To cancel FirstNet, call FirstNet Customer Care at 800-574-7000 or visit any AT&T retail store.1First Responder Network Authority. Contact The call itself is straightforward. What makes FirstNet cancellations different from a typical wireless shutoff is the money attached: any remaining device installment balance comes due immediately, promotional credits stop, and depending on your contract you may owe an early termination fee. If your line is paid for by your agency rather than by you, you probably can’t close it on your own at all.
First, Check Who Owns the Line
FirstNet lines fall into two categories, and it matters which one you have. If you pay AT&T directly, you can cancel yourself using the steps below. If your department or agency pays the bill under a master agreement, the line belongs to them. An authorized representative at your agency, usually a telecom manager or IT administrator, has to release the line before AT&T will act on it. Calling customer care yourself won’t move that process forward.
One other option worth knowing about before you cancel: if you’re leaving a first responder role but want to keep your phone number and device, you can migrate the line to a standard AT&T consumer account instead of closing it. Migration drops FirstNet-specific benefits like network priority and preemption, but it avoids the installment payoff and any early termination charge that a full cancellation would trigger.2FirstNet. Subscriber Paid Offboarding Program Brief You start a migration through the same 800-574-7000 number or at an AT&T store.
What Cancellation Will Cost You
Device Installment Balance
If you’re paying off a phone through AT&T’s installment plan, the full remaining balance is added to your final bill the moment the line is canceled.3AT&T. Cancel Wireless Service or Remove a Line On a $1,000 phone financed over 36 months, canceling early means whatever hasn’t been paid yet hits at once.
Lost Promotional Credits
This is what catches most people off guard. Trade-in deals, buy-one-get-one offers, and similar promotions apply as monthly bill credits, not upfront discounts. When the line deactivates, the credits stop. The installment charges for the device stay. You don’t get the remainder as a lump sum, and there’s no way to transfer them. On an $800 credit spread over 36 months, canceling at month 12 means collecting roughly a third of it and forfeiting the rest.
Early Termination Fee
If you signed a one- or two-year service commitment, ending it early triggers a fee. Consumer accounts pay between $58 and $325, with the amount dropping as you get closer to the end of the term. Business, government, and other non-consumer accounts can pay up to $750 depending on the agreement and device.4AT&T. AT&T Mobility Fee Schedule Most FirstNet lines opened recently sit on installment plans rather than traditional contracts, so this fee often doesn’t apply. Check your original agreement before you assume anything.
Restocking and Non-Return Fees
Returning a device to a store can carry a restocking fee of up to $55, though Apple devices returned in unopened packaging are exempt. Returns have to happen within 14 days of purchase, or 30 days for Corporate Responsibility User lines.5AT&T. Return and Exchange Policy If AT&T sent you a warranty replacement and you don’t return the original within 30 days, the non-return fee runs up to $850.6AT&T. What to Have Ready Before You Call
- Your account number, at the top of your paper bill or in the myAT&T app.
- Your account passcode, the four- to eight-digit PIN set when the account was opened. Reset it through the app or website first if you don’t remember it.
- Government-issued ID if you’re going into a store. Phone cancellations rely on the passcode instead.
- A Number Transfer PIN if you’re taking your number to a new carrier. Generate it in the myAT&T app or website under your line settings.
How to Cancel
By Phone
Call 800-574-7000 and select the option for account management or service changes.7FirstNet. How to Contact FirstNet You’ll likely be routed to a retention specialist. If you’ve decided, say so plainly and ask them to process the cancellation. Before hanging up, get a confirmation number and ask for a confirmation email. If a charge shows up on a later bill that shouldn’t be there, that documentation is what fixes it.
At an AT&T Store
Any AT&T retail location can process a FirstNet cancellation. Bring your ID, and bring the device if you need to return it. Ask for a printed receipt showing the cancellation date and any final charges. A verbal confirmation isn’t enough.
By Porting Your Number
If you’re switching carriers and keeping the same number, don’t call AT&T first. Give your new carrier your AT&T account number and your Number Transfer PIN, and they’ll pull the number over. Your FirstNet line deactivates automatically once the port completes.3AT&T. Cancel Wireless Service or Remove a Line Installment balances and any early termination fee still apply and land on your final bill. Don’t cancel the line yourself before the port finishes, or you’ll lose the number.
Your Final Bill
AT&T doesn’t prorate the last month of service. You’re billed for the full cycle regardless of what day you cancel, and you can keep using the service through the end of that cycle.8AT&T. Prorated Credits for Service Cancellation Are Ending Timing your cancellation for the last day or two of a billing cycle squeezes the most value out of that final payment.
The final bill combines the last month’s service charges with any remaining device installment balance, an early termination fee if one applies, and any non-return fee. If a credit balance is left after everything settles, AT&T mails a refund check. Turn off any autopay method tied to the account after the final bill posts so nothing slips through afterward.
If You’re an Active-Duty Service Member
The Servicemembers Civil Relief Act lets active-duty service members cancel wireless service without an early termination fee. You need to be transferred for 90 days or more for deployment, training, or school, or relocating outside AT&T’s coverage area, and your account has to be in good standing with the most recent bill paid.9AT&T. Cancel or Reactivate AT&T Service for U.S. Military or Service Members
You can submit the request online or by fax up to 30 days before you leave. Include the account name and number, the phone numbers to cancel, the cancellation date, the service member’s full name and deployment date, and a copy of the deployment orders. If you started an installment plan before you received orders and you’re past the 14-day return window, you may be able to keep the device without owing further monthly installments.9AT&T. Canceling After a Death
A family member or estate representative can close the account of a deceased subscriber by calling AT&T at 800-331-0500. Have the deceased’s mobile number and either their Social Security number or the account password. Any unpaid balance becomes the estate’s responsibility. Proof of death should let the account close without an early termination fee, though the process can take more than one call to complete.
