How to Cancel a Scheels Credit Card: Steps and Credit Impact

To cancel a Scheels Visa credit card, call First National Bank of Omaha (FNBO) at 888-295-5540 and tell the representative you want to close the account permanently.1Card by FNBO. The work that protects your rewards, your recurring bills, and your credit score happens before and after it.

What to Handle Before You Call

Redeem Your Rewards First

The Scheels Visa earns 3 points per dollar on Scheels purchases and 1 point everywhere else, with a $25 Scheels gift card automatically issued every 2,500 points.3Scheels. SCHEELS Visa Apply Today to Reward Your Passion Once the account closes, any unredeemed points are likely gone. Log in and cash out whatever you have. If you are close to the 2,500-point threshold, spending a little more at Scheels to trigger that last gift card is worth more than forfeiting the points.

Pay Down the Balance

Paying the card off before you close it is strongly recommended but not required. You can close an account that still carries a balance; new purchases stop, but the debt stays on the books and interest keeps accruing until you pay it off. FNBO cannot charge a closing fee or raise your fees after closure.

If you just paid the statement balance in full, check once more. Interest can build between your statement date and the date your payment posts. This trailing interest carries into the next cycle, and if it goes unpaid it can eventually show up as a late payment on your credit report. Wait for one more statement to confirm a true zero before you call.

Move Any Recurring Charges

Subscriptions and autopay arrangements tied to the Scheels Visa need to be switched to a different card or canceled before closure. The bank is not obligated to reject those charges just because the account is closed, and most card agreements put that responsibility on you.4HelpWithMyBank.gov. Remove Authorized Users

If anyone else holds a card on the account, call the same FNBO number and ask to remove them before closing. Destroy any card issued in their name, and let them know to update their own recurring charges.

Making the Call

Call FNBO at 888-295-5540 during business hours with your 16-digit card number and the last four digits of the primary account holder’s Social Security number ready. The representative will verify your identity, then process the closure once you ask for it clearly.

Expect a retention offer. The representative may float a temporary rate reduction, bonus points, or a similar incentive to keep you. If you are decided, decline politely and repeat the request. Before you hang up, ask for a confirmation or reference number and write it down. Ask the representative to send written confirmation that the account has been closed, with the final balance noted.

What to Do After You Hang Up

Follow Up in Writing

A letter creates a paper trail the phone call does not. Send a brief note with your name, account number, the date you called, your confirmation number, and a request for a final statement. Send it certified mail with return receipt requested to:

Keep the written confirmation FNBO sends alongside your own notes. If a billing error or identity question comes up years later, that letter is the fastest way to resolve it.

Destroy the Physical Card

Cut the card into several pieces, slicing through the chip and the magnetic strip. A cross-cut shredder is better. A canceled card still shows your name and account number, which is enough for someone to attempt fraud. Destroy any authorized user cards the same way.

Claim a Credit Balance If You Have One

If you overpaid, or a refund posted after you zeroed the account, you may be owed money. Federal rules require FNBO to refund any credit balance over $1 within seven business days of receiving your written request. If a credit sits on a closed account for more than six months, the bank must make a good-faith effort to return it to you.5eCFR. 12 CFR 226.11 – Treatment of Credit Balances Account Termination

How Closing the Card Affects Your Credit

Utilization Can Jump

Closing the Scheels Visa removes its credit limit from your total available credit. If you carry balances on other cards, your utilization ratio rises because you owe the same amount against a smaller pool. Scoring models weight utilization heavily, and staying under 30% is a common benchmark. Before you call, add your balances on other cards, divide by the total limits on those cards without the Scheels limit, and see where you land. If the number climbs past 30%, consider paying down other balances first.

The Account Stays on Your Report

A closed account in good standing does not disappear. It typically remains visible on your credit report for up to 10 years and continues to contribute to the length of your credit history during that window. Missed payments can stay for up to seven years from the date of the delinquency. The long-term impact of closing one card is usually modest if the rest of your profile is healthy.

Verify the Closure With the Bureaus

Pull your credit report from one of the major bureaus 30 to 60 days after closure and confirm the account shows as closed with a zero balance. If it still shows open or carries an incorrect balance, you have the right to dispute the inaccuracy with the credit reporting agency. Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, consumer reporting agencies must investigate disputes and correct or remove unverifiable information, generally within 30 days.6Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.
