To cancel a GoDaddy domain, sign in to your Domain Portfolio at dcc.godaddy.com/control/portfolio, open the domain, scroll to the Advanced section, and select Delete Domain. The whole process takes about two minutes. But deletion is permanent, and knowing how to cancel a GoDaddy domain properly means deciding first whether you want to delete it at all, and second whether you’re inside the refund window.
Decide What “Cancel” Actually Means for You
Most people who want to cancel a domain really just want to stop paying for it. Deletion is the strongest option, and it isn’t always the right one.
If you want the domain to lapse at the end of the current term, turn off auto-renewal instead. Go to Renewals and Billing, select Manage Subscriptions, choose the domain, and select Turn off Auto-Renew. GoDaddy shows you the exact date the subscription ends, and until then your website and email keep working normally.
Before you delete, it’s also worth checking whether the domain has resale value. GoDaddy’s free appraisal tool at godaddy.com/domain-value-appraisal uses machine learning and real sales data to estimate a list price. If the number is meaningful, listing the domain through Afternic costs nothing upfront and puts it in front of more than 100 partner sites.
How to Delete the Domain
Once you’re sure deletion is the right call:
- Sign in to your Domain Portfolio at dcc.godaddy.com/control/portfolio.
- Click the domain name to open its Domain Settings page.
- Scroll to the Advanced section and select Delete Domain.
- Check the box next to “Yes, I consent to delete the selected domains” and select Continue.
A success message confirms the deletion.1GoDaddy. Delete My Domain
Domains covered by Full or Ultimate Domain Protection require an extra identity check during deletion. If two-step verification has been active on your account for at least 24 hours, you enter a code from SMS or an authenticator app. Otherwise, GoDaddy emails a one-time password to the address on file. You don’t need to downgrade or remove the protection plan first; the verification happens as part of the deletion.2GoDaddy. Downgrade My Domain Protection Plan
What Stops Working the Moment You Delete
Deleting a domain removes more than the web address. Your website goes offline, any email accounts using the domain stop receiving mail, SSL certificates tied to the domain break, and your DNS records are gone. Business email running through GoDaddy’s Microsoft 365 integration becomes unreachable immediately, and any Microsoft Teams or Groups tied to the domain are deleted along with their content.1GoDaddy. There is no grace period for these connected services the way there is for the domain name itself. Back everything up first: website files, email exports, and any DNS records you might need to rebuild elsewhere.
Whether You Get a Refund
GoDaddy’s refund eligibility depends entirely on how long ago the charge posted. The windows are strict, and refunds are not pro-rated once you miss them.
- New registration: 5 days (120 hours) from the date of purchase.
- One-year auto-renewal: 45 days (1,080 hours) from the renewal date.
- Multi-year auto-renewal: 5 days (120 hours) from the renewal date.
- Manual renewal: 5 days (120 hours) from the renewal date.
- Monthly or sub-annual plans: 48 hours from the transaction date.
Some country-code extensions follow different rules. Australian domains (.au, .com.au, .net.au, .org.au) get only 3 days regardless of renewal type. Italian .it domains get 14 days on renewals. The full list of exceptions is in GoDaddy’s refund policy.3GoDaddy. Refund Policy
One detail catches people out: you have to request the refund before closing your GoDaddy account. Close the account first and you forfeit refund eligibility entirely, even if you’re still inside the time window.3GoDaddy. Refund Policy
If You Change Your Mind
A deleted domain sits in a holding state for up to 30 days. During that window you can recover it from your Domain Portfolio by selecting the domain and choosing Renew Now. You get the remaining time from your original registration term back at no additional cost, and you can add years if you want. Domains that were part of a bundle get a 60-day recovery window instead.4GoDaddy. Recover My Canceled Domain
After the recovery window closes, the domain moves through GoDaddy Auctions and eventually back to the registry for fresh registration.5GoDaddy. Standard Domain Expiration Timeline Getting it back after that becomes expensive or, if someone else buys it, impossible. If you deleted a domain you actually needed, act inside the first 30 days.
