To cancel an Amazon subscription, sign in to your account and go to the dashboard that holds that specific subscription: Prime has its own cancellation page, Subscribe & Save deliveries live under their own tab, Prime Video channels and Kindle Unlimited sit under Memberships & Subscriptions, and anything you signed up for through a Fire tablet is under Your Apps. Knowing how to cancel Amazon subscriptions means knowing that a single account can carry charges in four different places, and canceling one does not touch the others.
Check All Four Subscription Dashboards First
Before you cancel anything, open each hub and see what’s actually billing you. From “Account & Lists” on the website (or the profile icon in the mobile app), you can reach:
- Memberships & Subscriptions, which lists Prime, Kindle Unlimited, Amazon Music Unlimited, Prime Video add-on channels, and other digital services, along with each billing cycle, cost, and next renewal date.
- Subscribe & Save, which holds recurring deliveries of physical products with their frequency and next shipment date.
- Your Apps, which covers subscriptions started through a Fire tablet or the Amazon Appstore.
- Your Payments, where backup cards are managed (more on this below).
People routinely forget a Prime Video channel trial they started months ago or a Subscribe & Save item buried in the delivery schedule. Audit all three subscription pages before you assume you’ve found everything.
Canceling Amazon Prime
Prime has a dedicated cancellation page. Navigate through Account & Lists → Prime Membership, or search “Cancel Your Prime Membership” on Amazon, and follow the on-screen prompts.1Amazon. How to Cancel Amazon Prime Amazon will show you the benefits you’re giving up and may offer to switch you to a monthly plan or pause the membership. Click through those retention screens to finish canceling.
If you haven’t used any Prime benefits during the current billing period, Amazon will issue a full refund, processed within three to five business days.1Amazon. How to Cancel Amazon Prime If you’ve used benefits like free shipping or Prime Video, you’ll usually keep access until the end of your paid period and simply won’t be charged again.
One trap worth naming: canceling Prime does not cancel Prime Video add-on channels, Kindle Unlimited, or Amazon Music Unlimited. Those are billed separately and keep running until you cancel each one.
Canceling Subscribe & Save Deliveries
Open Your Subscribe & Save under Account & Lists. Find the product, select the image or “Edit” to open the subscription details, then select “Cancel subscription” and confirm with “Cancel my subscription.”2Amazon. Cancel Your Subscribe and Save Subscription
Timing is the thing that catches people. Each item shows a “Last day to update this order” date. Cancel before that date and the next shipment stops. If the date has already passed, the order is in the shipping process and can’t be canceled; your cancellation applies to the shipment after that one.2Amazon. Cancel Your Subscribe and Save Subscription On monthly items, that cutoff can land a week or more before the delivery date, so check it before you assume you’ve stopped the charge.
Canceling Digital Subscriptions
Prime Video channels, Kindle Unlimited, and Amazon Music Unlimited all live under Memberships & Subscriptions. The cancellation path is similar for each, with small differences.
Prime Video Add-On Channels
Open Memberships & Subscriptions, find the channel, and select “Manage Subscription.” Then select “Cancel Subscription” under the advanced controls.3Amazon. Manage Your Amazon Subscriptions You keep access until the end of the current billing period, and you can reverse the cancellation any time before that end date. Canceling does not generate a refund for prior charges.4Amazon Prime Video. Cancel Your Prime Video Add-On Subscription
If you subscribed to a Prime Video channel through Apple, which is common when you signed up inside the Apple TV app, Amazon cannot cancel it. You have to go into Apple’s subscription settings and cancel there at least 24 hours before renewal.4Amazon Prime Video. Cancel Your Prime Video Add-On Subscription
Kindle Unlimited
Open “Manage Your Kindle Unlimited Membership” (search the phrase or find it under Memberships & Subscriptions) and select “Cancel membership” under “Your Membership.”5Amazon. Cancel Your Kindle Unlimited Subscription You keep reading access through the end of the billing period, and any borrowed books are returned from your library once the membership ends.
Amazon Music Unlimited
Go to Memberships & Subscriptions, select the music subscription, choose “Manage Subscription,” and follow the cancellation prompts. If you signed up through a third-party device or app, you may need to cancel through that platform instead.
Canceling Appstore Subscriptions
Subscriptions started on a Fire tablet or through the Amazon Appstore are managed in their own place. These are often the free trials that quietly rolled into paid subscriptions.
- Open Your Account on Amazon’s website.
- Select “Your Apps” under “Digital content and devices.”
- Select “Your Subscriptions” under “Manage.”6Amazon. Manage Your Appstore Subscriptions from the Website
- Find the app and turn off auto-renewal.
Turning off auto-renewal doesn’t cut access right away. The subscription features keep working until the current period ends.6Amazon. Manage Your Appstore Subscriptions from the Website If a Fire tablet has been in a child’s hands, this is the dashboard to check.
Turn Off Backup Payment Methods
Amazon will automatically charge a backup credit or debit card on your account if your primary payment method fails. A subscription you expected to lapse with an expired card can still bill silently. Open “Your Payments” inside Your Account, toggle the backup payment feature to “disabled” or uncheck specific cards you don’t want used as backups, then select “Save.”7Amazon. Manage Your Backup Payment Methods
Amazon warns that disabling backup payments may cause delays if your primary method fails, which is the point when you’re trying to stop unwanted charges. If a backup card was already billed for an order you didn’t mean to keep, go to Customer Service, select the order, click “Change payment method,” and pick a different card. Refunds for changed payment methods take roughly seven to ten business days.7Amazon. Manage Your Backup Payment Methods
Your Legal Right to Cancel Easily
Federal law requires any company that uses negative option marketing, where your silence is treated as consent to keep billing, to provide a simple way for you to stop recurring charges on your credit card, debit card, or bank account.8Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 8403 – Negative Option Marketing on the Internet The company also has to clearly disclose the terms of the recurring charge up front and get your informed consent.9Federal Trade Commission. Enforcement Policy Statement Regarding Negative Option Marketing
The FTC has also finalized a “click-to-cancel” rule that requires sellers to make canceling as easy as signing up and to provide a mechanism that immediately halts charges.10Federal Trade Commission. Federal Trade Commission Announces Final Click-to-Cancel Rule If a cancellation process feels deliberately confusing, or you’re forced to call a phone number when you signed up online, you can file a complaint with the FTC at ftc.gov.
