To cancel a ChatGPT Plus free trial before you’re charged, cancel through the same platform you signed up on — the OpenAI website, the Apple App Store, or the Google Play Store — and do it at least 24 hours before the trial ends. Cancel through the wrong platform and nothing happens. That single mistake is the most common reason people think they canceled and then see a $20 charge anyway.
First, Find Out Where You Subscribed
ChatGPT subscriptions run through three separate billing systems: OpenAI’s web billing (handled by Stripe), Apple’s App Store, or Google Play.1OpenAI Help Center. Managing Billing Settings on ChatGPT Web and Platform You have to cancel through the same one you used to subscribe. If you signed up in the iPhone app, canceling on chatgpt.com does nothing, because your billing lives with Apple.
Not sure where you signed up? Log into ChatGPT on the web, open Settings, and check Billing. If you see subscription details and a cancel option, you subscribed on the web. If the billing section is empty or points you elsewhere to manage the subscription, you signed up through Apple or Google. The original purchase confirmation email will also tell you which one.
Cancel on the Web
If you subscribed at chatgpt.com:
- Log in at chatgpt.com.
- Click your profile icon in the bottom-left corner and open Settings.
- Select Billing.
- Click Cancel under the “Cancel plan” section.
That opens a Stripe-hosted billing portal where OpenAI manages payments.2Stripe. Billing Customer Portal The cancel option is easy to miss — it appears as a small grey link near the bottom of the portal, not a prominent button. Stay on the page until you see explicit confirmation that the subscription is canceled. Closing the tab too early can leave the subscription active.3OpenAI Help Center. Cancel on iPhone
If you signed up in the iOS app, Apple handles the billing. You cancel from iPhone Settings, not inside the ChatGPT app:
- Open Settings on your iPhone.
- Tap your name at the top.
- Select Subscriptions.
- Tap ChatGPT in the list.
- Tap Cancel Subscription and confirm.
Your Plus features stay active until the current billing period ends.4OpenAI. How to Cancel Your Apple Subscription for ChatGPT in the ChatGPT iOS App
Cancel on Android
If you signed up in the Android app, Google Play manages your billing:
- Open the Google Play Store app.
- Tap your profile icon in the top right.
- Select Payments and subscriptions, then Subscriptions.
- Find ChatGPT and tap it.
- Tap Cancel subscription and follow the prompts.
If ChatGPT doesn’t show up in your Play subscriptions, you’re probably logged into a different Google account than the one you subscribed with. Switch accounts and look again.3OpenAI Help Center. How Do I Cancel My ChatGPT Subscription
Cancel at Least 24 Hours Before the Trial Ends
To avoid being charged for the next billing period, cancel at least 24 hours before your renewal date.3OpenAI Help Center. How Do I Cancel My ChatGPT Subscription If your trial ends on the 15th, cancel by the 14th. Payment processors sometimes need time to register the cancellation, and a same-day cancel can slip through after the charge has already been submitted.
You keep your Plus features through the rest of the trial period after canceling. Access does not disappear the moment you hit the button, so there’s no reason to wait until the last day.
Verify the Cancellation Actually Went Through
Don’t assume it worked. Go back into the same settings area you used and confirm the status shows the plan as canceled or expiring on a specific date rather than set to renew.
- On the web: Settings, then Billing. The Stripe portal should show no future charges scheduled.
- On iPhone: Settings, your name, Subscriptions.
- On Android: Play Store, Payments and subscriptions, Subscriptions.
OpenAI or the app store may send a confirmation email, but don’t rely on that alone. Seeing the updated status in your account is the reliable check.
Canceling doesn’t touch your chat history or account. Your conversations and uploaded files stay put, and you drop to the free tier when the billing period ends. Deleting the app doesn’t cancel anything either — Apple and Google keep charging whether the app is installed or not. And deleting your OpenAI account is a separate, permanent action that erases your data within 30 days,5OpenAI Help Center. How to Delete Your Account so if you just want to stop paying, cancel the subscription and leave the account alone.
If You Were Already Charged
If the trial converted to a paid subscription before you canceled, OpenAI accepts refund requests for accidental purchases made within 14 days of the charge. Residents of the EU, UK, or Turkey can get a prorated refund if they cancel within 14 days of purchase.6OpenAI Help Center. How Do I Request a Refund for My ChatGPT Subscription
Where you request the refund depends on where you subscribed:

- Google Play subscriptions: refunds take up to 10 business days.

Common Reasons Cancellation Fails
The cancel button is missing. This almost always means you’re on the wrong platform. If you subscribed through Apple but you’re logged into chatgpt.com looking for a cancel option, you won’t find one, because OpenAI doesn’t control that subscription. Go to the platform where you originally paid.
You uninstalled the app and assumed that was enough. It isn’t. Billing continues until you cancel through the subscription settings on your device or in the app store.
You canceled less than 24 hours before renewal and still got charged. Contact OpenAI support within 14 days to request a refund, or Apple or Google if that’s where you subscribed.
Your Rights If a Company Blocks Cancellation
Federal law requires online sellers using recurring charges to provide simple mechanisms for consumers to stop those charges.8Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 US Code 8403 – Negative Option Marketing on the Internet The FTC’s Click-to-Cancel rule goes further: the cancellation process must be at least as easy as the sign-up process and available through the same medium. If you enrolled online, you must be able to cancel online, and a company cannot force you to call a phone number or interact with a chatbot to cancel if you didn’t use one to sign up.9eCFR. 16 CFR 425.6 – Simple Cancellation (Click to Cancel) If a company makes cancellation unreasonably difficult, you can file a complaint at reportfraud.ftc.gov. OpenAI’s cancellation flow is straightforward once you’re on the right platform, but the rights matter if anything goes sideways.
