How to Cancel Barclays Blue Rewards: Timing, Refunds, and Cashback

To cancel Barclays Blue Rewards, open the Barclays app, tap Products, then Barclays Blue Rewards, and select the option to cancel your membership. You can also cancel through Online Banking or by calling telephone banking on 0345 734 5345.¹² The timing detail that matters most: cancel before 5pm on the last day of the month and the next £5 fee won’t be charged. Miss that cut-off and you’ll pay for another full month.³

Cancelling in the App or Online Banking

The app is the quickest route. Open it, tap Products, then Barclays Blue Rewards, and follow the cancellation option from there.¹

Online Banking works the same way. Log in with your 12-digit membership number and go to the Blue Rewards section of your account. If you can’t remember the number, check step one of the Online Banking login page: if you previously saved it, it appears next to your name and usually begins with 2010.⁴

Cancelling by Phone

Call 0345 734 5345 if you can’t use the app or Online Banking.² You’ll go through security verification before the representative processes the cancellation, so keep your debit card handy; the questions often reference card details or recent transactions.

Timing the Cancellation to Avoid the Next Fee

Barclays charges the £5 fee on the second working day of each month, and that payment covers the month ahead rather than the month just gone. Cancel before 5pm on the last day of the month and you won’t be charged again. Cancel after that and another full month is billed.³

There’s no pro-rata refund for a month you’ve already paid for. You keep the benefits until the membership formally closes, but you won’t get anything back for the unused days.³

The 14-Day Cooling-Off Refund

If you only recently joined, Barclays refunds the £5 fee if you cancel within 14 days of first receiving the Blue Rewards terms and conditions.³

Your Cashback Balance and Rewards Wallet

You have 40 days after leaving to redeem any available cashback balance. When you cancel, Barclays instructs its cashback scheme provider, Reward, to start removing you from Barclays Cashback Rewards. If you hold a Barclaycard linked to your cashback account, Reward removes the linked debit cards but keeps the cashback account open so you can still earn through Barclaycard spending.³

Barclays closes your Blue Rewards Wallet and returns any remaining balance to you. The money may go to your nominated current account, another instant access account, or arrive by cheque.³ You don’t need to move the balance yourself, but check your account afterwards to confirm the funds arrived.

Rainy Day Saver and Blue Rewards Saver

The Rainy Day Saver is available only to Blue Rewards members and Premier Banking customers. If you cancel Blue Rewards and don’t hold a Premier account, Barclays converts your Rainy Day Saver to whatever instant access savings account is available at the time, and will contact you beforehand with the new terms.⁵ The replacement rate will almost certainly be lower than the 3.96% AER paid on the first £5,000 under Blue Rewards.¹

The Blue Rewards Saver, which pays 2.51% AER in months with no withdrawal, also depends on membership, so expect it to be converted or closed on the same basis.¹ On a £5,000 Rainy Day Saver balance, the lost interest can outweigh the £60 annual cost of the membership, so it’s worth checking the maths before you cancel.

Apple TV+ and Other Subscriptions

Any Apple TV+ and MLS Season Pass subscriptions you hold through Blue Rewards end when the membership closes.⁶ The same goes for any other subscriptions included with the membership.³ To keep Apple TV+, subscribe directly through Apple at the standard price.

Your Current Account and Rejoining Later

Cancelling Blue Rewards doesn’t affect your underlying Barclays current account. You keep the account, the debit card, and the standard features; only the rewards-tier benefits fall away. You can rejoin later if you still meet the eligibility requirements, which include being 18 or over, a UK resident with an eligible current account, at least £800 paid into your nominated account each month, and registration for the Barclays app.¹
