To cancel HBO Max on Google Play, open the Play Store, go to Payments & subscriptions, tap Subscriptions, select Max, and tap Cancel subscription. You have to do it through Google rather than through the Max app or website because Google is your billing provider when you subscribed that way. The whole thing takes about two minutes on a phone or a computer.
Why the Max App Can’t Cancel It
When you signed up for Max through the Google Play Store, Google took over the billing. Max doesn’t have your payment details and can’t stop the recurring charge. Trying to cancel inside the Max app or on the Max website will either dead-end or send you back to Google Play. Max’s own help page says the same thing: if Google bills you, you cancel through Google.
Uninstalling the App Doesn’t Cancel Anything
Deleting Max from your phone does not stop the monthly charge. Google’s help pages state this directly, and it’s the most expensive mistake people make with Play Store subscriptions. The app disappears, the billing does not. The only thing that stops the charge is going into your Google subscription list and canceling.
Canceling on an Android Phone or Tablet
Open the Google Play Store app. Tap your profile icon in the upper right, then Payments & subscriptions, then Subscriptions. You’ll see every active subscription tied to that Google account.
Find Max, tap it, and you’ll see your plan and your next billing date. Tap Cancel subscription and follow the prompts. Google may ask why you’re leaving before it finalizes the cancellation.
Canceling From a Computer
If your Android device isn’t nearby, any web browser works. Go to play.google.com/store/account/subscriptions and sign in with the Google account you used to subscribe. Click Manage next to Max, then Cancel subscription. The page shows the same billing details as the mobile flow, and it’s a good moment to save a screenshot of the confirmation for your records.
What Happens After You Cancel
You don’t lose access right away. You keep watching Max through the end of the billing period you already paid for. Cancel on March 2 with a March 15 renewal date, and you have Max until March 15. Google emails a confirmation once the cancellation processes, and that email is your proof that the recurring charge has been stopped.
Free trials work differently. If you cancel during a trial, you may lose access immediately because you haven’t paid for any viewing time yet. To avoid the next charge without giving up the trial, cancel near the end of the trial period, but not so close that a technical hiccup could cost you.
If Max Isn’t Showing Up in Your Subscriptions
The usual reason is that you’re signed into the wrong Google account. If you have more than one Gmail address, the subscription lives on whichever account originally bought it. In the Play Store, tap your profile icon and use the dropdown arrow next to your email to switch accounts, then check the subscriptions page on each one.
If nothing turns up, search your email for the original Google Play purchase receipt. It will name the account that’s being billed. Your bank or card statement is another check: if the charge reads “Max” or “HBO Max” rather than “Google Play,” you subscribed directly through Max instead of through Google, and you need to cancel on the Max website.
Requesting a Refund if You Were Charged Anyway
If a charge went through after you thought you’d canceled, or a household member renewed by accident, you can ask Google Play for a refund. Timing matters. Requests made within 48 hours of the charge have the best chance of approval. After 48 hours, Google generally sends you to the app developer, which for this service means Max’s support team.
