To cancel Americor, send the company’s client services team a written cancellation notice with your account ID, then separately stop the automatic bank drafts and request the return of any money sitting in your dedicated savings account. Federal rules bar debt settlement companies from charging a cancellation fee or holding your escrow funds hostage, so the program itself can end at any time.1eCFR. 16 CFR 310.4 – Abusive Telemarketing Acts or Practices The work is in the follow-through: closing the escrow, revoking ACH authorization at your bank, and preparing for creditors to resume collecting from you directly.
Pull Your Contract and Account Details First
Before you contact anyone, find the Client Service Agreement you signed when you enrolled. If you don’t have the paper copy, log in at client.americor.com and look under your documents. You need two pieces of information from it: your Americor account ID and the date your program started. Having both ready keeps the cancellation from stalling over a mismatched record.
Many Americor agreements include a Notice of Cancellation form as an attachment near the end. If yours has one, fill it out with your name, address, account ID, and a plain statement that you’re canceling. If it’s missing, a short letter or email with the same information works.
While the contract is open, read the fee schedule. Americor charges between 15% and 25% of the enrolled debt, but only on accounts that have actually been settled and on which you’ve made at least one payment under the settlement.2CNBC. Americor Debt Relief Review 2026 If no debts have been settled yet, no fee is owed. If one or two were settled before you decided to leave, Americor is entitled to its negotiated fee on those specific accounts and nothing on the rest. Federal rules back this up: a debt relief company cannot collect a fee until a settlement has been reached, you’ve agreed to it, and you’ve made at least one payment toward it.3Federal Trade Commission. If You Just Enrolled, Check the Three-Day Window
BBB complaints referencing Americor’s contract describe a three-day cancellation period with a provision requiring any drafted funds to be refunded within ten business days of the cancellation notice. If you signed up only a few days ago, send your notice today and cite the cancellation provision by name.
No One Can Charge You to Leave
Whatever any paperwork suggests, federal law prevents a penalty for leaving. The FTC’s Telemarketing Sales Rule says that when a debt relief company has you set aside money in a dedicated account, you can withdraw from the program at any time without penalty and receive all non-earned funds within seven business days of your request.1eCFR. 16 CFR 310.4 – Abusive Telemarketing Acts or Practices If you’re told you owe an early termination fee, report it to the FTC or the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.
How to Send the Cancellation Notice
Email the cancellation to Americor’s client services team and put your account ID in the subject line so it gets routed quickly. The email itself creates a timestamped record.
For a stronger paper trail, also send a physical copy by certified mail with return receipt requested to Americor’s headquarters at 18200 Von Karman Ave, Suite 600, Irvine, CA 92612. The signed receipt proves exactly when the company was notified, which matters if payments keep drafting or fees keep posting after you’ve canceled.
You can also upload the notice through the client portal. If you do, request written confirmation of receipt. Straightforward cancellations tend to process within about a week; accounts with active settlements take longer because those settlements have to be unwound before the file closes.
Stop the Automatic Drafts and Get Your Escrow Back
Canceling with Americor does not automatically stop money from leaving your bank. Your monthly deposits go to a dedicated savings account held by a third-party payment processor, and that processor has its own standing authorization to pull funds from your bank. You have to cut both ends off.
Close the Dedicated Account With the Payment Processor
After notifying Americor, call the payment processor directly and ask them to close the dedicated account and send back your remaining balance. Under the Telemarketing Sales Rule, non-earned funds must be returned within seven business days of your request.1eCFR. 16 CFR 310.4 – Abusive Telemarketing Acts or Practices Refunds generally come as an ACH transfer or paper check. Confirm the exact balance before the account closes so you can check the refund against it. Watch for small bank fees deducted along the way; BBB records include at least one case where a bank fee was taken out of the refund and had to be separately credited back.
Revoke ACH Authorization at Your Bank
Call your bank and place a stop-payment order on any recurring ACH drafts linked to Americor or its processor. Federal law lets you stop a preauthorized electronic transfer by notifying your bank at least three business days before the next scheduled draft.4Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 U.S. Code 1693e – Preauthorized Transfers You can do it by phone, though the bank may ask for written confirmation within 14 days.5eCFR. 12 CFR 1005.10 – Preauthorized Transfers Don’t skip this. Even after Americor processes the cancellation on its side, an automated draft can still fire if your bank hasn’t been told to block it.
What Happens to Your Debts Once You Leave
The moment you cancel, any negotiations Americor had running on your behalf stop. Creditors who were waiting for a settlement offer will go back to collecting from you directly, and tentative deals that weren’t finalized will usually fall apart.
If Americor had told you to stop paying certain creditors while they negotiated, those accounts have been piling up missed payments the whole time. Expect phone calls, letters, and emails from creditors or collection agencies to resume. Some will offer a payment plan or their own settlement terms. Others, especially on larger balances, may file suit. Lawsuit risk rises with the age of the delinquency and the size of the balance.
Once you’re back in control, prioritize accounts closest to your state’s statute of limitations, accounts with the largest balances, and any where a creditor has already threatened legal action.
Taxes on Debts That Were Already Settled
If Americor settled one or more debts before you canceled, the forgiven portion is generally treated as taxable income. On a $10,000 balance settled for $6,000, the $4,000 difference is canceled debt reportable for the year the cancellation occurred.6Internal Revenue Service. Canceled Debt – Is It Taxable or Not
The creditor will usually send a Form 1099-C showing the canceled amount. Even without the form, you’re still responsible for reporting the income on Form 1040 with Schedule 1.
There’s an important exception. If you were insolvent when the debt was canceled, meaning your total liabilities exceeded the fair market value of your total assets, you can exclude the canceled amount from income up to the amount of the insolvency. You claim it by filing IRS Form 982 with your return and checking the insolvency box. If liabilities exceeded assets by $3,000 and $4,000 was forgiven, $3,000 is excluded and $1,000 is reported.7Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 U.S. Code 108 – Income From Discharge of Indebtedness Many people in a debt settlement program qualify without realizing it.
What Canceling Does and Doesn’t Do to Your Credit
Leaving the program doesn’t undo credit damage that’s already happened. Each missed payment during enrollment was reported to the bureaus, and the first missed payment on an account previously in good standing is particularly harmful.8Experian. Will Settling a Debt Affect My Credit Score
Accounts that were settled for less than the full balance before you canceled carry a “settled” notation on your credit report, a negative mark that remains for seven years from the date of the original delinquency.8Experian. Will Settling a Debt Affect My Credit Score On accounts that are still unsettled, bringing them current or paying them off is the fastest path to stop further damage, though the late-payment history on the file stays.
Handling Direct Contact From Creditors and Collectors
While you were enrolled, Americor spoke to creditors under a limited authorization. Canceling ends that authorization, and anyone your debt has been assigned or sold to will contact you directly. If an account is in the hands of a third-party collector, the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act lets you send a written notice telling the collector to stop contacting you, and they have to comply, with narrow exceptions for notifying you about specific legal remedies they intend to pursue.9Federal Reserve. Fair Debt Collection Practices Act
A cease-communication letter stops the calls. It does not erase the debt. The creditor can still sue, report to the bureaus, or sell the account to someone else. Use it as a way to control the noise while you work out how to resolve each account, not as a substitute for resolving them.
