How to Cancel Amazon Prime Auto Renewal and Get a Refund

To cancel Amazon Prime auto renewal, sign in to your Amazon account, open your Prime membership page, and work through the “End Membership” flow until you reach the final confirmation screen showing the date your access will end. The whole thing takes about two minutes. Your benefits stay active through the end of the period you’ve already paid for, whether that’s the $14.99 monthly cycle or the $139 annual one.

Cancel on the Amazon Website

The most direct path is Amazon’s “Cancel Your Prime Membership” page while logged in. If you’d rather navigate manually, hover over “Account & Lists” at the top of the page, choose your Prime membership, then find “Manage Membership.”

Amazon won’t let you finish in one click. Several screens will show you what you’d lose, offer a cheaper plan, or suggest a different billing cycle. Keep clicking through. The last screen states the exact date your access ends and asks you to confirm. Select the button to end the membership on that date and you’re done.

Cancel in the Mobile App

Open the Amazon app, tap the profile or menu icon (the three horizontal lines near the bottom), then tap “Prime.” Near the top, look for a dropdown arrow or a “Manage My Membership” link. That opens the same cancellation flow as the desktop site.

If you don’t see a cancellation option, you probably didn’t sign up through Amazon directly. Memberships purchased through the Apple App Store or Google Play have to be canceled through Apple’s or Google’s subscription settings. The same applies to Prime memberships bundled with a wireless carrier or another company’s service. In those cases, contact whoever bills you, not Amazon.

Cancel by Contacting Amazon

If the self-service route breaks down, Amazon’s customer service can cancel the membership for you. Go to the Customer Service page, choose “Help with something else,” then “Prime.” You’ll reach a representative by chat or phone who can process it directly. This is also the better route for unusual situations, like a deceased family member’s account or a disputed charge.

Set a Renewal Reminder Instead

Not ready to decide today? On the membership management page, check the “Remind me before renewing” box. Amazon will email you three days before your renewal date. That’s a workable middle ground while you decide whether you’ve been using Prime enough to justify the fee.

Refunds After Cancellation

Whether you get money back depends on timing and whether anyone on the account has used Prime benefits since the last charge.

  • Cancel within three business days of signing up or converting from a free trial and you get a full refund, though Amazon may deduct the value of any benefits used in those three days.
  • Cancel after three business days with no benefits used since the last charge and you still qualify for a full refund.
  • Cancel after three business days with benefits already used and there’s no refund. Your access continues to the end of the current billing period.

Memberships redeemed through gift codes or promotional codes aren’t refundable. Approved refunds are processed within three to five business days.

What Keeps Billing After You Cancel

Canceling Prime does not cancel Prime Video add-on channels like Max, Paramount+, or Starz. Those bill separately and will keep charging you. To stop them, open “Manage Your Subscriptions” in your account, find each add-on, and select “Unsubscribe.” This is the trap most people fall into: they cancel Prime, assume everything stops, and then see channel charges the next month.

Amazon Music Unlimited also changes price. Prime members pay $11.99 a month; without Prime, that rate goes up to $12.99. If part of the point of canceling was cutting costs, factor that in.

Amazon Household

If you share benefits through Amazon Household, canceling cuts off everyone else on the account. Shared Family Library content becomes inaccessible to other members. Tell them before you cancel so they can make any planned purchases or downloads first.

Backup Payment Methods

Amazon keeps backup payment methods on file and can charge a secondary card if the primary one fails. Even after canceling Prime, check “Your Payments” under “Your Account” and review the backup payment settings. You can disable the feature entirely or uncheck specific cards. Save your changes before leaving the page.

Cheaper Prime Tiers to Consider First

Before canceling outright, two lower-cost tiers might fit your situation.

Prime Access

Prime Access gives you the full Prime membership for $6.99 per month instead of $14.99. You can qualify by verifying that your household income is at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Guideline, or by uploading proof of enrollment in programs like Medicaid, SNAP, SSI, TANF, WIC, or LIHEAP.

Prime for Young Adults

Anyone between 18 and 24, or currently enrolled in college, can sign up for Prime for Young Adults (formerly Prime Student). It starts with a six-month free trial and then continues at a discounted rate. Verification is done with a .edu email or a student ID, transcript, or enrollment letter.

Confirm the Cancellation Went Through

Once you finish the flow, the membership management page updates with a message that your plan won’t renew and the exact date your access ends. Amazon also sends a confirmation email. Save it. If a charge shows up after the cancellation date, that email is your evidence when you dispute it with Amazon or your bank.

After the date your next charge would have hit, check your bank or credit card statement. If you see $14.99 or $139 that shouldn’t be there, contact Amazon customer service first, since they can usually reverse it quickly. The Restore Online Shoppers’ Confidence Act requires online sellers to provide simple ways to stop recurring charges, so the law is on your side if a company makes cancellation unreasonably difficult.
