To cancel an American Amicable life insurance policy, submit a signed Policy Cancellation Request to the company’s home office in Waco, Texas, by mail, fax, or email. You can reach policy services at 800-736-7311 to request the form and confirm what applies to your contract.1American Amicable. Contact Us Before you send anything, check whether you’re still inside the free-look window, and look at a few alternatives that may leave you better off than a full surrender.
If the Policy Is New, Use the Free-Look Period
Every state requires life insurers to offer a free-look period after a new policy is delivered. You can return the policy during that window for a full refund of premiums paid, no questions asked. The length runs from 10 to 30 days depending on the state, measured from the date you receive the policy documents.
If you’re inside that window, skip the surrender process. Call 800-736-7311 or send a written notice to the home office saying you’re returning the policy under the free-look provision. You get all your money back.
Consider These Alternatives First
A full cancellation isn’t always the best move, especially if your policy has built up cash value.
1035 Tax-Free Exchange
If you’re leaving American Amicable for another insurer, a 1035 exchange transfers your cash value directly into a new life insurance policy, an annuity, or a qualified long-term care contract without triggering a taxable gain. The IRS treats it as a swap rather than a sale.2Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 1035 – Certain Exchanges of Insurance Policies The exchange must go directly between the two insurers. If American Amicable sends the cash to you first, the tax-free treatment is lost. Contact the new insurer and ask them to initiate the exchange; they handle the paperwork with American Amicable.
Reduced Paid-Up Insurance
If you can’t afford premiums but still want some coverage, a reduced paid-up option converts your whole life policy into a smaller, fully paid policy. Payments stop immediately, the policy stays in force for life at a lower death benefit based on your current cash value, and it keeps accumulating cash value. You can still take loans against it. This option is often the smartest choice when affordability is the real problem rather than a desire to end coverage.
Extended Term Insurance
Extended term insurance uses your cash value to buy a term policy with the same death benefit as the original. Premiums stop, and your beneficiaries keep the full death benefit for however many years the cash value funds. The policy no longer builds cash value and ends when the term expires.
Life Settlement
Seniors and people with serious health conditions may be able to sell the policy to a third-party buyer for more than the surrender value but less than the death benefit. Standard life settlements target people in their late 70s or older. Viatical settlements are for individuals with a life expectancy of two years or less. Tax treatment and licensing rules vary by state.
What to Gather Before You Contact the Company
- Policy number, found on the policy documents or at the top of premium statements
- Full legal name of the policy owner, exactly as it appears on the application
- Social Security number of the insured
- Current mailing address and phone number
If you can’t find the policy number, calling 800-736-7311 with your name and Social Security number should be enough for the company to locate the contract.1American Amicable. Contact Us
Completing the Cancellation Form
American Amicable uses a Policy Cancellation Request form, available through customer service or the forms page on the company’s website.3American Amicable. American Amicable – Forms On the form, indicate whether you’re canceling a term policy (no cash value) or surrendering a whole life policy. If there’s cash value, say how you want to be paid: check or direct deposit.
Every policy owner on the contract must sign. If you named an irrevocable beneficiary, that person must also sign, because they hold a legal interest in the death benefit that can’t be removed without consent. Missing signatures are one of the most common reasons requests get bounced back.
Include a written instruction to stop all future premium drafts. If premiums are auto-debited, that directive gives you grounds to dispute any charges that go through after your submission date. State plainly that you intend to forfeit the death benefit in exchange for any applicable surrender value.

For fax or email, ask for written confirmation of receipt. Keep copies of everything you send.
Surrender Charges, Loans, and What You Actually Receive
If you’re surrendering a whole life policy, don’t assume the full cash value on your statement is what you’ll get. Permanent policies carry surrender charges during the early years, typically running from around 1% to 10% of cash value and decreasing over time until they disappear. On a policy only a few years old, the charge can eat most or all of the accumulated cash value.
Any outstanding policy loans are also deducted. The loan balance plus accrued interest comes off the top. What’s left after surrender charges and loan deductions is what you receive. Call American Amicable and ask for a current surrender value illustration before you commit. That figure tells you what you’d walk away with, which is the only honest way to compare a surrender against a 1035 exchange or a reduced paid-up conversion.
Don’t Just Let It Lapse
Some people stop paying premiums and let the policy lapse instead of filing paperwork. On a whole life policy, that’s almost always the worse option. When a policy lapses after the grace period (usually 30 days), coverage ends and you receive nothing: no death benefit, no cash value payout. A term policy with no cash value ends up in the same place either way, but on a whole life policy, lapsing means forfeiting cash value you could have collected through a formal surrender.
One point in favor of lapse: a lapsed policy can sometimes be reinstated within a window set by the insurer, usually by paying back premiums with interest and possibly completing a new medical exam. A surrendered policy cannot be reinstated. Once surrendered, the contract is permanently closed.
Tax Consequences of a Surrender
When you surrender a whole life policy for cash, the IRS treats any payout exceeding your cost basis as taxable ordinary income. Your cost basis is the total premiums paid, minus refunded premiums, rebates, dividends, or loan amounts you never repaid.4Internal Revenue Service. For Senior Taxpayers 1 If you paid $20,000 in premiums and surrender for $25,000, the $5,000 gain is taxable.
The insurer is required to report the distribution to the IRS on Form 1099-R, which you’ll receive in January or February of the year after the surrender.5Internal Revenue Service. About Form 1099-R, Distributions From Pensions, Annuities, Retirement or Profit-Sharing Plans, IRAs, Insurance Contracts, etc. If the tax hit would be significant, that alone is a reason to look hard at a 1035 exchange, which defers the gain entirely as long as the funds move directly to the new policy.2Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 1035 – Certain Exchanges of Insurance Policies
What Happens After You Submit
Once American Amicable has the paperwork, the company processes the cancellation and notifies your bank to stop future premium drafts. If a premium is debited while the request is in the queue, it should be refunded. Watch your bank statements for the next cycle or two to confirm drafts actually stop.
If the policy had cash value, your surrender check arrives by mail after loan balances, surrender charges, and other deductions are taken out. American Amicable also sends a final confirmation letter documenting that the policy is terminated. Keep that letter. It’s your proof the contract is closed if a question comes up later.
