To cancel a Belk credit card, call Synchrony Bank, the card’s issuer, at 1-800-669-6550 and ask a representative to close the account. There is no way to close it through the online portal or the mobile app. Before you call, redeem any rewards, pay off the balance, and move any recurring charges to a different card. A few minutes of prep prevents forfeited rewards, failed subscriptions, and surprises on your credit report.
Redeem Your Rewards Before You Close
Any points and Belk Reward Dollars in your account vanish the moment the account closes. The Belk Rewards+ program terms state that points are forfeited upon account closure and any Reward Dollars or benefits become void at cancellation.1Belk. Check your rewards balance at belk.com or on your latest statement. Belk Reward Dollars have to be used by the expiration date printed on them and can only be redeemed at a Belk store or on belk.com toward purchases made on your Belk card.2Belk. What to Have Ready Before You Call
Have your full card number and the last four digits of your Social Security number in front of you. The representative uses these to verify your identity before making any changes to the account. Your card number is on the physical card or in your online account dashboard.
Pay off any remaining balance. Synchrony won’t close an account that still carries a debt. Check the current payoff amount on your latest statement or online, and remember it may include interest accrued since the statement date. If a recent payment hasn’t posted yet, wait a few days rather than calling too early.
Look through recent statements for recurring charges. Streaming services, gym memberships, insurance premiums, and other subscriptions tied to the card will fail once the account closes, which can trigger late fees or service interruptions with those merchants. Update your payment method with each one before you cancel. Closing the card does not cancel the underlying subscription; you still owe the merchant for what you signed up for.
Making the Call to Synchrony Bank
Call the Synchrony Bank customer service line for Belk cardholders at 1-800-669-6550. The line is open Monday through Saturday, 8:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Eastern time.3Belk. Contact Us Synchrony’s general credit card line at 1-877-295-2080 also works.4Synchrony. FAQs on Synchrony Credit Cards, Apps, and More
Tell the representative you want to close the account permanently. You may be offered a retention incentive, such as a temporary interest rate reduction or bonus rewards. If you’ve made up your mind, decline and ask them to proceed. Request that the notes reflect the account was closed at your request rather than by the bank, and ask for a confirmation number before you hang up. Write it down.
Synchrony’s own FAQ confirms that phone is the required route: credit accounts can’t be closed through the online portal or mobile app.4Synchrony. FAQs on Synchrony Credit Cards, Apps, and More
Canceling by Mail Instead
If you want a paper trail, send a written cancellation request to Synchrony Bank. Keep the letter short: your full name, billing address, card account number, and a clear statement that you’re requesting permanent closure of the account.
Synchrony uses different mailing addresses for different card programs, so call 1-800-669-6550 first and ask for the correct correspondence address for your Belk account. Send the letter by certified mail with return receipt so you have proof of delivery.
A phone call is faster and gives you immediate confirmation, so most people use a letter as backup rather than the primary method. You can also do both: close the account by phone, then mail a follow-up confirmation letter for your records.
How Closing the Card Affects Your Credit
Closing a credit card can lower your credit score, at least for a while. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau explains that your credit utilization ratio, the share of your total available credit you’re using, goes up when you eliminate a credit line.5Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Does It Hurt My Credit to Close a Credit Card? Lenders view higher utilization as higher risk.
The age of your credit history matters too. If the Belk card is one of your oldest accounts, closing it can shorten the average age of your credit file and pull your score down a bit further. The CFPB notes the impact varies with the rest of your profile and may be temporary.5Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Does It Hurt My Credit to Close a Credit Card?
If you’re about to apply for a mortgage, auto loan, or other major financing, consider waiting until after that application clears before you close the card. A few points on your score can change the interest rate you’re offered. If the card is costing you money or tempting overspending, the temporary dip is usually worth it.
After the Account Is Closed
Ask Synchrony to send written confirmation that the account is closed. Keep the letter with your final statement, which should show a zero balance and closed status. Hold onto both for at least a year in case anything is disputed later.
Pull your credit reports 30 to 60 days after closure to confirm the account shows as closed. Free reports from Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion are available at AnnualCreditReport.com. If the report shows the account was “closed at credit grantor’s request” rather than closed by you, that distinction no longer affects credit scores the way it once did.6Experian. What Does Account Closed at Credit Grantors Request Mean on Credit Report If the status is still inaccurate, file a dispute with each bureau; they have 30 days to investigate and respond.
Once you’ve confirmed the account is closed, shred the physical card. The magnetic stripe and chip still hold account data worth destroying.
Can You Reopen a Closed Belk Card?
Synchrony handles reopening requests case by case and publishes no policy guaranteeing it. If you change your mind, call customer service quickly; the longer you wait, the less likely a reopening becomes. If the bank closed the account for inactivity or its own risk reasons, the odds drop further. In most cases you’ll need to apply for a new card from scratch, which means a hard inquiry on your credit report and no guarantee of the same limit.
