To cancel your National Trust membership, call the Supporter Services Centre on 0344 800 1895 or email enquiries@nationaltrust.org.uk at any time. The catch worth knowing before you pick up the phone: the National Trust treats membership fees as charitable donations and will not refund the unused portion of your year. The only exception is a 14-day cooling-off period if you joined online or by phone.1National Trust. National Trust Membership FAQs
The Refund Rule Before You Cancel
The organisation’s policy is blunt: memberships are non-refundable regardless of whether you paid by card, cash, or Direct Debit.1National Trust. National Trust Membership FAQs You can cancel whenever you like, but no money comes back for months you have not yet used.
If you pay monthly by Direct Debit, you also agreed to a full year of 12 instalments when you signed up, and the National Trust expects you to keep paying until the end of that membership year.2National Trust. Paying for Your Membership With Direct Debit The practical way out without a dispute is to keep using your benefits until the renewal date and simply not renew.
When You Can Get a Full Refund: The 14-Day Window
If you joined online, over the phone, or through any other distance sale, the Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013 give you 14 days to cancel without giving a reason. For a service contract like a membership, the 14 days start the day after the contract was entered into.3Legislation.gov.uk. The Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013 – Regulation 29 This statutory right overrides the National Trust’s own non-refund policy, and you should receive back whatever you paid.
One boundary: if you signed up in person at a property rather than online or by phone, the distance-selling regulations may not apply, and the standard non-refund policy would stand.

Cancelling the Direct Debit Is a Separate Step
Telling the National Trust you want to cancel and cancelling the Direct Debit at your bank are two different actions, and you need to do both. Confirmation from the National Trust ends the membership contract on their side; the bank cancellation stops money leaving your account.
You can cancel a Direct Debit at any time through online banking, your mobile app, or by contacting your bank directly. Do it at least a full day before the next collection, because once a payment is in flight it may be too late to stop.6Direct Debit. Cancelling a Direct Debit If you are unsure, ask your bank how much notice they need.
One important warning: cancelling the Direct Debit at your bank does not cancel the contract with the National Trust. If you simply stop payments without telling them, you may still technically owe the remaining instalments for the year, and the Trust can write to you asking for payment by other means.2National Trust. Paying for Your Membership With Direct Debit Confirm the cancellation with the National Trust first, then cancel the Direct Debit.
If a payment is collected in error after you have cancelled, the Direct Debit Guarantee entitles you to a full and immediate refund from your bank.7Direct Debit. Direct Debit Guarantee Contact your bank as soon as you spot the charge.
If You Paid the Whole Year by Card
When the full annual fee was paid in one go by credit or debit card, there is no recurring payment to stop at your bank. The cancellation is handled entirely through the Supporter Services Centre. The same non-refund policy applies outside the 14-day cooling-off window.1National Trust. National Trust Membership FAQs Your benefits run until the expiry date on your card, and the membership lapses when you do not renew.
Cancelling After a Member’s Death
The National Trust does not publish a specific bereavement policy, so the standard process applies. Contact the Supporter Services Centre on 0344 800 1895 or at enquiries@nationaltrust.org.uk with the deceased member’s name, address, and supporter number.4National Trust. Contact the National Trust Because memberships are classified as non-refundable donations, do not expect a pro-rata refund. If they were paying monthly by Direct Debit, cancel the mandate at the bank as well to prevent further collections from the estate’s account.
