If you enrolled recently, you may still be inside a rescission window. Review Your Contract Before You Call
Five minutes with your paperwork can save real money. Pull your latest energy bill and note your IGS account number and service address exactly as they appear. Small mismatches on an apartment number or address format can stall the verification step.
Then open your Terms and Conditions or Contract Summary and find three things:
- Your contract end date. If the initial fixed-rate term has already ended and you’ve rolled into month-to-month service, early termination fees generally don’t apply.
- The early termination fee, listed in the Term Box. Some IGS products carry no fee; others charge up to $199, depending on the plan and length of commitment.2IGS Energy. Terms and Conditions
- Notice requirements. Some contracts require cancellation notice at least 15 days before your next scheduled meter reading, or the cancellation slips to the following billing cycle.3New York State Department of Public Service. My Natural Gas Supply Contract With IGS Energy
Do the math before you call. If your contract is nearly over, compare the termination fee against what you’d pay staying on the plan for the last month or two. Riding out the remainder sometimes costs less than paying to leave.
Making the Cancellation Call
Call 877-995-4447 and tell the representative you want to cancel your supply agreement.1IGS Energy. Contact Us Expect a retention pitch, often a lower rate or a different plan. A firm “no thank you” moves the call along.
Before you hang up, write down:
- The confirmation number. This is your proof the cancellation was requested, and it’s the single most useful thing to have if a billing dispute comes up later.
- The representative’s name, along with the date and time of the call.
- The effective date. The rep should give you an approximate switch date based on your utility’s meter-reading schedule.
IGS also accepts cancellations by email at customersupport@igsenergy.com and through the contact form on their website. Phone tends to be faster because the representative can verify your account and submit the request while you’re on the line.
What Happens After You Cancel
Your local utility, not IGS, controls when the switch actually takes effect, and it almost always lines up with your next scheduled meter reading. Cancel right after a meter read and you could wait a full billing cycle. Cancel a few days before the next one and the change might land within a week or two.
Nothing happens to your service. The utility has been physically delivering your electricity or gas the whole time; canceling only changes who supplies it. IGS’s rates and terms stay in effect until the meter is read and the transition officially occurs, so keep an eye on both your IGS account and your utility account for status updates. Once the switch completes, the third-party supplier line disappears from your bill and you’re back on the utility’s default service rate automatically. No new application, no deposit.
Your Final Bill
The final IGS charges appear on your regular utility statement and are prorated to the actual transfer date, so you pay only for the days IGS supplied you. If you terminated early, the termination fee shows up as a separate line item on that same statement. Your last bill will likely be higher than a normal month. Check the fee against what your contract specified and confirm the numbers match.
One situation catches people off guard. If you were on a budget billing or levelized payment plan, the utility runs a true-up when you cancel. Budget billing spreads annual costs into equal monthly payments, so you’ve been overpaying in low-usage months and underpaying in high-usage months. Cancel in winter after a heavy heating season and the reconciliation charge can be substantial. If you’ve overpaid on the year, you’ll get a credit instead.
Avoiding an Automatic Renewal
If you’re not canceling today but want a clean exit at the end of your term, put the renewal notices on your calendar. IGS sends two: the first arrives 45 to 60 days before expiration, and the second no less than 30 days before.5IGS Energy. Terms and Conditions Ignore them and the agreement rolls into a month-to-month variable rate plan.
That variable rate is where customers get burned quietly. It can run well above the fixed rate you were paying, and because the change is automatic, it can take several billing cycles before anyone notices. Treat the first renewal notice as your cue to negotiate a new fixed rate, shop another supplier, or cancel back to your utility’s default service. Canceling during the month-to-month phase typically carries no early termination fee, because the fixed-rate term has already ended.
If Your Cancellation Isn’t Processed
Most cancellations go through without trouble. Occasionally one falls through — IGS charges keep appearing on your bill weeks after your call, or the company says it has no record of the request. This is when the confirmation number pays for itself.
Call IGS again and reference the confirmation number, the date of your original call, and the representative’s name. If the company still won’t fix it, escalate to your state’s public utility commission. Every deregulated state has a regulator that oversees retail energy suppliers and accepts consumer complaints, usually through an online form. You’ll need your account number, service address, a description of the problem, and documentation of your cancellation attempts.
Commissions take these complaints seriously because retail suppliers operate under licenses the commission can revoke. A formal complaint typically produces a company response within a few weeks. If you paid charges after your cancellation should have taken effect, say so in the complaint; the commission can order refunds in some cases.
