How to Cancel a TV Licence in the UK: Online, Phone, Refunds

To cancel a TV licence in the UK, submit a “No Licence Needed” declaration on the TV Licensing website, then cancel your Direct Debit with your bank. The whole thing takes about five minutes online. If you paid upfront and have at least one complete month left on the licence, you can claim a refund on the unused portion. With the standard colour licence set at £180 a year from April 2026, cancelling promptly is worth doing as soon as your viewing habits change.1GOV.UK. Cost of TV Licence Fee Set for 2026/27

Check First That You Genuinely Don’t Need One

Before you cancel, be sure you actually fall outside the rules. You need a licence to watch or record any programme as it airs on any channel, on any device, including live broadcasts streamed through Amazon Prime Video, YouTube, Now, Netflix, or Sky Go. If a programme is going out live and you are watching it in real time, the platform does not matter.2TV Licensing. Watching TV Live, Online and on Mobile Devices

BBC iPlayer is the trap. You need a licence to download or stream anything on iPlayer, including on-demand content that isn’t live. On every other service, on-demand viewing is licence-free. So if you still use iPlayer, even occasionally, you cannot cancel.

You are safe to cancel if you only watch on-demand content on services like Netflix, Disney+, ITVx, or YouTube clips, and you don’t use iPlayer at all.

Cancel Online in Five Minutes

The fastest route is the No Licence Needed declaration on the TV Licensing website. Have your 10-digit TV Licence number ready. You’ll find it on your licence, on any letters or emails from TV Licensing, or on your bank statement if you pay by Direct Debit.3TV Licensing. How Can I Find Out My TV Licence Number

Declaring That You Dont Need a TV Licence at Your Address You enter your licence number, name, address, and the reason you no longer need cover. Include your full name, TV Licence number, address, and a clear statement that you no longer need a licence. A written response takes several weeks, so use post only if the online form isn’t an option.

Cancel Your Direct Debit Yourself

After submitting the declaration, cancel the Direct Debit with your bank. TV Licensing advises doing this yourself rather than assuming the payments stop automatically.6TV Licensing. Claiming a Refund on Unused Months

If you paid upfront and are cancelling early, you can apply for a refund on the unused portion of your licence. You qualify as long as at least one complete month remains.7TV Licensing. TV Licence Refund and Cancellation

Apply through the refund section on the TV Licensing website or by calling 0300 790 6113. You’ll need your licence number and details of your change in circumstances, such as a forwarding address or confirmation that the property is now vacant. TV Licensing aims to process refunds within 21 days, paid by cheque or bank transfer depending on how you originally paid.

The refund is calculated by full months remaining. At £180 a year, each unused month is worth £15.1GOV.UK. Cost of TV Licence Fee Set for 2026/27 If you know your circumstances are about to change, apply promptly so processing delays don’t cost you a month.

What Happens If an Officer Visits

After you cancel, TV Licensing may send an enforcement officer to verify that your household really doesn’t watch live TV or iPlayer. These visits are routine and not an accusation.

Visiting officers have no legal power to enter your home without a search warrant granted by a magistrate, or a sheriff in Scotland. You can refuse entry, and the officer must leave if you ask. If you do let them in, the visit is brief: the officer checks the main living areas to see whether a television is in use. If you’ve legitimately stopped watching live content, nothing comes of it.

Watching live TV or iPlayer without a licence is a criminal offence carrying a fine of up to £1,000, plus court costs.8Legislation.gov.uk. Communications Act 2003 – Explanatory Notes – Section 363 So only submit the No Licence Needed declaration if it’s genuinely accurate.

Students Leaving Halls or a Rented Room

Students are one of the most common groups cancelling mid-year. If you bought a licence for student accommodation and you’re heading home for the summer to a household that already has its own licence, you’re entitled to a refund on the remaining months. A student who paid in October and moves out in May has roughly four months left, worth around £60.

When you apply, have your tenancy end date ready as evidence. Don’t just stop paying and assume the licence expires quietly. An unpaid licence generates enforcement letters, and those follow you to your next address if TV Licensing has it on file.

Moving House

Your licence doesn’t automatically transfer to a new address. If you’re moving and still plan to watch live TV, update your address with TV Licensing; you can do this up to three months before your move.9TV Licensing. What Happens When I Move Home

If you’re moving into a household that already has a licence, you no longer need your own, and you can apply for a refund on the remaining months. Sometimes the reason for cancelling is cost, not viewing habits. If that’s you, check whether a concession would bring the fee down before you give up live TV altogether.
