To cancel Monzo, open the app, tap your profile icon, go into settings, and tap Close account. It takes about two minutes once your balance is at zero. The work sits in the preparation: moving your money out, emptying any Pots, redirecting direct debits, and downloading your statements before you lose app access. Here is how to cancel a Monzo account cleanly, plus what changes if you’re on a paid plan, hold a joint account, or bank with Monzo in the US.
Get the Account Ready to Close
Empty Your Balance and Pots
Monzo won’t let you close the account until the balance is exactly zero, and that includes any money sitting in Pots.1Monzo. The money moves back into your main balance automatically.2Monzo. Closing Pots A savings Pot that earns interest may take until the next working day to pay out, and accrued interest usually lands on the second working day of the following month.
If you’re overdrawn, bring the account back to zero first. Monzo will put any Pot money toward the overdraft, but you still owe whatever is left.3Monzo. What Happens After an Account Is Closed An unpaid balance can be passed to a debt collection agency and show up on your credit file, so don’t try to walk away from it by closing.
Move Your Direct Debits, Standing Orders, and Salary
Recurring payments tied to Monzo will fail once the account is gone. Contact each company (energy, broadband, insurance, subscriptions) and give them your new account details. Cancelling a direct debit in the Monzo app only stops future collections; it doesn’t tell the company you owe money, so you can still be charged missed payment fees.4Monzo. Download Your Statements
You lose access to the app and your transaction history once the account closes, so pull your records first. In the app, tap Home, then the three dots underneath your card, then Bank statements. A couple of years back is better if you might need the records for self-assessment, a mortgage application, or sorting out a payment dispute later.
Cancel Monzo Plus or Premium Before You Close
If you’re on a paid plan, cancel it first. Open the Plus tab, tap settings at the bottom, and the cancellation option is there.6Monzo. Cancelling Monzo Plus Whether you pay a fee depends on when you cancel:
- Inside the 14-day cooling-off period: no fee, unless you ordered a holographic card, which carries a £5 card charge.
- After 14 days but inside the 3-month minimum term: £5 cancellation fee.
- After the 3-month minimum term: no fee.
Monzo refunds the remaining days in the month you cancel.7Monzo. Monzo Plus Fees One thing to know before you cancel: Monzo has removed Plus and Premium from sale, so if you cancel you can’t re-subscribe later, even if you keep the current account open.
Close the Account in the App
With the balance at zero, Pots emptied, and payments redirected, the closure itself takes four taps:1Monzo. Monzo Help – Closing Your Account
- Tap your profile icon at the top of the home screen. If you don’t see it, swipe down on your card.
- Tap the settings cog.
- Tap Close account.
- Follow the prompts and confirm.
You may be asked to verify with your PIN, fingerprint, or face recognition before it finalises. Monzo sends a confirmation email once the closure goes through, and the app logs you out.8Monzo. How to Close Your Account
Switching to Another UK Bank? Use CASS Instead
If you’re moving to another UK bank, you may not need to close Monzo yourself. The Current Account Switch Service (CASS) transfers your direct debits, standing orders, and salary to the new bank and closes your Monzo account automatically. You start the switch from your new bank, not from Monzo.9Monzo. How a Full Switch Works
One condition: the switch won’t go through if you still have open savings Pots or investment accounts. Close those and move the money into your main balance first.9Monzo. How a Full Switch Works Most major UK banks support CASS, and it handles the admin of chasing payment details that would otherwise fall on you.
Closing a Joint Account
Either holder can close a Monzo joint account on their own. Withdraw all the money, then close it in the app.10Monzo. Closing a Joint Account The closure takes effect for both of you regardless of who initiates it, so agree on how you’re splitting the balance before anyone taps through.
After the Account Closes
Your Credit Score
Closing a current account doesn’t directly affect your credit score. The indirect risk is loose ends: an unpaid overdraft, or credit card and loan payments that bounce because you forgot to redirect them. A clean closure with a zero balance and payments moved elsewhere leaves nothing to worry about.
Changing Your Mind
If you want to come back, you’ll need to wait at least 30 days after closure before Monzo will consider reopening the account, and there’s no guarantee they will. Email help@monzo.com to start the process.11Monzo. Reopening Your Account For practical purposes, treat closure as a one-way door.
How Long Monzo Keeps Your Data
Your data isn’t deleted the moment the account closes. Under the UK’s Money Laundering Regulations 2017, banks must keep customer records for at least five years after the business relationship ends.12Legislation.gov.uk. The Money Laundering, Terrorist Financing and Transfer of Funds (Information on the Payer) Regulations 2017 – Regulation 40 You can request deletion of your personal data under GDPR by emailing help@monzo.com, but Monzo will keep whatever anti-money laundering law requires it to keep.
Dispose of Your Card
Your physical debit card stops working after closure, but it still carries your name and card number. Cut through the chip and the magnetic strip before throwing it out, and bin the pieces separately if you want to be thorough.
Virtual cards are deactivated when the account closes. To clean them up beforehand, tap the virtual card, scroll down, and tap Delete.13Monzo. If You Bank With Monzo in the US
Monzo US customers don’t need to close manually. Monzo is leaving the US market: cards were deactivated on May 15, 2026, and accounts will permanently close on June 8, 2026.14Monzo. Move your money out before June 8 or it becomes much harder to recover.
