To cancel an Axis Bank credit card, clear every rupee owed on the account, then submit a closure request through the credit card helpline, any Axis Bank branch, customer service email, NetBanking, or the Axis Mobile app. The bank charges nothing for closure and, under RBI rules, must complete it within seven working days of your request. Miss that deadline and the bank owes you ₹500 for every day of delay.
Settle the Account First
Axis Bank will not process closure while anything is outstanding. Pay off the principal, any accrued interest, and every active EMI or loan booked against the card. Outstanding EMIs are foreclosed as part of cancellation, so the remaining loan amount becomes due immediately.1Axis Bank. Are There Any Charges Applicable on Card Closure
Watch out for trailing interest. If you carried a balance from the previous cycle, interest keeps accruing daily until your payment posts. You can pay the full statement amount, believe you are at zero, then see a small residual charge on the next statement and lose another cycle. Call the helpline before you submit closure and ask for the exact payoff figure that includes interest up to the payment date.
A few other things need attention before you make the request:
- Cancel any auto-pay mandates, standing instructions, or subscription charges linked to the card. In the Axis Mobile app or NetBanking, auto-pay can be disabled under Manage Billers on the Bill Pay page. A merchant charge hitting a closed card creates complications you do not want.2Axis Bank. - Redeem your Edge Reward Points or Edge Miles. As of October 2025, Axis Bank forfeits unredeemed points 30 days after the card account closes, and there is no recovery once they lapse.3Axis Bank. Edge Rewards Terms and Conditions
- Keep your registered mobile number, the 16-digit card number, and date of birth ready. Every channel will use these for identity verification.

At a Branch

Through NetBanking or the Axis Mobile App
RBI rules require issuers to accept closure through internet banking and mobile apps, and Axis Bank supports both.6Reserve Bank of India. Master Direction on Credit Card and Debit Card Issuance and Conduct Directions 2022 Log in and find the card management or service request section. Menu paths change with app updates, so use the in-app search if the option is not immediately visible. After submission, the system should generate a service request number; save it. If no acknowledgment arrives within 24 hours, call the helpline to confirm the request was actually logged.
The Seven-Day Rule and the ₹500-a-Day Penalty
The RBI Master Direction on Credit Card and Debit Card Issuance and Conduct Directions, 2022 sets out protections you can rely on:
- Closure must be completed within seven working days once all dues are paid. If any amount is still owed when you submit the request, the bank must immediately tell you what you owe rather than wait for the next billing cycle; the seven-day clock starts once that amount is cleared.6Reserve Bank of India. - The bank cannot insist on a branch visit or a physical letter. Closure must be accepted through the helpline, email, IVR, website, internet banking, and mobile app.6Reserve Bank of India. Master Direction on Credit Card and Debit Card Issuance and Conduct Directions 2022

Blocking a card is not the same as closing it. Blocking freezes transactions while leaving the account relationship in place; closure permanently terminates the account.7Reserve Bank of India. FAQs on Master Direction If a representative offers to block the card instead, insist on full closure.
Confirm the Closure and Protect Your Credit Report
You should receive an SMS and email confirmation once the bank processes the closure. Do not stop there. Ask for a written closure confirmation or no-due certificate and keep it. If the account later shows as active or in default on your credit report, that document is what fixes it.
Banks must update Credit Information Companies like CIBIL within 30 days of closing the account.6Reserve Bank of India. Master Direction on Credit Card and Debit Card Issuance and Conduct Directions 2022 Pull your CIBIL report about 45 days after closure and check the status. “Closed” is neutral. “Written off” is a red flag that can stay on your profile for years and needs to be disputed with both the bank and the credit bureau.
Once you have the confirmation, destroy the physical card. Cut through the magnetic strip, the EMV chip, and the card number so the pieces cannot be reassembled. Destroy any supplementary or add-on card issued to a family member the same way.
How Cancellation Affects Your CIBIL Score
Closing a credit card can pull your CIBIL score down in the short term. Two mechanisms are at work. Your total available credit drops, so if you carry balances on other cards, your utilization ratio rises because the denominator just shrank. Lenders generally look for utilization under 30%, and losing a high-limit card can push you above that overnight. If the card you are closing is one of your older accounts, its eventual removal also shortens the average age of your credit history, another scoring input.
None of this is a reason to keep a card you do not want. If timing matters, pay down balances on your other cards before you cancel so your utilization ratio stays comfortable once the limit disappears. And if this is your only credit card, be aware that you will have no revolving credit history contributing to your score after closure.
If Axis Bank Delays or Refuses to Close the Card
If seven working days pass after you cleared your dues and the card is still open, remind the bank of the ₹500-per-day penalty under the RBI Master Direction. Cite the service request number and the date you submitted the request. That reminder alone is often enough.
If nothing happens, escalate to the Axis Bank nodal officer, whose contact details are published on the bank’s website. Give the nodal officer up to 30 days to resolve the issue.
If the bank still does not act, file a complaint under the Reserve Bank Integrated Ombudsman Scheme, 2021. Complaints can be lodged online at cms.rbi.org.in, by email at crpc@rbi.org.in, or by post to the Centralised Receipt and Processing Centre in Chandigarh.8Reserve Bank of India. The Reserve Bank Integrated Ombudsman Scheme 2021 You will need the card details, dates of the closure request, copies of your correspondence with the bank, and a description of the relief sought. The Ombudsman process is free, and credit card complaints tend to move quickly once a regulator is watching.
