You can cancel the JG Wentworth debt relief program at any time, with no penalty, and the company must return whatever is left in your dedicated savings account within seven business days of your request. To cancel JG Wentworth debt relief, call the company to withdraw in writing, separately tell your bank to stop the automatic drafts, and watch the final accounting to make sure the only fees deducted are on debts that were actually settled. The harder part comes after: any debt that was still in negotiation remains fully owed, usually with months of missed payments stacked on top.
Make the Cancellation Request
Call JG Wentworth’s main support line at 1-800-944-4666 and tell the representative you want to withdraw from your debt relief agreement. Have your program ID number, enrollment date, and the list of enrolled debts in front of you. Write down the representative’s name, the date and time of the call, and any confirmation number they give you.
Ask whether a written cancellation is also required. If it is, get the exact email or mailing address and send the notice by certified mail with return receipt requested. If there is a client portal, submit through it as well and screenshot the confirmation. Keep every piece of this in one folder; it becomes your evidence if the company later says it never received your request.
Before you hang up, ask the representative to confirm three things in writing: the effective date of your cancellation, the current balance in your dedicated account, and which of your enrolled debts (if any) were settled while you were in the program. That last point controls what the company is allowed to keep.
Your right to walk away is not negotiable. Under the Telemarketing Sales Rule, a debt relief company must let you withdraw at any time without penalty and return the funds in your dedicated account, minus fees legitimately earned on debts that were actually settled, within seven business days.1eCFR. 16 CFR 310.4 – Abusive Telemarketing Acts or Practices JG Wentworth’s own program disclosure says the same thing.2JG Wentworth. ACDR Program Disclosure Statement There is no 30-day waiting period and no advance-notice requirement baked into federal law. If you are told otherwise, the regulation is the answer.
Stop the Automatic Drafts From Your Bank
Do not wait for JG Wentworth to process the cancellation before you shut off the automatic monthly drafts. Your right to stop a preauthorized electronic transfer is separate from the cancellation itself.
Under Regulation E, you can stop a scheduled automatic payment by notifying your bank at least three business days before the next transfer date.3eCFR. 12 CFR 1005.10 – Preauthorized Transfers You can do this by phone, in person, or in writing. If you call it in, the bank may ask for a written confirmation within 14 days, and the oral order lapses if you don’t send it.
Tell the bank you are also revoking authorization for JG Wentworth or its payment processor to debit your account at all. That revocation covers every future transfer, not just the next one.4Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. How Can I Stop Automatic Payments From My Account If a draft hits your account after you have revoked that authorization, dispute it with the bank. Your bank must investigate unauthorized transfers reported within 60 days of the statement that shows the charge.5Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. 12 CFR 1005.11 – Procedures for Resolving Errors
Getting Your Dedicated Account Balance Back
The money in your JG Wentworth-related savings account belongs to you. The account sits at an independent, insured bank, and the Telemarketing Sales Rule requires that administrator to be separate from the debt relief company. JG Wentworth cannot touch the funds except to collect fees it has already earned on completed settlements.1eCFR. 16 CFR 310.4 – Abusive Telemarketing Acts or Practices
Once you cancel, the remaining balance should land back with you within seven business days. Read the final accounting line by line. The only legitimate deduction is the percentage-based fee on debts that were actually settled with your agreement. JG Wentworth’s program fee ranges from 18% to 25% of each enrolled debt amount, and it only applies when the company successfully negotiated a settlement you accepted.6JG Wentworth. JG Wentworth Debt Relief Program
If you see deductions for debts still in negotiation, or vague administrative charges that aren’t tied to a completed settlement, push back. The rule prohibits a debt relief company from collecting fees before it has renegotiated or settled at least one of your debts and you have made at least one payment under that settlement.7eCFR. 16 CFR 310.4 – Abusive Telemarketing Acts or Practices Money taken for debts the company never actually settled is money owed back to you.
What Happens to the Debts That Were Never Settled
Any debt JG Wentworth hadn’t yet resolved stays fully yours, and the balance has almost certainly grown. Debt settlement programs instruct you to stop paying creditors during negotiations, so months of missed payments, late fees, and interest have been building on your original balances. Those charges don’t vanish because you canceled.
Creditors who were waiting for settlement offers may now escalate. Some accounts may already have been charged off and sold to collection agencies, which tend to come harder. Lawsuits are a realistic risk on larger balances. JG Wentworth’s own disclosure warns that program participants may be “subject to collections or being sued by creditors or debt collectors.”6JG Wentworth. JG Wentworth Debt Relief Program
Reach out to each creditor or collection agency directly once you cancel. Many will accept a payment plan or hardship arrangement, especially on debts that have been delinquent for a while, because partial payment beats nothing. If a debt collector contacts you, federal law lets you restrict how and when they communicate with you, and they must respect those limits.8Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. 12 CFR 1006.6 – Communications in Connection With Debt Collection
Credit and Tax Fallout
Your Credit Score
If you have been in the program for any real length of time, your credit has already absorbed most of the damage. Missed payments are the single most damaging factor in credit scoring, and each one stays on your reports for seven years from the date it occurred. Canceling doesn’t erase that, but it stops the bleeding. The faster you get payments flowing to creditors again, the sooner recovery starts.
Any debts that were settled during the program will show as “settled for less than owed,” which is better than an ongoing delinquency and worse than “paid in full.” That mark also stays on the file for seven years.
Taxes on Forgiven Debt
If JG Wentworth negotiated any settlement for less than the full balance, the forgiven portion may count as taxable income. Creditors are required to file a Form 1099-C with the IRS when they cancel $600 or more of debt.9Internal Revenue Service. About Form 1099-C, Cancellation of Debt A $10,000 debt settled for $4,000 can mean $6,000 reported as income.
There is an escape hatch. If your total liabilities exceeded the fair market value of your total assets at the time the debt was canceled, you were insolvent and can exclude the forgiven amount from income up to the extent of that insolvency.10Internal Revenue Service. What if I Am Insolvent? You claim the exclusion by filing IRS Form 982 with your tax return. If your assets were worth $7,000 and your liabilities totaled $10,000, you were insolvent by $3,000 and could exclude up to $3,000 of canceled debt.11Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 982 Many people leaving a settlement program qualify, but the numbers have to be run carefully.
If JG Wentworth Won’t Cooperate
If the company delays the cancellation, keeps charging fees, or doesn’t return your funds within seven business days, several channels can push things along.
- File a complaint with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau at consumerfinance.gov/complaint or by phone at (855) 411-2372, under the “Debt and credit management” category. The CFPB forwards the complaint to the company and requires a response.12Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Submit a Complaint
- Report the company to the Federal Trade Commission at ftc.gov/complaint. The FTC enforces the Telemarketing Sales Rule, and civil penalties for violations can exceed $53,000 per offense.13Federal Trade Commission. FTC Publishes Inflation-Adjusted Civil Penalty Amounts for 2025
- Contact your state attorney general’s consumer protection division. Many states layer their own licensing and bonding rules on top of federal law.
- Dispute any post-cancellation drafts with your bank as unauthorized transfers. Report them within 60 days of the statement that shows the charge to preserve your full rights under the Electronic Fund Transfer Act.14Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. 12 CFR 1005.6 – Liability of Consumer for Unauthorized Transfers
Companies tend to move faster once a regulator is in the loop. Save every call log, email, portal screenshot, certified mail receipt, and bank statement from the moment you decide to cancel.
Handling the Remaining Debt Yourself
Leaving the program doesn’t leave you without options. The right path depends on how much you owe, whether you can offer any lump sums, and how far behind you are.
- Negotiate directly with your creditors. You can do what a settlement company does without paying 18% to 25% in fees. Creditors often accept lump-sum offers in the 30% to 50% range on seriously delinquent accounts. Call the hardship or loss-mitigation department, make a specific dollar offer, and get the agreement in writing before you send any money.
- Work with a nonprofit credit counselor. Agencies affiliated with the National Foundation for Credit Counseling can set up a debt management plan: a counselor negotiates lower interest rates with your creditors and consolidates payments into one monthly amount. Accounts stay current, which protects your credit score, and fees are modest compared to for-profit settlement.
- Consider bankruptcy if the debt is truly unmanageable. Chapter 7 can discharge most unsecured debt. Eligibility depends on a means test comparing your income to the median income for your state and household size. Bankruptcy carries real credit consequences, but for someone already deep in a settlement program the marginal hit may be smaller than expected, because the missed payments are already on the record.15U.S. Trustee Program.
