To cancel a Western Union money order, submit a refund request either through the online Money Order Request form or by mailing a completed Customer Request form to Western Union’s money order services address in Englewood, Colorado. You’ll need the 11-digit serial number from your receipt, proof of purchase, and government-issued ID. Western Union charges a non-refundable processing fee of up to $15 depending on the money order’s face value, and the refund is only possible if the money order hasn’t already been cashed.1Western Union. First, Check Whether It’s Been Cashed
A refund is only available on an uncashed money order. Once someone deposits or cashes it, Western Union will not reverse the payment. The online refund form includes a status check as its first step, so entering the 11-digit serial number from your receipt will tell you right away whether the money order is still outstanding.1Western Union. What You Need Before You File
Whether you file online or by mail, gather the same information:
- The 11-digit serial number printed on the bottom portion of the money order or on your purchase receipt.
- Your full legal name as it appears on your government-issued photo ID.
- The payee name from the “Pay to” line.
- The purchase date and the dollar amount.
- The name and location of the store where you bought the money order.
- Proof of purchase: a scan or photo of the receipt (barcode side) or of the money order itself. If the money order was stolen, a store cash register receipt paired with a police report can substitute.
- A government-issued photo ID. You’ll need the same ID when you pick up the refund.
One point of confusion worth clearing up: a money order uses an 11-digit serial number, not a Money Transfer Control Number (MTCN). The MTCN is for wire transfers and won’t pull up a money order record.
Filing the Refund Request Online
