To cancel Octopus Energy, you have two practical routes: if you’re switching to a different supplier, sign up with the new company and they handle everything with Octopus for you; if you’re moving out or closing the account yourself, use the move-out form in your online dashboard or email Octopus directly with your final meter reading and move-out date. Fees only come into play on US fixed-rate plans; UK customers pay no exit fees to leave.
What to Have Ready Before You Start
Three things save you time: your Octopus account number (on any bill or your online dashboard), a current meter reading, and the date you want the account to close or the switch to happen. If you’re moving, the name of whoever is taking over the property helps Octopus transfer the supply cleanly and stops you being billed for energy used after you’ve gone.1Octopus Energy. Smart meters usually send readings automatically, but Octopus often asks for a manual reading at closure to lock down the final bill. Submitting your own reading protects you from being billed on an estimate.2Octopus Energy. How Do I Read My Meter
Switching to Another Energy Supplier
If you’re leaving Octopus for a different provider, you don’t need to contact Octopus at all. You sign up with the new supplier and they coordinate the switch date and meter readings with Octopus for you.3Ofgem. New Compensation Rules for Delays When Switching Suppliers
In the UK, the switch should complete within five working days. If your new supplier takes longer, they owe you £30 in automatic compensation under rules that took effect in April 2024. The credit goes to your account or bank account without you having to chase it; if it doesn’t arrive, you can escalate through Ofgem’s complaints process.3Ofgem. New Compensation Rules for Delays When Switching Suppliers
One timing detail worth knowing for UK fixed-term contracts: within 49 days of your contract’s end date, no supplier can charge exit fees for switching, regardless of what the contract normally says.4Ofgem. Guide to the Customer Comms Rule Changes
Cancelling Because You’re Moving Out
If you’re leaving a property and not taking Octopus with you, tell them directly. The fastest way is the move-out form in the online dashboard, which collects your move-out date, closing meter readings, and forwarding address for the final bill.5Octopus Energy. What if Im Moving House or Have Just Moved In
You can also email the same details. UK customers write to hello@octopus.energy; US customers write to heretohelp@octopusenergy.com. Include your account number, move-out date, closing meter readings, and the new occupant’s name if you have it. US customers can also call 833-OCTO-888.6Octopus Energy. How Can I Contact You
Taking Octopus with you to a new address uses the same form. Provide the move-out and move-in dates and readings at both properties; Octopus closes the old account and opens a new one so you’re not paying for a property you’ve left.1Octopus Energy. Moving House Heres What You Need Know
Whichever channel you use, ask for a confirmation email or reference number. If there’s ever a dispute later about when you cancelled or what readings you gave, that confirmation is the record that matters.
Will You Pay an Exit Fee
The two markets work very differently.
UK
Octopus Energy does not charge exit fees to UK customers. Their own help page on cancellation fees focuses on what other suppliers may charge when you switch to Octopus, not on any fees of their own.7Octopus Energy. Will I Be Charged Cancellation Fees
US (Texas)
Octopus Energy’s US operation, which currently serves Texas, charges early termination fees on fixed-rate plans. For an Octo-12 plan signed on or after February 2025, the fee is $150. For an Octo-12 plan signed before that date, it’s $100. Month-to-month plans carry no early termination fee.8Octopus Energy. Do You Charge Early Termination Fees If your fixed contract is close to expiring, waiting for it to roll onto month-to-month before you cancel avoids the charge.
If You Just Signed Up and Want Out
In the UK, the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 give you a 14-day cooling-off period on energy contracts entered into online or over the phone. The window runs from the day you entered into the contract.9Legislation.gov.uk. The Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013
In the US, federal protection is narrower. The FTC’s Cooling-Off Rule gives three business days to cancel, but only for sales made at your home or somewhere other than the seller’s permanent place of business. Signing up on a website doesn’t qualify.10Federal Trade Commission. Cooling-off Period for Sales Made at Home or Other Locations So if a door-to-door representative signed you up, you have three business days; if you signed up online, check your contract for any cancellation window Octopus offers voluntarily.
Your Final Bill and Refund
Once your account closes, Octopus builds your final bill from the closing meter readings, which is why an accurate reading matters. UK industry rules require the final bill within six weeks; Octopus says most customers get theirs within four.11Octopus Energy. The Handover How We Work Out Your Opening Meter Readings When You Switch
If your account is in credit after the final charges, Octopus refunds the balance to your original payment method within two weeks of issuing the final bill. If you owe money, they collect through your existing Direct Debit or card on the next scheduled payment date.11Octopus Energy. The Handover How We Work Out Your Opening Meter Readings When You Switch
Watch your bank account for a few weeks after closing. Confirm the final payment or refund goes through, and check that no further recurring charges appear. Keep a copy of the final bill; if a disputed balance surfaces months later, that document is your first line of defense.
