Avoiding the $49 Annual Fee

Planet Fitness bills a $49 annual fee roughly two months after signup and then each year around that same date. To avoid it, your cancellation has to be received by the 25th of the month before the annual fee is due. Check your original signup date or ask the front desk when your annual fee is scheduled. Once it’s been charged, it’s generally not refundable.4Planet Fitness. Planet Fitness Homepage

The $58 Buyout If You’re Still Under Commitment

If your membership includes a 12-month commitment and you cancel before it ends, Planet Fitness charges a $58 buyout fee, which may vary slightly by location.5NorthJersey.com. Want to Cancel Your Planet Fitness Membership? Prepare for a Workout Month-to-month members with no remaining commitment don’t owe a buyout, just proper notice by the 10th.

Not sure where you stand? Check your original membership agreement through your online account, or ask the front desk. Canceling one month before the commitment ends still triggers the buyout, so if you’re close, riding it out may cost less. If any charges are past due on the account, expect the club to require you to settle them before it processes the cancellation.

Freeze Instead of Cancel

If the reason you want out is temporary, a freeze may fit better than canceling and re-enrolling later. Planet Fitness lets members freeze accounts for one to three months under standard circumstances, and longer for medical or military reasons with documentation.

Freeze cost varies by location. Some corporate-owned clubs offer free freezes for up to two months with a valid reason. Franchise locations may charge $5 to $15 per month during the freeze. One thing to watch: the annual fee can still hit during a freeze if it falls on your billing anniversary. To freeze, visit the front desk at your home club or call to ask about the process there.

If You Just Signed Up

Most states have health club cooling-off laws that give consumers a short window, typically three to five business days after signing, to cancel a gym contract with a full refund and no fees. A few states run longer, up to seven, ten, or fifteen days. Some states leave the window to whatever the contract itself specifies, so read your agreement.

To use this right, notify your home club in writing within the window. The clock usually starts the day after you sign, and weekends or holidays may not count depending on your state’s law. Inside the cooling-off period, the gym must refund any payments you’ve made, and the buyout fee doesn’t apply.

Verify the Cancellation and Watch Your Statements

After your cancellation is processed, you should get a confirmation by email or a printed receipt. If nothing arrives within a few business days, call the home club and ask them to confirm your account status. Silence isn’t success.

Watch your bank or credit card statements for at least two full billing cycles past the cancellation date. If a charge shows up after your final expected payment, contact the club first with your cancellation confirmation in hand. If they won’t fix it, your bank can start a chargeback dispute using the same paperwork: your certified mail receipt, delivery confirmation, or the printed cancellation form from your in-person visit. The paper trail you built during cancellation is what makes those disputes winnable.
