That timestamp matters if a final billing date is ever disputed.

The One Calendar Month Notice Rule
Bay Club requires at least one full calendar month’s notice for cancellations and other membership changes. If your request lands inside that window, the club moves your end date out to satisfy the requirement.5The Bay Club. The takeaway is timing. Waiting a few extra days to submit can push your effective cancellation out by an entire month.
Settling the Account Before Your Last Day
Bring your balance to zero before your final day of access and return any club property, including locker keys.6The Bay Club. The club can suspend or terminate a membership for nonpayment, but doing so does not erase the debt, and unpaid balances can end up with a collections agency.

If You Just Signed Up: The California Cooling-Off Period
California health studio contracts must let you cancel within five business days of signing, with all payments refunded within 10 days of the club receiving your notice. Higher-value contracts get longer windows:
- $1,500 to $2,000 total contract value: 20 business days to cancel
- $2,001 to $2,500: 30 business days to cancel
- Over $2,500: 45 business days to cancel

Moving, Disability, or Death
If you move more than 25 miles from your Bay Club and cannot transfer to a comparable facility, California law lets you cancel. You owe no further payments and are entitled to a pro rata refund of prepaid fees. The club may charge a relocation cancellation fee, but the statute caps it at $100 if you are in the first half of your contract term and $50 if more than half has elapsed.7Justia Law. A medical condition that physically prevents you from using the facilities also cancels the contract with no further payments due, provided the disability is verified by a physician. If a member dies, the same protections extend to the estate: no further obligations, and any prepaid balance for services not yet received is refunded to the member’s representative.7Justia Law. Military Orders
The federal Servicemembers Civil Relief Act covers gym memberships. Deliver written or electronic notice with a copy of your orders. Bay Club cannot charge an early termination fee. Any advance payments for the period after your termination date must be refunded within 60 days, though the club can keep payment for the billing period in which termination occurs. Not Ready to Cancel? Freeze Instead

After You Submit
Keep copies of everything: the online submission confirmation, any email replies, certified mail receipts, and your final closing statement. Watch your bank or card statements for at least two full billing cycles after your effective end date. Extra charges after cancellation happen more often than they should, and the paper trail is what you need to dispute them.
