How to Cancel Edelman Financial Engines: Fees, Transfers, and 401(k)s

To cancel Edelman Financial Engines, send a written termination request to the firm identifying your account and the date you want management to stop. The firm’s Form ADV brochure confirms there are no early termination fees, and your only final charge is a prorated advisory fee covering the days the firm actually managed your money during the current quarter.1Edelman Financial Engines. Part 2A of Form ADV Firm Brochure The process differs depending on whether you’re a private wealth client or a participant in a workplace 401(k) managed account, so identify which one applies before you start.

Send a Written Termination Request

Pull out your Investment Management Agreement first. The Form ADV brochure doesn’t impose a mandatory 30-day notice period, but your individual contract may include specific terms, so check before you write.1Edelman Financial Engines. Part 2A of Form ADV Firm Brochure

Keep the letter short. Include your full name, account number, the date you want management to stop, and an explicit instruction to cease all advisory billing. One paragraph is enough. The goal is an unambiguous record that you’re revoking the firm’s authority to trade or manage assets on your behalf.

Send it by certified mail with return receipt requested. Any dispute over when the notice took effect turns on when Edelman received the letter, not when you dropped it in the mail. You can also call your assigned planner or reach the firm by phone, but follow any verbal request with the written notice. A phone call alone leaves you without documentation.

Because fees are billed quarterly, timing the letter for the start of a new quarter minimizes what you owe on the way out. After you send the notice, watch your statements through one full billing cycle and confirm no new advisory fees post after your termination date.

What You’ll Pay on the Way Out

Edelman does not charge cancellation penalties. If you cancel mid-quarter, you owe a prorated management fee for the portion of the quarter the firm actually managed the account.2Edelman Financial Engines. Wrap Fee Brochure A cancellation six weeks into a 13-week quarter, for example, produces a charge of roughly six weeks of the annual fee applied to your assets.

Review the final statement against your fee tier to confirm the math. If Edelman collected fees in advance for a period that runs past your cancellation date, you can request a refund of the unearned portion by calling 1-800-601-5957.1Edelman Financial Engines. Part 2A of Form ADV Firm Brochure

Moving Your Assets to a New Firm

The transfer starts at your new brokerage, not at Edelman. You complete a Transfer Initiation Form at the receiving firm, which submits the request electronically through the Automated Customer Account Transfer Service. Under FINRA Rule 11870, the carrying firm has one business day to validate and three business days to complete, so a clean transfer wraps up in about six business days.3FINRA. Decide whether to move holdings in-kind or sell first and transfer cash. In-kind transfers avoid triggering capital gains taxes, but they only work if your new institution can hold the same securities. Proprietary funds and some mutual fund share classes Edelman uses may not be available at another custodian, and those positions may need to be liquidated first.

Fractional shares and small residual balances sometimes can’t move through ACATS and clear separately. Don’t consider the transfer finished until the old account shows a zero balance, including any cash sitting in a sweep account.

Any position you sell for more than you paid produces a capital gain that lands on your tax return for the year of the sale.5Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 409 Capital Gains and Losses Long-term gains on assets held over a year are taxed at lower rates than short-term gains, so if you’re forced to sell, look at holding periods before you liquidate. If the gains are sizable, you may need to make an estimated tax payment to avoid an underpayment penalty.

IRAs: Use a Direct Transfer

If your Edelman account is an IRA, request a direct trustee-to-trustee transfer. The funds go straight from Edelman’s custodian to your new IRA custodian with no taxes withheld and no taxable event.6Internal Revenue Service. Rollovers of Retirement Plan and IRA Distributions

The alternative is a 60-day rollover, and it’s a trap worth avoiding. The funds are distributed to you personally, and you have 60 days to deposit them into another IRA. Miss the window and the entire distribution becomes taxable income, plus a 10% early withdrawal penalty if you’re under 59½. A distribution from a retirement plan also triggers mandatory 20% withholding, meaning you’d need to bring cash from elsewhere to complete a full rollover and avoid a partial taxable event.6Internal Revenue Service. Rollovers of Retirement Plan and IRA Distributions A direct transfer sidesteps all of this.

Canceling a Workplace 401(k) Managed Account

If you were enrolled in Edelman’s Professional Management service through your employer’s retirement plan, cancellation is different from ending a private wealth relationship. You’re opting out of a managed account overlay inside your existing 401(k), not closing the 401(k) itself.

Call Edelman’s workplace division at (800) 601-5957 or email advisor@EdelmanFinancialEngines.com, weekdays 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. ET.7Edelman Financial Engines. Contact Us Tell them you want to cancel Professional Management. The managed account service stops making allocation changes, and the advisory fee stops being deducted from your plan balance. Your 401(k) stays open, your money stays in whatever funds it held at the time of cancellation, and you take over your own allocation decisions.

Some employer plans auto-enroll participants into managed accounts, so verify the opt-out took effect by checking your next quarterly statement for any residual advisory charges. Workplace fees will not exceed 1.00% of managed assets for plans with at least $350,000, but that’s still real money on a large balance once you no longer want the service.8Edelman Financial Engines.
