Skip it, and billing keeps running at the address after you’ve gone.
What to Have Ready
Pull these together before you start:
- Your account number, at the top right of a paper bill or in your online dashboard.
- The exact date you want billing to end, lined up with your last day on the lease or your home sale closing.
- A forwarding address for the final bill and any refund check.
- Identity verification, typically the last four digits of the Social Security number tied to the account.
If the electric meter is inside the building, you may also need to arrange access so a technician can take a final reading.
Three Ways to Submit the Request
ComEd offers three channels for stopping service.2ComEd. Customer Services The online portal is the fastest: log in to My Account, go to the service management section, choose Stop Service, enter your move-out date and forwarding address, and save the confirmation number the system generates. The mobile app follows the same steps.
To handle it by phone, call 1-800-EDISON-1 and follow the prompts for existing accounts, or ask for a representative if your situation doesn’t fit the automated flow.1ComEd. Contact Us Online Keep the confirmation number either way. It’s your proof of the stop request if a billing dispute comes up later.
Submit as far in advance as you can. ComEd doesn’t publish a hard deadline, but utility stop requests tend to go more smoothly with several business days of lead time. Waiting until the day of your move risks the account staying active another cycle.
Your Final Bill
After your stop date, ComEd takes a final meter reading to calculate usage for your last billing period. Smart meters are read remotely; older meters may need an in-person reading. The final bill is mailed to the forwarding address you provided.
One thing catches people off guard. If you have the same class of ComEd service at more than one address, the utility can transfer an unpaid final balance from the old address to your active account once the bill goes past due.3Illinois General Assembly. Illinois Administrative Code Title 83 – Section 280.50 Billing The transferred amount has to be identified on your bill with the originating address, so watch for that line item if you’re moving within ComEd’s territory.
Getting Your Security Deposit Back
If ComEd collected a security deposit when you opened the account, the deposit plus accrued interest is refunded after service has been discontinued for more than 30 days, minus any unpaid balance on the final bill.4Peoples Gas. Illinois Administrative Code Title 83 Part 280 – Procedures for Utilities A $200 deposit against a $65 final bill produces a check for $135 plus whatever interest accrued.
The interest rate on deposits is set annually by the Illinois Commerce Commission, pegged to the average one-year yield on U.S. Treasury securities from the last full week of November, rounded to the nearest half percent.4Peoples Gas. Illinois Administrative Code Title 83 Part 280 – Procedures for Utilities The amount is small, but you’re entitled to it. If the math on your final statement looks off, call ComEd and reference the confirmation number from your stop request.
If You’re on Budget Billing
Budget Billing spreads your annual electricity cost into equal monthly payments, so at any given time you’ve either overpaid or underpaid against actual usage. Stopping service triggers a true-up: the difference between what you’ve paid and what you actually owe lands on your final bill.5ComEd. Budget Billing
Underpaying is common during high-usage summer months. That deferred balance gets added to your final bill and can make it noticeably larger than a typical month. Overpayers get a credit. Check your Budget Billing balance before you file the stop request so nothing about the final bill is a surprise.
If You Buy Supply From an Alternative Retail Electric Supplier
Many Illinois households buy their electricity supply from an Alternative Retail Electric Supplier rather than taking ComEd’s default rate. Stopping ComEd service automatically notifies the supplier that the delivery point is no longer active, so you don’t need to call them separately just to end delivery at that address.
Illinois law also gives residential customers the right to cancel an agreement with an alternative supplier at any time with no termination fees and no penalties.6Illinois General Assembly. Illinois Administrative Code Title 83 Part 412 – Alternative Retail Electric Supplier Rules The protection covers the supply contract itself. The one exception is charges for separate devices, equipment, or other services the supplier provided, which sit outside the no-fee rule. If a supplier tries to charge a cancellation penalty on the supply portion of the contract, point them to that regulation.
Closing an Account After a Death
If you’re handling the estate of someone who passed away, contact ComEd to close or transfer the account. The executor named in the will should make the call. With no will, next of kin or a court-appointed administrator handles it.

ComEd will typically ask for a copy of the death certificate and proof of your identity, and the submission method (email, fax, or mail) can vary, so ask the representative which they want. If someone else will keep living at the property, they need to open a new account in their own name rather than take over the existing one.
What Happens at the Property After You Cancel
Stopping service doesn’t always mean the power shuts off immediately. In rental properties, the account often reverts to the landlord or property manager until a new tenant starts service. If you own an empty home, the meter may stay energized but unbilled for a short period before ComEd sends a technician to disconnect. Selling? Coordinate your stop date with the buyer’s start date so a gap doesn’t hold up closing.
If you later restart service at the same or a different address within ComEd’s territory, you go through the standard new-account process, which may include a fresh credit check and a new deposit depending on your payment history.
