How to Cancel ICICI Credit Card: Net Banking, Phone, or Letter

To cancel an ICICI credit card, clear every rupee owed on the account, then submit a closure request through ICICI Net Banking, by calling customer care at 1800 1080, or by sending a written letter. Once your dues are zero, the Reserve Bank of India requires ICICI to complete the closure within seven working days. Miss that deadline, and the bank owes you ₹500 for every additional day.1Reserve Bank of India. Master Direction – Credit Card and Debit Card – Issuance and Conduct Directions, 2022

Settle Everything on the Card First

The account must show a zero balance before you file the request. That includes the current statement and any unbilled transactions still working their way through the system. If you have active EMI conversions running on the card, those don’t close automatically. Call 1800 1080 and foreclose them separately. A foreclosure fee of up to 3% of the outstanding principal applies, plus GST.2ICICI Bank. Redeem your reward points before you cancel. Unused points are forfeited once the account closes. Then go through your last two or three statements and pull out every recurring charge — streaming subscriptions, insurance premiums, utility auto-debits — and move each one to a different card or bank mandate. A forgotten auto-debit landing on a card you thought was closed is the single most common source of nasty surprises after cancellation.

Keep your 16-digit card number and registered mobile number in front of you. Every channel verifies identity before accepting the request.

Cancel Through Net Banking

Net Banking is the fastest route and gives you an instant paper trail. Log in with your credentials, open the Cards menu and select Credit Cards, click “View All” under Manage your Credit Card, choose “Cancel my Credit Card” for the card you want to close, and submit.3ICICI Bank. The system issues a service request number the moment you confirm. Save it. That number, along with the date, is what proves when you filed the request if the seven-day clock ever matters.

Cancel by Phone

Call 1800 1080 from within India, toll-free, or +91-22-33667777 from abroad.4ICICI Bank. ICICI Bank Customer Care The representative will run identity checks and then process the closure. Ask for the service request number before you end the call, and note the exact date and time.

The RBI directions require banks to accept closure requests through helplines, email, IVR, the website, internet banking, or mobile apps. A bank cannot insist you send a physical letter or visit a branch as the only way to cancel.1Reserve Bank of India. Master Direction – Credit Card and Debit Card – Issuance and Conduct Directions, 2022 If a representative tells you otherwise, cite the rule and escalate.

Cancel by Written Letter

A written letter still works if you want a physical paper trail. Address it to ICICI Bank’s corporate office and include your full name, card number, registered mobile number, and a clear instruction to permanently close the account. Send it by registered post or speed post so you have proof of dispatch and delivery. The seven-day closure clock starts only when the bank receives your letter, so this route is slower than the other two.

A Note on the iMobile Pay App

The iMobile Pay app has a card management section under “Cards and Forex,” but its option is labeled “Block Card” with a “Permanent” block type rather than a cancellation button. A permanent block stops future transactions, but it may not trigger the formal closure process that updates your records with the credit bureaus. If you use the app to block the card, follow up with Net Banking or customer care to submit the actual closure request.

The Seven-Day Rule and the ₹500 Daily Penalty

Once you’ve filed the request and your card carries no outstanding balance, ICICI has seven working days to complete the closure. The bank must confirm closure to you by SMS or email as soon as it’s done.1Reserve Bank of India. Master Direction – Credit Card and Debit Card – Issuance and Conduct Directions, 2022

If the bank goes past seven working days, it owes you ₹500 for each day of delay until the account is finally closed. The penalty applies only when the account has no dues, which is why zeroing out the balance beforehand isn’t just tidy housekeeping — it’s what activates your right to compensation. The service request number and the filing date are the two pieces of evidence you’d need to claim it.

If any credit balance remains on the card after closure, from an overpayment or a late-posting refund, the bank is required to transfer that amount to your bank account.1Reserve Bank of India. Master Direction – Credit Card and Debit Card – Issuance and Conduct Directions, 2022

Ask for a No-Dues Certificate

After the account is officially closed, request a No Objection Certificate or No Dues Certificate from ICICI. It confirms you owe nothing on the account and settles any billing dispute that surfaces later. ICICI typically issues it within nine working days of the request and sends it to your registered email or mobile.5ICICI Bank. Keep the PDF; it’s the one document that conclusively answers any future “you still owe us” letter generated by systems that didn’t sync.

What Cancellation Does to Your Credit Score

Closing a credit card can pull your CIBIL score down for two reasons. Your total available credit shrinks, so if you carry balances on other cards, your utilization ratio jumps, and utilization is one of the heaviest inputs to the score. And if the card you’re closing is your oldest, the average age of your credit history shortens.

If you have a choice between closing your newest card and your oldest, close the newer one. If you’re planning a home loan or car loan application in the next few months, wait until after that loan is sanctioned before cancelling. The dip is temporary, but it is real.

The RBI requires ICICI to report the closure to the credit information companies within 30 days.1Reserve Bank of India. Master Direction – Credit Card and Debit Card – Issuance and Conduct Directions, 2022 Pull your CIBIL report a month or two later and confirm the account shows as “Closed” and not still active or, worse, “Written Off.” An incorrect status can damage your creditworthiness for years if it isn’t caught.

Destroy the Card

Once you have the closure confirmation and the no-dues certificate, cut the card into several pieces, slicing through the chip, the magnetic strip, and the printed card number. Any add-on or supplementary cards linked to the primary account go non-functional at closure, so destroy those too. Cancellation is permanent; ICICI will not reactivate a closed card, and if you change your mind you’ll have to apply for a new one.3ICICI Bank. Request for Cancellation of Credit Card
