How to Cancel American Water Resources by Phone or Online

To cancel American Water Resources, call 855-800-5195 at any time, day or night, and tell the agent which plan or plans you want to end. There is no early termination fee, and your coverage stays active through the end of the current billing cycle.¹²

What to Have Ready Before You Call

Pull your AWR account number off your most recent billing statement, your enrollment confirmation, or your online AWR account. If you signed up for more than one plan (water line, sewer line, and in-home plumbing are sold separately), decide which ones you’re dropping and which, if any, you want to keep.³

If your AWR charges show up on your municipal water or sewer bill instead of a separate AWR statement, note the exact line-item description the utility uses. You’ll want that when you check later that the charge is gone.

Cancelling by Phone

Call 855-800-5195 and choose the cancellation option. The line runs 24 hours a day, seven days a week.¹ The agent will verify your identity with your account number and service address, then confirm which plan or plans you’re ending.

Before you hang up, ask for a confirmation number or a follow-up email documenting the cancellation. Keep it. If a charge shows up later that shouldn’t, the confirmation number is what resolves the dispute quickly.²

Cancelling Online or by Mail

If your AWR charges are billed through your utility, AWR’s FAQ says you can submit a cancellation request through your online AWR account. Log in, open your account settings, and look for the cancellation option. Confirm you receive written or emailed proof that the request went through.²

You can also mail a written cancellation notice to AWR at 1420 Discovery Parkway, Alton, Illinois 62002. Mail is the slowest route and doesn’t give you an instant confirmation, so send it certified with return receipt. That receipt becomes your proof of when you cancelled.

When the Cancellation Takes Effect

Your cancellation is effective at the end of your current AWR billing cycle, not the day you request it. Until that date your protection is still active and you can still file a repair claim.² Calling early in the cycle doesn’t cost you anything; you’re covered through the period you’ve already paid for.

AWR’s plans are marketed as month-to-month with no long-term contract, so there’s usually no annual commitment to break.⁴ Plans do auto-renew, though, whether you pay monthly or annually by credit card. If a renewal date is coming up, cancel before it hits to avoid being billed for another cycle.

Refunds and Final Charges

If you pay monthly, cancelling at the end of a billing cycle usually means nothing to refund and nothing extra to pay. You’ve paid for the current month, you’re covered through it, and billing stops after that.

If you paid annually and cancel early, refund eligibility depends on timing and your state. Under AWR’s standard terms, you get a full refund of all program fees if you cancel before your coverage effective date or within 20 days of receiving your agreement and confirmation letter. If AWR doesn’t issue that refund within 30 days, a 10-percent monthly penalty accrues on the unpaid amount. After that 20-day window, refund rules vary by state: some require a prorated refund for the unused portion of an annual payment, and others do not. If you paid annually and are past 20 days, ask the cancellation agent what refund applies where you live.

Check your next statement to confirm no additional charge posted after your effective cancellation date. Keep the confirmation number and the final statement together in case you need to dispute anything later.

Checking That the Charge Is Off Your Utility Bill

Many AWR customers don’t pay AWR directly. The protection fee appears as a line item on their municipal water or sewer bill. Once your cancellation is processed, AWR notifies the utility to stop collecting. Because utility billing cycles and AWR’s billing cycles don’t always line up, the charge may still appear on your next one or two utility bills.²

Watch your next two utility statements. The AWR line item generally falls somewhere between about $5 and $17 depending on which plans you had.³ If the charge is still there after two billing cycles, call your utility’s billing department with your AWR cancellation confirmation number so they can verify they received the stop-billing notice.

No Cancellation Fee

AWR does not charge an early termination fee, cancellation penalty, or administrative fee for ending a plan. Both the FAQ and the terms describe cancellation as something you can do at any time, and neither references a cost.² If an agent tells you otherwise, ask them to point to the specific provision in your agreement.

If You Want to Re-Enroll Later

You can re-enroll with AWR after cancelling. New coverage typically comes with a waiting period of 30 to 60 days before you can file a repair claim, and it applies whether you’re a brand-new customer or coming back after a gap. If there’s any real chance you’ll need coverage soon, weigh that waiting period before you cancel.
