How to Cancel a Capital One Savor Card: Online, Phone, or Mail

To cancel a Capital One Savor card, redeem any remaining cash back, pay the balance to zero, move recurring charges to another card, and then close the account online, over the phone, or by mail. The whole request takes a few minutes once your account is prepared, but the timing around your annual fee and your credit utilization decides whether the cancellation costs you anything.

Prepare the Account First

Redeem Your Rewards

Capital One rewards don’t expire while your account is open, but any unredeemed cash back disappears the moment the account closes.1Capital One. Do Capital One Rewards Expire Savor cash back can go out as a statement credit, a mailed check, a purchase reimbursement, or through PayPal and Amazon checkout.2Capital One. Zero Out the Balance

Capital One won’t close an account that still carries a balance. Check the app for pending transactions that haven’t posted yet, pay the full amount, and give it a day or two to clear. Interest keeps accruing at the Savor’s variable APR of 18.49% to 28.49% after any intro period, so a lingering balance grows fast.3Capital One. Savor Rewards Cash Back on Dining and Grocery Stores

Move Autopay and Subscriptions

Every recurring charge on the card will fail once the account closes, which can trigger late fees and dropped services. Pull the last two or three statements, list every subscription and autopay, and switch each one to a different payment method before you cancel.

Watch the Annual Fee Window

If your Savor carries an annual fee, timing matters. Capital One generally refunds the fee if you close the account within about 30 days of it being charged.4Doctor of Credit. Annual Fee Refund Rules for Each Card Issuer Some reports suggest 40 days on certain products, but 30 is the safer assumption. Once the fee is months old, expect to keep it as a sunk cost.

Cancel Online

The website and app are the fastest route. Sign in, open the Savor card from your dashboard, click the “I want to…” button, and under “Control Your Card” choose “Close Account.”5Capital One. Include your full name, mailing address, the last four digits of the account, and a clear statement that you want the account closed. Send it certified with return receipt so you have proof of delivery. This route is slower, but the receipt is solid documentation if anything is disputed later.

After the Account Closes

Get Confirmation

Watch for a confirmation email within a few days. If nothing arrives, call and verify the account is actually closed.

Expect a Final Statement or Two

Even after closure, you may still receive one or two billing statements if trailing interest or a residual charge posts. Federal rules require creditors to keep sending periodic statements for any billing cycle that ends with a balance above $1 or a finance charge.7eCFR. 12 CFR Part 1026 Subpart B Open-End Credit Pay them right away so interest doesn’t snowball on a card you thought was done.

Destroy the Card

The Savor has a metal core, so regular scissors won’t cut it. Use heavy-duty shears or a metal-cutting tool, or ask Capital One for a prepaid envelope to send it back.

Check Your Credit Report

Pull your credit report 30 to 60 days after closure and confirm the account shows as “closed at consumer’s request” rather than “closed by creditor.” Closed accounts in good standing stay on your report and keep contributing to your credit history.

How Cancelling Affects Your Credit Score

Closing a card can push your score down two ways.

Utilization Rises

Your credit utilization ratio measures how much of your available credit you’re using. Closing the Savor removes its limit from the total, which raises the ratio if you carry balances elsewhere. Below 30% is a common guideline, and lower is better.8TransUnion. How Closing Accounts Can Affect Credit Scores A sharp jump in utilization can meaningfully hurt your score.9myFICO. Does Closing a Credit Card Boost Your FICO Score

Average Account Age Eventually Shrinks

FICO scores factor in the average age of your accounts. Closing the Savor doesn’t erase it from your report immediately, but once it eventually drops off, the average changes. If the Savor is your oldest card, the effect is larger; if you have older accounts, it’s small. FICO says it never recommends closing a card just to boost a score, since the result is usually neutral or negative.9myFICO. Does Closing a Credit Card Boost Your FICO Score

When It Still Makes Sense to Close

If the annual fee outweighs your rewards, if the card pulls you into overspending, or if you’re simplifying your finances, closing is reasonable despite the score tradeoff. Just don’t cancel right before applying for a mortgage or auto loan, when even a small dip translates into a higher rate.

Consider a Product Change Instead

If the annual fee is your main issue, you don’t have to close the account. Capital One allows product changes, which swap your Savor for a different Capital One card without opening a new one. A product change usually avoids a hard inquiry and preserves your account history, credit limit, and average account age.10Capital One. Credit Card Product Change What Is It and Is It Worth It

To request one, sign in and look for targeted offers, use secure chat, or call the number on the back of the card and ask what you’re eligible for. Capital One generally requires the account to be open at least six to twelve months and in good standing. One catch: if you downgrade rather than close, Capital One typically won’t refund a recently posted annual fee, so weigh that before choosing this route.

If You Have Authorized Users

Closing the account cuts off any authorized user’s access and removes the account from their credit report. For someone who has been building credit through your card, that can shrink their credit history, reduce their total available credit, and lower their score. Warn them before you cancel so they can open their own card or make other arrangements. An authorized user with their own established credit history will feel a smaller impact than someone who leaned heavily on your account.
