To cancel a chat AI subscription, open the billing or subscription settings on whichever platform processed your original payment — the AI provider’s website, Apple, Google Play, or PayPal. The step most people skip is identifying that platform first. Canceling your account on the provider’s site does nothing if Apple or Google is the one charging you, and the payments will keep hitting your card on schedule.
Find Out Where You’re Being Billed
Pull up your bank or credit card statement and look at the merchant name on the recurring charge. “OpenAI” or “Anthropic” means you subscribed directly through the provider. “Apple.com/Bill” means you signed up through the App Store. “Google Play” or “GOOGLE*” points to Google’s subscription manager. If you paid through PayPal, the charge routes through PayPal’s own dashboard, which is separate from everything else.
Also confirm the email address you used at sign-up. You’ll need it to log in to the right settings page, and if you’ve lost access to that email, cancellation gets harder.
Canceling on the Provider’s Website
If you subscribed directly, cancellation takes about 30 seconds. For ChatGPT:
- Log in at chatgpt.com
- Click your profile icon, then select Settings
- Select Billing
- Under Cancel plan, select Cancel
Cancel at least 24 hours before your next billing date to avoid being charged for another cycle.1OpenAI Help Center. How Do I Cancel My ChatGPT Subscription Other AI providers follow the same pattern: look for a billing or subscription tab inside account settings. Most services confirm cancellation with an on-screen status change and a follow-up email.
Locked out of the email tied to your account? OpenAI lets you contact support to cancel on your behalf. You’ll need to provide the email address on the account, the last four digits of your payment card, and the date of the most recent charge.1OpenAI Help Center. How Do I Cancel My ChatGPT Subscription
Canceling Through Apple
If Apple is billing you, ignore the AI app and go to your device settings:
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad
- Tap your name at the top
- Tap Subscriptions
- Tap the AI chat subscription
- Tap Cancel Subscription
If there’s no Cancel button and you see an expiration message in red text, the subscription is already canceled.2Apple Support. If You Want to Cancel a Subscription From Apple Apple runs its own billing cycle, so the cancellation date follows Apple’s renewal schedule rather than anything shown inside the AI provider’s app.
Canceling Through Google Play
Android users who signed up through the Play Store use a similar path:
- Open the Google Play app
- Go to Subscriptions (through your profile icon or directly in the menu)
- Select the AI chat subscription
- Tap Cancel subscription and follow the prompts
Google charges at the beginning of each billing cycle, so if you cancel mid-cycle, you keep access until the period you already paid for ends.3Google Play Help. Cancel, Pause, or Change a Subscription on Google Play The subscription won’t disappear from your list immediately. It’ll show a cancellation date instead.
Canceling Through PayPal
If you paid through PayPal, neither the AI provider’s site nor your phone’s app store can stop the charges. Cancel the recurring payment inside PayPal:
- Log in to PayPal and go to Settings
- Click Payments
- Select Automatic Payments (or Subscriptions and saved businesses)
- Find the AI chat merchant and cancel the automatic payment
On the PayPal mobile app, go to Menu, then Subscriptions, then the merchant name, and select Stop Paying with PayPal. Confirm to finish.4PayPal. What Is an Automatic Payment and How Do I Update or Cancel One Once the merchant is unlinked, PayPal will no longer authorize future charges from that provider.
Team and Business Plans
Only the workspace administrator can cancel a team or business subscription. If you’re a regular team member, you can’t cancel your own seat; your admin has to do it. For a ChatGPT Business workspace, the admin’s steps are:
- Log in and click the profile icon, then select Workspace settings
- Go to the Billing tab
- Open the Manage plan dropdown
- Select Cancel subscription
The cancellation takes effect the day after the next billing date, and the whole team keeps access until then.1OpenAI Help Center. How Do I Cancel My ChatGPT Subscription
What Happens After You Cancel
You keep premium features until the end of the billing period you already paid for. After that, your account drops to the free tier: slower responses, limited model access, no priority during peak traffic.
Chat history usually survives the downgrade. OpenAI retains conversation history indefinitely on free accounts, so past chats remain accessible after a Plus subscription ends. Other providers vary. Some keep history on the free tier, others restrict older conversations after a set window. If preserving your data matters, export your history before the paid period expires; most services offer an export option in the account or privacy settings.
Worth knowing: deleting your account is not the same as canceling, but it does cancel the subscription as a side effect. Delete your ChatGPT account and billing stops, but the deletion is permanent and can’t be undone.1OpenAI Help Center. Can You Get a Refund
Most AI chat providers treat subscription payments as non-refundable once the billing cycle starts.1OpenAI Help Center. How Do I Cancel My ChatGPT Subscription Refunds are still realistic in specific situations.
For Apple subscriptions, request a refund at reportaproblem.apple.com. Apple evaluates each request individually. Accidental purchases and subscriptions that didn’t work as described have a better chance than buyer’s remorse. Expect a response within 24 to 48 hours.5Apple Support. For Google Play subscriptions, contact the app developer if more than 48 hours have passed since the charge. If the charge was unauthorized, you have 120 days to report it through Google.6Google Play Help. Request a Refund on Google Play
Billing errors are the strongest case regardless of platform. Duplicate charges, charges after cancellation, and technical glitches that produced multiple payments are the kinds of problems providers typically fix quickly.
If Charges Continue After You Cancel
Cancel correctly and still see a charge? You have two separate lines of defense depending on how you pay.
For credit card charges, federal law gives you 60 days from the date the statement was sent to dispute a billing error in writing with your card issuer. The dispute has to include your name, account number, the amount you believe is wrong, and why you think it’s an error.7Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 US Code 1666 – Correction of Billing Errors Most issuers also let you open a dispute by phone or in-app, but following up in writing preserves your legal protections. Save your cancellation confirmation email; it’s the strongest evidence you can attach.
For charges pulled directly from a bank account or debit card, the Electronic Fund Transfer Act gives you the right to stop any preauthorized recurring payment by notifying your bank at least three business days before the next scheduled charge. You can do this orally or in writing, though the bank may require written confirmation within 14 days of a phone request.8Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1693e – Preauthorized Transfers This stops future charges but doesn’t resolve the underlying dispute with the AI provider.
Your Right to Easy Cancellation
The FTC’s updated Negative Option Rule, finalized in late 2024, requires any company that sells recurring subscriptions to make cancellation as simple as signing up. Providers must offer a straightforward mechanism that immediately stops future charges, without forcing you through phone calls, chat queues, or retention surveys.9Federal Trade Commission. Rule Concerning Recurring Subscriptions and Other Negative Option Programs If an AI chat service buries its cancel button behind multiple screens or requires you to contact a person to finish the process, that company may be violating federal rules. Report these practices to the FTC at ftc.gov/complaint.
