To cancel a Planet Fitness membership, you have to either walk into your home club and sign a cancellation form or send a certified letter to that club. There is no online, app, phone, or email option. Get the request in by the 10th of the month to stop the next monthly draft, and by the 25th of the month before your annual fee is due to avoid that separate $49 charge.
Only Two Cancellation Methods Are Accepted
Your home club is the location where you originally signed up, and it’s the only one with authority over your account. A different Planet Fitness cannot cancel for you, even if you carry a Black Card that gives you access to every club in the country. Pick one of two channels: an in-person visit during staffed hours, or a certified letter mailed to the club.
Cancelling in Person
Walk in during staffed front-desk hours and tell whoever is at the counter you want to cancel. They’ll pull your account and hand you a cancellation form. Sign it, and ask for a copy before you leave. That copy is your proof if a charge shows up later.
Bring a photo ID and know your membership number, which sits on your key tag or inside the app. Ask the staff member to confirm your billing date and your annual fee date while you’re there. If they offer to freeze your membership instead, that’s a retention pitch. You can decline and continue with the cancellation.
Cancelling by Certified Mail
If you’ve moved away from your home club or can’t get there during business hours, mail a letter through USPS Certified Mail. The letter needs:
- Your full name exactly as it appears on the account
- Your membership ID number from your key tag, the app, or a billing statement
- Your home club’s name and address
- Your mailing address, email, and phone number
- A clear cancellation statement, such as “I am requesting cancellation of my Planet Fitness membership effective immediately”
- The date
- Your signature
Add a line asking for written confirmation that billing has stopped. Address the envelope to the club, not to Planet Fitness corporate.
At the post office, ask for Certified Mail with Return Receipt. Certified Mail is $5.30 and gives you a tracking number. A hard-copy Return Receipt adds $4.40, or the electronic version runs $2.82.1United States Postal Service. January 2026 Price Change – Notice 123 The Return Receipt captures the signature of whoever accepts the letter at the club, which is the piece you’ll want if you ever have to dispute a charge.
The Two Deadlines That Decide Your Final Charges
Planet Fitness runs two separate billing cycles, and each has its own cutoff. Confusing them is the most common way people end up paying more than they expected.
The 10th of the Month for Monthly Dues
Your cancellation must reach the club by the 10th to stop the following month’s draft. Monthly dues typically pull on the 17th, and the company says it needs up to seven business days to process billing changes.2North Jersey Media Group. Want to Cancel Your Planet Fitness Membership? Prepare for a Workout Cancel on the 11th and you’ll see one more charge. If you’re mailing, count backward from the 10th so the letter arrives in time; the postmark doesn’t count.
The 25th of the Month for the Annual Fee
The annual fee is a separate charge. To avoid it, your cancellation has to be received by the 25th of the month before it’s due.3Planet Fitness. Planet Fitness Customer Service and FAQ The annual fee typically hits about two months after you originally signed up, then recurs on that same date each year. If you don’t remember when yours lands, check your bank statements or call the club before you start the cancellation process. Getting hit with a $49 annual fee the week after you thought you’d cancelled is easy to avoid with a five-minute phone call.
What You’ll Owe on the Way Out
What you pay to leave depends on which plan you signed and how long you’ve been on it.
On a month-to-month plan with no commitment, you can cancel anytime with no buyout fee. You’ll still owe for any billing cycle already in motion, but there’s no penalty on top.
On a 12-month commitment (common with Black Card and Classic plans), cancelling before the term ends triggers an early termination fee. It’s typically $58, though some franchise locations charge up to $100 depending on the contract.
Three situations can get that fee waived if you bring documentation:
- You’ve moved more than 25 miles from any Planet Fitness location. Bring a lease, utility bill, or similar proof of your new address.
- A medical condition prevents you from using the gym. A doctor’s note may qualify you.
- You’ve received military deployment orders.
Waivers aren’t automatic. Present the paperwork at your home club or include copies with your certified letter. The staff or franchise owner makes the call, so the more specific your documentation, the better.
If you’re cancelling on behalf of a family member who has passed away, the early termination fee should be waived. Provide a copy of the death certificate in person or by mail, along with the deceased member’s full name, mailing address, date of birth, and membership number if you have it, plus your own contact information so the club can confirm the cancellation with you.
Freeze Instead of Cancel
If the situation is temporary (travel, injury, a tight month), freezing pauses your monthly dues without ending the contract. Most clubs allow freezes of one to three months, with extensions up to six months for medical or military reasons. Corporate-owned clubs often freeze for free with a qualifying reason; franchise locations typically charge $5 to $15 per month during the freeze. Black Card members sometimes get the fee waived.
One important boundary: the annual fee can still be charged during a freeze if the fee date falls inside your freeze window. Freezing does not protect you from the $49. To freeze, visit your home club and speak with a staff member or manager.
If You Just Signed Up, Check Your State’s Cooling-Off Period
Many states have consumer protection laws that let you cancel a new gym contract within a short window, typically three to five business days after signing, with a full refund and no penalty. These laws sit on top of Planet Fitness’s own policy. If you just signed up and are already having second thoughts, check your state attorney general’s website for the health club cooling-off period that applies where you live. Acting inside that window can spare you the early termination fee entirely.
The FTC Click-to-Cancel Rule
The Federal Trade Commission finalized a rule in October 2024 requiring that cancellation be as simple as sign-up. If you subscribed online, the business has to let you cancel online, without forcing you to call, visit, or work through unnecessary steps. The rule also prohibits businesses from making you sit through a retention pitch before your cancellation is processed.4Federal Trade Commission. Federal Trade Commission Announces Final Click-to-Cancel Rule Making It Easier for Consumers to End Recurring Subscriptions and Memberships
Planet Fitness lets you sign up online but, as of this writing, still requires in-person or certified-mail cancellation. That’s the kind of mismatch the rule targets. If you signed up online and hit resistance, filing a complaint at ftc.gov/complaint creates a record.
Confirm the Cancellation Went Through
Don’t assume you’re done because you handed in a form or dropped a letter at the post office. Watch for a confirmation email, which typically arrives within seven to ten business days. If nothing shows up, call the home club and ask them to verify the cancellation in their system.
Then watch your bank or credit card statements for at least two full billing cycles. You should see at most one final charge for remaining dues or the buyout fee, and then nothing. If an unexpected charge appears, contact your bank with your signed cancellation form or Return Receipt and request a chargeback. Banks take these disputes seriously when you have documentation, which is why the paper trail matters from the start.
