To cancel NRG Energy, call the customer service number on your bill, have your account number and service address ready, and ask the representative to close the account effective on your chosen date. For NRG Home customers, the number is 1-844-460-0309, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern.1NRG Home. Contact Us Whether you’ll pay anything to cancel depends on your specific plan; many NRG Home plans carry no early termination fee, while some fixed-rate contracts do.
Reach the Right NRG Brand
NRG Energy is a parent company, and the brand on your bill decides which number you dial. NRG owns Reliant, Green Mountain Energy, Cirro Energy, Direct Energy, Discount Power, Stream Energy, and XOOM Energy, along with NRG Home. Each has its own customer service line and terms of service. Calling NRG Home’s number won’t help a Reliant customer.
Check the provider name at the top of your most recent invoice. NRG’s corporate site lists 1-855-500-8703 for NRG Home customers and 1-844-737-6742 for business customers.2NRG Energy. Contact Us For any other brand, use the number printed on the bill itself.
How to Cancel NRG Home Service
NRG Home takes cancellation requests by phone, email, or online form. The online contact form sits under Customer Care at picknrg.com; include the account holder’s name, service address, phone number, and the email tied to the account. For a paper trail, mail the request to NRG Home, P.O. Box 38781, Philadelphia, PA 19104.1NRG Home. Contact Us
Whichever method you use, get a confirmation number or save the acknowledgment email. That record is your protection if a billing question comes up later.
NRG doesn’t control the exact day service ends. Once you request cancellation, NRG notifies your local utility, and the utility schedules the switch, usually for the next meter reading. It can take one to two billing cycles before the account is fully closed.3NRG Home. Terms of Service for Residential Electricity Supply
What to Have Ready Before You Call
The representative will verify your identity and locate your account, so gather these details first:
- Account number, printed near the top of your bill.
- Service address, including any apartment or unit number. This may differ from your mailing address.
- The account holder’s name and contact information. NRG verifies identity to prevent unauthorized cancellations.
- Your desired end date. If you’re moving, use your move-out date. If you’re switching, your new provider’s start date sets the timeline.
- A forwarding address so NRG can send your final bill and any deposit refund.
Will You Owe an Early Termination Fee
Whether you pay anything depends on the plan you signed up for. The terms of service for several current NRG Home residential plans state plainly: no early termination fees, no other fees for cancellation.4NRG Home. Terms of Service for Residential Electricity Supply If you’re on one of those plans, you can cancel at any time without penalty.
Other NRG plans, particularly fixed-rate contracts through the company’s various brands, do carry early termination fees. Amounts can range from around $120 to several hundred dollars depending on the plan and the time remaining on the contract. The exact figure appears in your Electricity Facts Label and Terms of Service, both provided at enrollment. If you don’t have those documents, log into your online account or ask the agent to read you the cancellation terms before you commit to canceling.
Month-to-month and variable-rate plans rarely carry termination fees. If you’re on a fixed-rate plan close to its natural expiration, running out the last few weeks can be cheaper than paying the penalty.
Moving in Texas
Texas customers who relocate get a specific protection. Under Public Utility Commission of Texas rules, a retail electricity provider cannot charge an early termination fee when you move, as long as you provide a forwarding address and, if asked, reasonable evidence that you no longer live at the service address. The forwarding address you give for the final bill usually satisfies this.
If you’re moving within a deregulated area and want to keep NRG at the new home, you can often open a new account at the new address rather than transferring the old one. Ask about this on the cancellation call.
Switching Providers Instead of Closing the Account
If you’re leaving NRG for a competitor, you may not need to call NRG at all. In deregulated markets like Texas, your new provider submits a switch request and the local utility handles the transition, typically effective on the next meter reading.5Public Utility Commission of Texas. Chapter 25 Substantive Rules – Section 25.474 NRG doesn’t need to approve the move.
One caveat: if your NRG contract has an early termination fee and you switch before it expires, NRG can still charge that fee. Enrolling with a new provider doesn’t waive it. Check your NRG contract end date before signing anything new, and ask the incoming provider whether they can delay the start date to line up with your NRG expiration.
If You Just Signed Up and Changed Your Mind
NRG Home gives new customers three business days after receiving the Welcome Confirmation to rescind the contract entirely. Within that window, you can cancel without service starting and without owing anything. Contact NRG by phone or email before midnight on the third business day.4NRG Home. Terms of Service for Residential Electricity Supply
This rescission right is separate from canceling active service. Once you’ve been receiving electricity for weeks or months, that window is gone and the standard cancellation process applies.
Final Bill, Deposit, and Autopay
After cancellation takes effect, the utility performs a final meter reading and NRG issues a prorated bill covering the period since your last invoice. Because the utility controls the meter read, the final bill may not arrive immediately; one to two billing cycles is normal.3NRG Home. Terms of Service for Residential Electricity Supply
Give NRG a forwarding address. If the final invoice never reaches you, an unpaid balance can end up in collections, and that mark can sit on your credit report for up to seven years.
If you paid a security deposit at enrollment, NRG will refund it after applying it against any outstanding balance.6NRG Energy. Terms of Service Turn off autopay yourself once the final balance clears, or confirm with the agent that it will stop automatically. Some customers have had autopay pull an extra payment after account closure, and reclaiming that money is a slow process.
If NRG Keeps Billing You
If billing continues after cancellation, or if you’re disputing a termination fee you believe you don’t owe, call customer service and ask for a supervisor. Keep a log of every call: date, agent name, and any reference number you receive. If the issue isn’t resolved, file a complaint with your state’s utility regulator. In Texas, that’s the Public Utility Commission of Texas; in other states, it’s the public service commission or utilities board. These agencies investigate billing disputes and can order providers to correct errors.
