How to Cancel Freedom Life Insurance: By Phone, Mail, or Portal

To cancel a Freedom Life Insurance Company of America policy, call customer service at 1-800-387-9027 or mail a signed cancellation letter to the company’s Fort Worth office. Freedom Life, a subsidiary of USHEALTH Group, accepts both verbal and written requests, but the request itself is only part of the job: you also need to stop any automatic payments, cancel the association membership that was bundled with the policy, and confirm the termination in writing.

Gather These Items First

Having a few things in front of you keeps the call short and prevents processing delays:

  • Your policy number, which appears on the insurance ID card or policy schedule.
  • The primary policyholder’s Social Security number, used for identity verification.
  • The termination date you want. Choosing a date that aligns with the end of your billing cycle helps you avoid partial-period charges.
  • Your original policy documents, so you can confirm the exact plan name, type, and any riders.

Submit the Cancellation Request

By Phone

Call 1-800-387-9027. You can speak with a representative or leave a recorded message requesting cancellation. The USHEALTH Group member portal may let you upload a signed cancellation form or manage coverage settings directly. Save or screenshot any confirmation number it generates. Not every plan supports full online cancellation, so if the option isn’t there, fall back to phone or mail.

Stop the Automatic Payments Separately

Submitting a cancellation request does not automatically stop recurring charges. Until Freedom Life processes the cancellation, drafts can continue hitting your bank account or credit card. Three steps protect you:

  • Tell Freedom Life in writing that you are revoking authorization for future automatic debits. Keep a copy.
  • Place a stop-payment order with your bank. Federal law lets you stop automatic payments from your account even if you have not yet revoked authorization with the company. Give the order at least three business days before the next scheduled payment.3Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. You Have Protections When It Comes to Automatic Debit Payments From Your Account
  • If you give the stop-payment order by phone, your bank may require written confirmation within 14 days. Send it promptly so the order stays in effect.4HelpWithMyBank.gov. How Can I Stop a Preauthorized Debit?

Watch your bank statements for at least two billing cycles after cancellation.

Cancel the Association Membership Too

Many Freedom Life plans are issued through a professional or trade association, such as the American Independent Business Coalition or the Southern Consumers Alliance. When you enrolled, you likely became a dues-paying member, and the insurer collects those dues alongside your premium.5USHEALTH Group. Pearl Level Membership Overview

Under several USHEALTH Group plan brochures, coverage ends when the primary insured terminates their association membership.6USHEALTH Group. PremierChoice Insurance Brochure Canceling the insurance policy and canceling the membership can be two separate steps. When you call or write, ask the representative to confirm the association membership is also being terminated. If dues are billed separately, follow up with the association directly.

Use the Free Look Period If You Can

If you recently purchased the policy, you may still be inside the free look period, a window after your policy documents arrive during which you can cancel for any reason and get a full refund of premiums paid. For life insurance, most states set this window at 10 days, though some states allow longer for certain policy types.7National Association of Insurance Commissioners. Life Insurance Disclosure Provisions

The clock typically starts on the date you received the policy documents, not the date you applied. Check the deadline printed in your contract. If you’re close to it, call Freedom Life immediately and follow up with a certified letter the same day. Once the window closes, the insurer is not required to refund your initial premium or any setup fees.

Tax Consequences If Your Policy Has Cash Value

Canceling a whole life or universal life policy that has built up cash value can create a taxable event. Under federal tax law, the portion of the surrender proceeds that exceeds your “investment in the contract” (roughly the total premiums you paid) is treated as taxable income.8Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 U.S. Code 72 – Annuities; Certain Proceeds of Endowment and Life Insurance Contracts

If you paid $30,000 in premiums over the life of the policy and the cash surrender value is $38,000, the $8,000 gain is taxed as ordinary income in the year you receive it. The insurer must file a Form 1099-R reporting the distribution if any portion is includible in your income.9Internal Revenue Service. 2025 Instructions for Forms 1099-R and 5498 Keep that form for your tax return.

Term life policies and supplemental health plans generally have no cash value, so canceling them does not trigger a tax bill. If you’re unsure which type you hold, check your policy documents or ask Freedom Life before you cancel.

Line Up New Health Coverage Before You Cancel

If you’re canceling a Freedom Life health plan, pay attention to timing. Voluntarily dropping coverage generally does not qualify you for a Special Enrollment Period on the Health Insurance Marketplace. A Special Enrollment Period is triggered by an involuntary loss of qualifying coverage, such as a plan being discontinued or losing eligibility because you moved out of the service area.10HealthCare.gov. Getting Health Coverage Outside Open Enrollment

Canceling outside open enrollment without another qualifying life event can leave you uninsured until the next open enrollment begins. Secure replacement coverage first, then line up its start date with the end date of your Freedom Life plan.

Don’t Just Stop Paying

Letting the policy lapse by nonpayment is not a shortcut. A lapsed life policy may remain technically active during a grace period (often 30 days), during which you still owe premiums. If you die during that window, the insurer may deduct the unpaid premium from any death benefit. For health plans, a lapse can leave a coverage gap that is harder to explain to future insurers than a clean cancellation.

A formal cancellation gives you a confirmed termination date, a written record, and a cleaner path to any refund you’re owed.

After Freedom Life Processes the Cancellation

You should receive a formal notice of termination by mail or email. It confirms the effective date of cancellation and acts as proof of prior coverage, which future insurers may request. Check that the termination date matches what you asked for. If it doesn’t, contact Freedom Life right away so you aren’t billed for additional months.

Refunds for unearned premiums are typically processed within 30 days of the official termination date. If you paid in advance, the company calculates the remaining balance based on days of unused coverage. Refunds usually go back through the same payment method you used; if that method is no longer active, a check is mailed to the address on file.

Keep copies of all cancellation correspondence, confirmation numbers, and the termination notice for at least a year. These records protect you in a billing dispute and let you prove prior coverage dates when applying for new insurance.
