How to Cancel Direct Auto Insurance Online: Refunds, Fees, and SR-22

You cannot fully cancel a Direct Auto Insurance policy online. The company’s cancellation page directs policyholders to call 1-877-463-4732 or visit a local office, and the online account portal has no cancel button.1Direct Auto Insurance. Cancelling Your Auto Insurance Policy Your online account still has a role: it’s where you gather the information that makes the phone call fast and clean.

What the Online Account Will and Won’t Do

Logging in at directauto.com lets you view policy details, track payments, check your renewal date, update personal information, access ID cards, and file claims.2Direct Auto Insurance. Manage Your Direct Auto Insurance Account If you’ve been clicking through “Manage Policy” looking for a cancellation option, stop — it isn’t there.

Use the portal to pull your policy number, coverage dates, payment history, and current billing cycle dates. Download or screenshot your policy documents while you’re in there. Having all of this in front of you before you dial means the representative can verify you quickly and process the request without callbacks.

Line Up New Coverage First

If you’re switching insurers rather than dropping coverage entirely, bind your new policy before you call Direct Auto. Even a single day without active coverage counts as a lapse, and most states require continuous insurance for any registered vehicle. A gap can mean fines, impoundment, or registration suspension depending on where you live.

Set your new policy’s start date to the same day your Direct Auto coverage ends. A one-day overlap is cheaper than any version of a gap.

Read Your Cancellation Clause

Open your policy document from the online account and look for three things before you call:

  • Notice requirements. Some policies require a minimum notice period, often tied to your billing cycle.
  • Refund method. Prorated refunds return the exact unused premium. Short-rate refunds let the insurer keep an additional penalty — often around 10% of the unearned premium — as a cancellation charge. The difference matters most if you prepaid.
  • Effective date options. Decide whether you want coverage to end immediately or at the end of the current billing period, and have the specific date ready.

What to Have in Hand Before You Call

Gather these items so the call doesn’t stall:

  • Your policy number, from your insurance card, billing statement, or account dashboard.
  • Your driver’s license or other ID for verification.
  • Proof of new coverage if you’re switching — the new insurer’s declaration page, or at minimum the policy number and carrier name. Some states require proof of replacement coverage before the old policy can be canceled.
  • Bill of sale or title transfer paperwork if you’re canceling because you sold the vehicle.

Ask the representative for a letter of experience during the call. This is a summary of your coverage history and claims record from Direct Auto, and it can qualify you for discounts with a new insurer. It’s much harder to request once you’ve already left.

Making the Cancellation Call

Call 1-877-463-4732. Customer service hours are Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM CST, and Saturday, 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM CST. The line is closed Sundays.3Direct Auto Insurance. Contact Us

The representative will verify your identity, confirm which policy you’re canceling if you have more than one, and ask for your preferred cancellation date and reason. The reason doesn’t affect whether the cancellation goes through. Expect a retention offer — discounts or coverage adjustments. If you’ve already secured new coverage, politely decline and move the call forward.

Before hanging up, get the representative to confirm:

  • The exact cancellation effective date.
  • Whether a refund will be issued, the amount, and how it will be delivered.
  • A confirmation or reference number for the cancellation.

Write down the representative’s name and the time of your call. If a billing dispute surfaces later, that documentation is what resolves it.

Canceling at a Local Office

Direct Auto has physical offices across several states, primarily in the Southeast and Midwest. Find the nearest one through the store locator at directauto.com.4Direct Auto Insurance. Direct Auto Insurance Locations Bring the same documents listed above. The advantage over the phone is that you can walk out with a printed cancellation confirmation.

Confirm It Actually Happened

Don’t treat the policy as canceled until you have written proof. Direct Auto should send a confirmation showing the official cancellation date and any final billing adjustments. If nothing arrives within a few business days, log back into your online account to check whether the policy still shows as active. Call again if it does.

Save everything: the confirmation message, your reference number, any chat transcripts, and screenshots of the account showing the canceled status. Check your final statement for unexpected charges.

Refunds and Fees

If a refund is due, how much you get back depends on your policy’s refund method. Prorated returns the exact unused portion. Short-rate deducts a penalty — commonly around 10% of the unearned premium — before refunding the rest. On a monthly payment plan, you may owe a remaining balance for the current month if you cancel mid-cycle, since partial-month refunds aren’t always issued.

Refunds typically come back through the payment method you used. Credit card payments get credited to the card; cash or check payments usually come back as a mailed check. Make sure Direct Auto has your current mailing address on file. Refund processing can take anywhere from a couple of weeks to about 30 days depending on the method.5Direct Auto Insurance. Direct Auto Insurance FAQ

Watch the DMV

Insurers in most states notify the DMV electronically when a policy is canceled, typically within 15 to 20 days. If the DMV doesn’t see replacement coverage, your registration can be suspended.

Some states require you to surrender your license plates before canceling insurance, not after. New York, for example, will suspend both registration and license if you cancel insurance without first returning the plates. If you’re not replacing the policy — because you sold the vehicle or are putting it in storage — check your state’s DMV website for plate surrender requirements before you call. When you surrender plates, get a receipt and take a photo for your records.

If Your Car Is Financed

A lender on a car loan or lease almost always requires comprehensive and collision coverage for the life of the loan. Insurers notify lienholders of cancellations the same way they notify the DMV. If you cancel without replacement coverage in place, the lender buys force-placed insurance — which protects only the lender’s interest in the vehicle, not your liability to other drivers — and adds the premium to your loan balance at a substantially higher cost than a standard policy.

Send your new declaration page to both the lender and Direct Auto before the switch takes effect.

If You Carry an SR-22

Canceling a policy with an SR-22 filing has sharper consequences. The moment coverage lapses, Direct Auto files an SR-26 form with your state’s DMV, notifying them that you no longer meet financial responsibility requirements. Most states have no grace period — one day uncovered can trigger a license suspension, additional fines, and an extension of the SR-22 filing period.

If you’re switching insurers while keeping an SR-22, the new insurer should file the SR-22 with the state before your Direct Auto policy ends. Confirm with the new insurer that the filing has been submitted and accepted before you call Direct Auto to cancel. Overlap between policies here isn’t a nicety; it’s effectively required.
