A “soulmates” charge on your bank statement is almost always a recurring subscription from a psychic or “soulmate sketch” app that you signed up for through a low-cost trial. The two services behind most of these charges are Hint (hint.app) and The Relationship Psychics, both of which convert a small initial payment, often around a dollar, into weekly or monthly billing that continues until you cancel.1Hint. Terms and Conditions2Better Business Bureau. The Relationship Psychics Complaints You can stop the billing and, in many cases, recover what you were charged.
What the Charge Actually Is
These services advertise on social media, promising a drawn portrait of a future romantic partner along with personality details. The hook is the price. Hint offers trial charges as low as $0.52 or $1.00, sometimes split into two micro-charges to confirm the card supports recurring billing.1Hint. Terms and Conditions The Relationship Psychics runs a similar model through its Seattle-based mobile app.2Better Business Bureau. The Relationship Psychics Complaints
That initial payment activates a seven-day trial that automatically becomes a paid subscription unless you cancel before it ends. Hint’s subscription rates run from $9.99 to $19.00 per week, or $19.99 to $69.00 per month, depending on the plan.1Hint. Terms and Conditions Add-on purchases for “fast” sketches, numerology reports, or natal chart readings run from $4.99 to $49.99. Consumers filing complaints in 2026 against Hint described being billed $29.99 or more weeks after a purchase they thought was a one-time buy, with charges hitting through Cash App, PayPal, Wise, and Revolut.3Xolvie. If the descriptor on your statement is prefixed “GOOGLE*” and then a name, the charge routed through Google Play, which points to an Android app subscription.4Google. How to Stop the Billing
Cancel Directly With the Service
For Hint, cancel through the app dashboard or at hint.app under the account and billing section. For refund requests, email help@hint.app with the subject line “Unauthorized subscription charges.” Hint’s terms allow first-time trial users to request a full refund within 30 days of the trial purchase; regular subscription payments are generally non-refundable except for billing errors or unauthorized transactions.1Hint. Consumers have reported that support responses can be slow or automated, and that some replies attempt to upsell additional services instead of processing a refund. The Relationship Psychics has 24 Better Business Bureau complaints on file over three years, four of them unanswered, with users saying the business did not honor its advertised 60- or 90-day money-back guarantee.2Better Business Bureau. The Relationship Psychics Complaints If email requests go nowhere, move to the next steps.
Cancel Through Your App Store
If you subscribed inside a mobile app, the billing relationship is often with Apple or Google rather than the app maker, and you have to cancel there.
On an iPhone or iPad, open Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions, and cancel from that screen. To request a refund from Apple, go to reportaproblem.apple.com, sign in, select the charge, and choose “Request a refund.” Apple typically responds within one to three days.6Apple. App Store Refund Canceling does not automatically refund charges that have already posted, so you need to do both.
On Android, manage the subscription through the Google Play Store app. For unauthorized charges, Google’s dispute portal at payments.google.com/payments/unauthorizedtransactions accepts reports for transactions from the previous 120 days.4Google. Find and Manage Purchases on Google Play
Dispute the Charge With Your Bank or Card Issuer
If the service ignores your refund request or you never knowingly agreed to a subscription in the first place, a credit card dispute is the most reliable route. Under the Fair Credit Billing Act, you can dispute billing errors, including unauthorized charges, by sending written notice to the address your issuer lists for billing inquiries. That notice has to reach the issuer within 60 days of the statement that shows the charge.7FTC. Using Credit Cards and Disputing Charges The issuer must acknowledge your dispute within 30 days and resolve it within 90.8Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. While the investigation is open, you can withhold payment on the disputed amount, and the issuer cannot report the account as delinquent for that amount or close it over the dispute.7FTC. Using Credit Cards and Disputing Charges Federal law caps your liability for unauthorized credit card charges at $50. If the charge came through Cash App, PayPal, or a similar platform rather than a card, the dispute runs through that platform’s own resolution process.
Watch for a Second Charge
Some users report multiple charges from the same service within a single month.3Xolvie. Hint Has Been Charging Me for Months Without Permission After canceling, check your next two statements. If a charge appears after cancellation, that is a separate unauthorized transaction and can be disputed on the same grounds.
Reporting the Practice
If you believe you were deceived into the subscription, you can file a report with the Federal Trade Commission at reportfraud.ftc.gov. The FTC uses these reports to build enforcement cases and shares them with other law enforcement agencies.9FTC. Why Report Fraud You can also file with your state attorney general. California residents have the strongest state-level backing: California’s amended Automatic Renewal Law, effective July 1, 2025, requires businesses to get affirmative consent for recurring charges, offer cancellation at least as easy as enrollment, and include a prominent “click to cancel” button for online subscriptions. Violations carry penalties of up to $2,500 each, and goods or services provided in violation can be treated as unconditional gifts requiring full refunds.10FTC. Negative Option Rule Colorado, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New York, and Utah have also enacted enhanced automatic renewal rules.
Why This Keeps Happening
Soulmate sketch services sit inside a much larger category of subscription traps that regulators call “negative option” marketing, where a business treats a consumer’s silence as consent to keep charging. A 2024 international sweep of 642 subscription websites and apps by the FTC and partner enforcement networks found that roughly 76% used at least one dark pattern, and among services with automatic renewals, 81% did not let consumers turn off auto-renewal during purchase, 70% failed to explain how to cancel during enrollment, and 67% did not disclose when a renewal charge would occur.11FTC. FTC, ICPEN, GPEN Announce Results of Review of Dark Patterns
The FTC’s 2021 enforcement policy statement told businesses they must clearly disclose material terms before charging, get express informed consent for recurring billing, and provide cancellation at least as easy as the sign-up.12FTC. FTC to Ramp Up Enforcement Against Illegal Dark Patterns The agency continues to enforce the Restore Online Shoppers’ Confidence Act and existing negative option rules against subscription traps.10FTC. Negative Option Rule If a soulmate sketch service billed you without a clear disclosure of the recurring terms, or made cancellation hard to find, that history is relevant when you dispute the charge with your bank and when you file with the FTC or your state attorney general.
