How to Cancel PayPal Subscriptions: Web, App, and Refunds

To cancel a PayPal subscription, log in, open Settings, go to Payments, click “Subscriptions and saved businesses,” select the merchant, and click cancel. The mobile app follows a similar path through the menu. Knowing how to cancel PayPal subscriptions is only half the job: this stops PayPal from sending future payments, but it does not end your contract with the merchant or refund charges already processed.1PayPal. Canceling on the PayPal Website

Once you’re logged in, the desktop process is four clicks:

  • Click the gear icon near the top-right corner of your dashboard to open Settings.
  • Select the “Payments” tab.
  • Click “Subscriptions and saved businesses” (sometimes labeled “Automatic Payments”).
  • Click the name of the service you want to stop paying.

On the merchant’s profile page, click the cancel or stop-payment option and confirm when PayPal asks whether you’re sure. The status updates immediately to show the billing agreement is no longer active.1PayPal. Automatic Payment – Update Recurring Payments

Canceling in the Mobile App

The app uses a slightly different path:

  • Tap the three-line menu icon.
  • Tap “Subscriptions,” “Linked Businesses,” or “Pay Bills” (the label varies by version).
  • Tap the service you want to cancel.
  • Tap “Account” or “Manage,” then select “Stop Paying with PayPal.”
  • Tap “Unlink” to finalize.

The result is the same as on desktop. PayPal revokes the merchant’s authorization to pull future payments from your account.1PayPal. Automatic Payment – Update Recurring Payments

Confirming the Cancellation Went Through

Check two things after you cancel. Go back to the “Subscriptions and saved businesses” page and verify the merchant now shows an inactive or cancelled status. That label means PayPal will reject future billing attempts from that merchant. Then look for a confirmation email in your inbox and keep it. If a charge somehow goes through later, the email with its date and cancellation details is your strongest piece of evidence in a dispute.

Cancel With the Merchant Too

Stopping the PayPal payment is not the same as ending the service. You’ve cut off the payment method; you have not terminated the contract. Gym memberships, software licenses, and subscription boxes often stay active even after you stop paying through PayPal. The merchant may try to bill you through other means, charge late fees, or eventually send the balance to a collection agency.

Cancel directly with the merchant first, then cancel the PayPal billing agreement as a follow-up. That way the contract is properly terminated and the payment channel is closed. If a merchant makes canceling unreasonably difficult, the Restore Online Shoppers’ Confidence Act requires any online seller using a recurring billing model to provide a simple way for you to stop the charges.2Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 8403 – Negative Option Marketing on the Internet

Getting a Refund for Charges Already Made

Canceling does not refund past payments. Those charges stand unless the merchant reverses them or you successfully dispute the transaction. PayPal’s own guidance is to contact the seller first, because they can issue a refund directly.3PayPal. I Want My Money Back – Can I Cancel a Payment

If the merchant refuses or ignores you, open a dispute through PayPal’s Resolution Center. You have 180 days from the transaction date to report an unauthorized charge.4PayPal. Solving Problems with Unauthorized Transactions The window for billing errors like duplicate charges on an automatic payment may be shorter, so file as soon as you notice the problem.

When Charges Keep Coming After You Cancel

Occasionally a merchant continues billing after you’ve canceled through PayPal. Start with PayPal’s Resolution Center: log in, go to the Resolution Center, click “Open a dispute for a transaction,” and select the unauthorized charge. PayPal investigates and can reverse the transaction if the merchant can’t prove you authorized it.4PayPal. Solving Problems with Unauthorized Transactions

Avoid jumping straight to a bank chargeback. Filing a chargeback through your bank rather than resolving the issue inside PayPal can trigger a negative balance on your PayPal account, and PayPal may limit or suspend the account. Treat chargebacks as a last resort.

Using a Bank Stop Payment as a Backup

If PayPal’s tools and dispute process fail, you have a federal right to place a stop-payment order directly through your bank. Under Regulation E, you can halt any preauthorized electronic transfer by notifying your bank at least three business days before the next scheduled payment. You can give the order by phone, in person, or in writing.5eCFR. 12 CFR 1005.10 – Preauthorized Transfers

One catch: if you give the order verbally, your bank can require written confirmation within 14 days. If you don’t follow up in writing when asked, the oral order expires.5eCFR. 12 CFR 1005.10 – Preauthorized Transfers Banks also commonly charge a fee for stop-payment orders, typically between $10 and $40.6Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. A bank stop payment blocks the charge at the bank level but does nothing to resolve the billing agreement inside PayPal or your contract with the merchant. You may still need to cancel with both separately.
