How to Cancel DISH TV: Call Steps, Fees, and Returns

To cancel DISH TV, call the dedicated cancellation line at 866-974-0769 between 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m. Eastern, any day of the week.1DISH. Cancel My Service There is no online or in-app option. Plan on 15 to 30 minutes on the phone, and expect two things to shape your final bill: whether you’re still inside your contract term, and how quickly you return the leased receivers after service ends.

What to Have Ready Before You Call

Pull your DISH account number from a recent billing statement or your online dashboard. Have the four-digit security PIN you set when you opened the account, since the representative uses it to verify your identity.

Check the start date of your service agreement while you’re logged in. If your 24-month commitment has already ended, you can cancel with no penalty. If it hasn’t, you’ll owe an early termination fee. Also glance at the equipment tab so you know which receivers are on your account. That list matters when the return kit arrives.

Making the Cancellation Call

The cancellation line (866-974-0769) is separate from the general customer service number, 800-333-3474, which handles billing and technical support.2DISH. Contact Us Calling the general line means getting transferred.

Your call will route to a retention specialist whose job is to keep you. Expect offers of discounts, upgrades, or a temporary pause. If you’ve decided to cancel, be polite and direct. You don’t need to explain your reasoning.

Before you hang up, get three items from the representative: their name, their employee ID, and a cancellation confirmation number. Write the confirmation number down or screenshot it. If DISH later says the account was never closed, that number ends the dispute. Skipping this step is where most post-cancellation billing problems begin.

Returning Your Equipment

All DISH receivers are leased and must be returned within 30 days of disconnection.3DISH. Flex24 Plan Agreement DISH mails a return kit with a prepaid UPS shipping label after you cancel. The kit can take up to 15 business days to reach you, so don’t panic if it isn’t immediate.

DISH’s return center page says you can keep or dispose of remotes, cables, and the satellite dish itself.4DISH. Return Center The service agreements, however, list remote controls, smart cards, and LNBFs (the component on the dish arm) as leased. When in doubt, put everything in the box rather than gamble on an unreturned equipment charge.

Get a tracking receipt from UPS at drop-off. That receipt is your proof the equipment left your hands. Keep it until your final bill posts and shows no equipment charges.

Early Termination Fees

Canceling before your contract ends triggers an early termination fee, and the rate depends on which agreement you signed. Under the Flex24 plan, the fee is $20 for each month remaining on the commitment.3DISH. Flex24 Plan Agreement Under the Existing Customer Price Lock Advantage agreement, it’s $10 per remaining month.5DISH. Existing Customer Price Lock Advantage

A Flex24 customer with 10 months left would owe $200. The same customer on Price Lock Advantage would owe $100. Either way, the fee lands on your final bill and DISH can charge the card on file.

There is one clean exception. DISH waives the fee if you cancel within 24 hours of accepting the agreement, regardless of plan.6DISH. Residential Customer Agreement If you just signed and want out, move quickly.

Charges for Equipment You Don’t Return

Miss the 30-day window and DISH bills you per device. The rates from DISH’s fees page:7DISH. Fees

  • Hopper 3: $350
  • Hopper with Sling: $300
  • Hopper Duo: $150
  • Hopper Plus, 4K Joey, Super Joey, Wally, Wired Joey 4, Wireless Joey 4: $100 each
  • Hopper, Wired Joey (1, 2, 3), Wireless Joey: $50 each
  • LNB: $49
  • Smart Card: $50

A household with a Hopper 3 and two Joeys can face over $450 in equipment charges on top of any remaining service balance. DISH charges these to the card on file or adds them to the final bill, and unpaid balances can be sent to collections.

Pausing Instead of Canceling

If you’re canceling because of a temporary situation like an extended trip or a seasonal move, DISH Pause suspends service instead of ending it. It costs $5 per month, and you can pause for 3, 6, or 9 months.8DISH. DISH Pause You keep your equipment and avoid the early termination fee because your contract stays intact.

Note the tradeoff: if your plan includes a price guarantee, activating DISH Pause ends that guarantee. When service resumes, your monthly rate can be higher than what you were paying. Weigh that against canceling now and possibly signing a fresh agreement later.

Your Final Bill

Your last statement includes a prorated charge for the days you used during the final billing cycle, plus any early termination fee and any unreturned equipment charges. If you prepaid and have a credit balance, DISH is supposed to refund it, though former customers report refund processing can be slow and may take follow-up calls.

Read the final bill closely. If it shows charges for equipment you already returned, contact DISH with your UPS tracking number and dispute them. Keep your cancellation confirmation number and shipping receipts for at least 90 days after the account closes, which is enough time for billing issues to surface.

Canceling for a Deceased Account Holder

Closing an account after the subscriber has died also requires a phone call. You’ll need to provide the last four digits of the account holder’s Social Security number, a copy of the death certificate, and either the account number or the amount of the most recent payment. DISH’s agreements technically allow the early termination fee to apply even in this situation, because the contract language covers disconnection “for any reason.”3DISH. Flex24 Plan Agreement Whether a representative waives it depends on the individual conversation, so ask, but don’t assume.
